I fed my fish a nice portion of bloodworms this morning and throughout the whole day, my female cacatuoides is guarding them as they were her fry. She just ‘lies‘ above them without eating anything and chases all the other fish except the male away. She’s turned yellow as she would when breeding but is now mostly away from her cave/territory. Prelude to breeding or just weird behaviour?

I had one that tried to herd Daphnia as if they were her babies. Changed to the 'come here kids' colour pattern and tried to round them up. Totally unsuccessfully, of course.
I stopped feeding them live daphnia after that because it seemed to distress her. She didn't try it with bloodworms or tubifex though.

Fish act strangely in captivity sometimes, I'd avoid the bloodworm
