I have used it (a large bag purchased from local Maidenhead Aquatics). It's pretty nice, more of a grey than black, sort of salt and peppery appearance. The grain size is quite fine (~0.5mm), so compaction might become an issue, I'm not sure much water transferral is getting through to the soil...

Hello. I run a RIO 180 with T5 lighting and am growing Lileaopsis NZ. I am low tech (no co2), I cover one bulb entirely with an upturned reflector so effectively only use one bulb, 5.5 hour photo-period. You can rule out 'lack of light' as a factor! I have good flow which I think really helps...

One year update. The tank has a shoal of 11 celestial pearl danio and now also 2 sunset honey gourami. The Amazon swords died, the new leaves were pale and translucent so I suspect that there wasn't enough co2 considering the light levels. The dwarf sag is basically in stasis, perhaps my water...

The Rio 180 with T5 lighting is a bloody nightmare, far too much light. I have the same tank and an upturned reflector blocking the light from one of the bulbs is the main thing that helped to get the tank into balance.

I have the same problem and use a Juwel reflector, positioned underneath the bulb to shade the tank. There is also a way of rewiring the ballast bar so that it only operates with one bulb, but this involves cutting into the bar and a bit of DIY knowledge. *edit* Just seen Fern answered...

Ah ha a vital clue! I hadn't thought about it this way in that the tank water must be acidic (at times) in order to dissolve existing shell that has built up. I wonder what is causing that temporary drop, possibly the leaf litter I threw in recently. I was hoping you would jump into this...
