Added some cherry shrimp. About 30... They lasted about 1 minute and then got eaten.
Well annoyed - i didn't think any of the species i have would be a problem with shrimp.
I hope a few managed to survive & hide but i doubt it!
Yeah those are the ones Gill.
Really impressed with the rocks - can't believe how real they look!
The plants are good too but would be even better if they made ones that are replica's of real plant species.
Time will tell i guess. Not to big a deal washing them once a month though I guess. I'd say I probably will have to do that to be honest - rather that though!
Ok so finally picked up my gravel today & have completed the scape, what do you think:
Can't wait to add a lot of colourful fish.
Hopefully it will be nice & easy to maintain too!
This actually looks decent:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aquarium-Tank ... 548wt_1397
I am not sure how bright it would be though? Reckon 1 of those would be enough to illuminate a 32inch tank - 45 cm deep.
It doesn't need to grow plants though so not worried about wattage etc.
Tanks all clean & ready now...
Only problem is the algae on the silicone which just won't come off.
Shame really as it's a nice tank apart from that :(
Yeah Just noticed those brackets - they are ugly!
I think I could try just balancing the lights on the tank edges. my tank is 82cm and the closest size is 85cm so it should work.
I'm sure I could fashion a bracket somehow just to make it secure.
Yeah those arcadia look good. Would I need 1 or 2 strips?
I found a site selling those true lumen ones but unfortunately they don't do a 32inch size (24 then jumps up to 36 inches).
Do you know how you mount those arcadia ones? I would like them to mount just onto the open top tank ideally.
Hi all,
I am not growing plants in my next tank - but I need a decent light for viewing.
Ideally I want something as small & minimalist as possible - so I was thinking an LED strip?
Needs to be about 82cm long.
Does anyone know if those "True Lumen pro" things are for sale as they look...
Hi all,
As the title suggests I have extremely stubborn green algae on my aquarium silicone.
It simply won't come off.
I have tried everything:
Scrubbing with a pad
Toothbrush
Metal toothbrush (was careful)
Emptied the tank & soaked in bleach
Vinegar
Nothing has worked... I think I need a...
Emptied tank to clean it all today. Still couldn't manage to scrub off the green algae from the silicone.
I have filled the tank up with warm water & bleach and am going to leave it to soak for a day or two.
Is it safe to do this? The bleach won't corrode the silicone or anything?
Mmm well i'll see how it goes with no lights (just for viewing). I can't see how algae would thrive as there simply won't be enough light/nutrients for it to grow (only fish waste). The tank is heavily over filtered too.
I have 4 otto's and some cherry shrimp though too - they don't make much...
Thanks :)
I have changed it slightly & will experiment more before cleaning out the tank and doing the scape properly.
Only thing I'll miss is watching the growth of the plants - but I suppose this is the trade off of having very little maintenance.
Haha don't worry this is all just experimentation.
I am draining the tank first & bleaching to remove stubborn algae.
Then glassware will replace the spray bars also.
Really impressed with the plastic plants though.
Plants (lol) arrived today so I had a play with the layout, I'm thinking something like this?
With the white sand sloping towards the rear obviously.
Looks good I think! Impressed with the plants - and like the red one in the middle.
Anyone have any scape advice?
Don't suppose you have some photos of the maui sand IN a tank? Can't seem to find any...
Edit - just found some. I really like it. Currently torn between that and a sand... Unsure. Where is the best place to buy the unipac sand?
Is the maui sand very fine? I don't want it too thick.
I was thinking about something like play sand? I will also add gradianted pebbles to make it more natural around the rocks
Love this scape george did using plastic plants:
http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/m ... p?sid=3753
I hope i can get something close.. But now am starting to worry that the resin rocks won't look as good with plants added :/
Haha yes it is a bit blasphemus isn't it!
I just honestly don't have the time/interest to keep a planted tank looking healthy anymore. So i thought I'd give a scape a go where i have no plants. To be honest if these plants arrive & look crap then I may even just attempt some sort of rock only...
Thanks mate - I'll check out the Samoa.
Yeah I know what you mean about those plants. I hope they don't look plasticky too - they weren't cheap!
They are the same ones used in this PFK article:
http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/c ... p?sid=4189
So I hope they are of similar quality.
PS...
Right so I emptied the old layout today and was left with this:
I won't be adding the gravel/sand/plants until the weekend so I had a play with the Okiishi rock I ordered & thought about this:
I don't think theres enough rock there so I have ordered another piece of the one on the right -...
Hi all,
After a lot of thought I have decided to tear down my current scape & redesign my tank.
