Back to freshwater after 20 years - help! :)

Eco Complete is volcanic basalt and as such will not break down, but Not a problem at all, I'm using Colombo Flora Base which is three years old and I would guesstimate is now 50% powder, but that's now an ecosystem unto itself. Just go with what you want mate, whatever pleases your eye and...

Thanks for the welcome, I have been doing lots of reading. Thanks. From what i've read, EcoComplete is still a clay-based product - any reason this won't break down like the rest? Also do you know if it breaking down is actually an issue anyway?.. I'm not too worried about aesthetics. The...

Ecocomplete does contain some micro nutrients, not much to my knowledge. Root tablets

I have a few cherry and amano shirimps in the tank. As I understand it osmocote derives its nitrogen content from amonium nitrate. Is the amonia cause for concern or are the levels low enough to not be an issue or will the EcoComplete safely lock up any nasties?

    Root tablets

Yes, this is true. EcoComplete is essentially an inert sediment, but it is a clay substrate with a high CEC so it has the ability to transfer nutrients to the plant roots. In any case, regular addition of nutrients to the water column is a simple solution. The EC will do the rest as far as the...

    750L 30" deep Discus tank

We added the Pond soil to the planted sections and topped off with the Ecocomplete before covering the lot with fine white gravel . I'll put the wood in when we plant the tank as it is sinking nicely at the moment, I don't want to let it to start drying out. So for now that's the really...

If you are out of town a lot then you ideally want to have a nutrient rich substrate such as AS Amazonia or the Oliver Knott...

...free because my next scape wont have many rooted plants so i don't want the current dirt to fester and pollute the water, the problem is that there is a lot of powder and fine stones in EcoComplete that are beneficial so i can't even siv it clean as i will lose a lot of the beneficial substrate.
