    Critique my hardscape First hardscape

I like it. It's symmetrical but so what. :) You could add taller plants in one corner to overcome this.

Newbie - Needs help with Setup

It's fine to keep the tank in sun. You could also use mild bleach to clean the tank and then wash it with water adding dechlorinator. This will remove any traces of chlorine in the bleach. From the link you have provided for the light, it looks small relative to the length of your tank. I would...

    Cypt help

Most plants that have reddish leaves need more light. And if they don't get enough light the leaves will become green. Hope this helps you choose the right plant.

Return to aquatics after a number of years

This may not answer your question..... crypts thrive in my low light tank with little or no ferts. I inserted iron tabs in the substrate to get them started a few years ago and the rest they get from the fish waste. They grow so much that I have to remove plants every couple of months.

    Bad experience with new fish

I have a well planted tank that has been going strong for well over 7 years which had more plants than fish. So I recently purchased 8 rummy nosed tetras from Maidenhead aquatics in Ascot. A week later I find that all the tetras have contracted white spot. I moved them all to a hospital tank but...

    Is algae always bad?

As long as there is a balance between plant growth and algal growth, I dont see anything against it. Too much of certain species of algae (eg.BGA) can deprive the fish of Oxygen. And as pointed out by several others, it forms an important part of the diet of several species.

    algae on vallis

Staghorn is quite stubborn, so the only way is to keep scrubbing it off with your fingers every few days. Adding Excel and other nutrients to help the plants grow will help bring the algae in check.

    Lighting In the planted Aquarium

Hi Aaron I have added a few more terms and explanations below that you may like to incorporate into your article. Some of this may have repeats of what you have covered above Glossary Lumens - Luminous power, measured in Lumens (lm), is the amount of ‘visible light’ (for the human eye) that is...

    DIY LED lighting help !

korakot, Looks good. Whats the advantage of having the acrylic between the LED and the tank? Is it just to protect LEDs from water splash etc.? The hanging kit could be bolted to just the top acrylic plate I suppose, thus having no light loss as a result of 2nd acrylic plate?

Algae affecting bottom plants... any ideas?

I dont believe there is conclusive proof that a broken photoperiod does or does not benefit algal growth. It seems to work for me and I continue to maintain a short break in my tank. In this case, since the plants have stopped putting out O2 bubbles, it suggests that the CO2 output may be...

Still in deep trouble with a type of algae

Take the piece of wood and soak it in dilute bleach (Miltons fluid used for sterilising baby bottles etc.) for a few minutes and then wash thoroughly in dechlorinated water before reintroducing into the tank. Also clean out the filter (not with bleach) to get rid of any spores that maybe there.

Algae affecting bottom plants... any ideas?

I would also try and introduce a short break of 30-45mins between the 8hrs photoperiod as that should discourage the algae. Also is there a way you can increase the flow towards the bottom of the tank? The layout looks good BTW.

    Using rocks from outside

You should be perfectly fine using just any old rock. Give them a thorough clean and you can try the good old vinegar method on a small piece of sample from the rock to check if it will contribute to the water hardness. One other thing I would look out for is that the rock does not have any...