The reasons are:
1. the scape is circa 18 months old & is in need of a big clean
2. maintenance is just not possible any more due to time constraints
I have decided to go down the route of fake...
Thanks :)
It's made a big difference since i stopped messing with CO2 & fert doses etc. keeping everything at a stable/constant level.
Still wanting the HC to grow more - sp theres hopefully no substrate visible.
Hi guys,
Not so much of a problem more a general query here. Basically I was having issues for ages with my tank & wasn't getting the growth I wanted etc.
Finally I realised that I was messing with my co2 too much and too frequently - so my tank was unstable.
So I have left my CO2 stable at...
Hi,
I normally never have a problem cleaning my glass (tank) clean however recently i have a stubborn browny dust algae on the sides that wont scrub off for some reason.
It's not diatoms as it wont scrub off. Looking on the aide its almost seethrough but if i put some fiter wool against it its...
CO2 changes - adjustment & recovery
Thanks ceg! Great read there.
So I think by overdosing the Excel I've been shooting myself in the foot! Oh well at least I've kept my gas stable.
Still awaiting for my HC to recover from the blackout I did. Looking greener and melting seems to of stopped...
CO2 changes - adjustment & recovery
Still unsure here - does overdosing liquid carbon count as co2 instability & cause the plants to be damaged by the enzyme thing?
There should be like an engraving on the cylinder itself.
This will be when it was made (i believe) and as long as its within 10 years they will refill it.
Just do a search for some fire saftey businesses round your area - they should refill them if they are in date. £20 seems a bit expensive for a refill though...
Hi all,
I’ve read some good articles recently regarding CO2 changes & enzyme production – noting that when changes are made it takes time for plants to adapt properly. I didn’t realise this previously & was constantly adjusting my CO2 (putting it up due to frustration with lack of growth – then...
Hi,
I've set up a small 10 litre tank to keep some baby shrimp in until they reach maturity & then I'll release them into my main tank...
I had no filter though so I used a small powerhead (100ltr/hr) and attached some foam pieces around the inlet... Will this function well enough as a filter...
As the title suggests...
How importent is this in a hi tech tank?
Ie...
Co2
Lighting
Water changes
Dosing.
I am beginning to think a lot of my past failings are due to messing round with co2 too often, irregular dosing/changes & also fiddling with light...
Hi all,
I've had enough with all the hassle & maintenance required for planted tanks & i am thinking of converting mine into a completely non-planted tank.
I'm just looking for a bit of inspiration, perhaps from some of the good scapers on here for a tank which has no plants.
I like the...
It's just moving constantly up & down...
I inject co2 straight into the filter & can't find any leaks.
Can injecting into the canister be unstable due to co2 bubbles building up inside?
Hi all,
When my reg is hooked up & running the preasure gauge on it is not still. It moves very slightly up & down. Between 1.6 - 1.8 bar.
I use a wave co2 reg. is this normal?
I am beginning to think my co2 supply is not stable & could be fluctuating - is this an indication of this?
Thanks
Probably a silly question & has probably been covered before... But...
Does having more CO2 mean you need more nutrients?
Or is it only light that drives the nutrient demand up?
Or does having a tank with a yellow DC need more nutrients than one with a Green DC?
Just wanted to double check
Hows this for an all in one mix!
10 teaspoons kno3
4 teaspoons kh2po4
9 teaspoons mgso4
5 teaspoons of trace
Asorbic acid & potassium sorbate added
All mixed in 1000ml of water.
Dosing 50ml daily into my 130 litre tank!
This strong enough?!
Well i've noticed wierd behaviour of my shrimp - floating about and upside down sometimes... I really think its co2.
Can't see what else would be in my water column that could cause this.
As the title suggests...
My staurogen seems to of simply stopped growing. Ita very wierd as my tank is hi tech with excellent co2 & flow & i am dosing via EI.
My other plants are also growing too.
The only thing i can think is a lack of nutrients - but surely that would effect the other plants...
Ok so i know its not CO2 ... Really dont know where they are. Yesterday i put 30 in and observed them all for a few hours. Now today i can see maybe 3? But no dead bodies.
The only fish i have in there are cardinal tetras & a guppy & 4 ottos.
No different places - they are all healthy shrimp. Don't know if that image is showing but my DC is bordering on yellow.
I only have 1 bps as well.
Have turned it down this morning to around 0.7bps
Hi all,
I have a strange problem. In my tank whenever I try and introduce cherry shrimp they all seem to dissapear/die..
Ive never had this problem before and i am at a loss as to what it could be. My tank is fully mature & specs are as follows:
130litre
1500ltrhr filter
T8 x2 6 hours a day...
