Shop name:

The Goldfish Bowl

Location:

118-122 Magdalen Road
Oxford
OX4 1RQ

Directions:

What they offer or specialise in: They had loads of redmoor wood in when I last went in on the 2nd Nov 07. From £15, decent pieces £10 upwards.

Over all verdict of the shop: Excellent shop, loads of fish in particular. Does tend to be a bit pricey but if you want something special they it often it the only place for miles they'll have it. Plant selection is crappy but I am told they are getting their act together re CO2, time will tell. really posted to inform about the wood :)

Can I just echo Sam's comments on the Goldfish bowl.
I was passing through Oxford when I remembered seeing this so thought I'd pay a visit.

Wow - loads of livestock choices. Good snail selection too (including large numbers of Nerites)
Loads of plants in good condition, although whilst they were expensive they are more mature fish.
The shop owner was very chatty (first one since TGM tbh) and we were talking about planted tanks for a while. Showed me the difference between Dennerle T5 tubes and Arcadia.
They have loads of different types of display tanks and in some cases the aisles (spel) are not wide enough for you to fit through! There's also a large selection of nanno tanks.
I think from my overall experience, I'd consider travelling to Oxford (about 1 hour) rather than going to AquaJardin which is kinda 10 mins away.

Worth a visit and you won't be disappointed.

On the recommendation in this thread I visited The Goldfish Bowl on Saturday as I was in the area... Huge livestock selection and a fairly big plant selection in a tank with metal halide lighting and CO2 injection... There was a bit of hair algae in the tank but nothing too much... And some of the plants were massive specimens... Definitely worth a visit if you're ever in the area...

The Goldfish Bowl started off really well with their new larger plant display, but it went downhill pretty quickly. Such a shame - most plants are being smothered by algae or are melting. What I could do with half a day to sort that out...!
Not really for the aquascaper. I wish they'd turn that room to the side of the shop that currently houses all the multicoloured gravels and plastic bridges into a high-tech planted tank section - would be amazing.
They're a little bit behind the times on that.
That said, great staff and can order stuff in for you. Great range of fish, particularly solid on marines though..

The main guy there is called Barry, not sure if Max still has an active role.

Has anyone used the Goldfish Bowl of late? Not having a pop at them, just never been in there (not for over 20 years) and wondered what it like now.
While on the subject of the GB, anyone know why they are never listed in PFK mag? Max Gibbs of the GB used supply most of PFK's photographs, not a sign of any credits to him now.

Ok so the wife wanted to go into Oxford this afternoon and it would have been rude not to pop into the GB.
First impression (and overall) 10/10, not a dead fish anywhere. Nothing annoys me more than dead fish on display and staff standing around doing nothing.
Choice and condition of tropical fish was excellent, some really good looking plants, dazzeling selection of all things marine, and a good cold water section. Also available were various turtles and a few crustacians.
The hardware selection was excellent with everything you could want plus a couple you probably hadn't thought of.
Had a chat with Barry who was very welcoming and friendly.
All in all a shop well worth a visit. Only slight downside (which is nothing to do with the shop) is finding somewhere to park, but it is worth perservering when you get inside the shop.

Hi all,
I was in Wimborne today, and I saw there was an <"aquatic shop in the middle of town">. I just popped in, without any real expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a couple of high quality scaped tanks, well looked after fish and shrimps and a range of hardscaping materials.

I had a quick chat with @Duncan Jones the owner, thoroughly nice man and very into his aquascaping. I asked if I could re-recommend him to UKAPS. He said I could, so here it is.
