how to set up the camera for testing aquarium lights

Close the lights in the room leave only the sun as a light source, set the camera to daylight and take the photos. If you correct the wb with the gray card they all will look more or less the same and you don't want that.

    another what camera thread...

Iain I'd wait for 70D that comes with a neat LCD autofocusing system that beats the crap out of the old point-wait-20s-to-focus-then-shoot system. Cheers, Mike

Yes I DO Tom, gives the "scary" spiders a new dimension. Hope Santa's generous this year. :D

    Opinions on "close up filters"

It's down to what magnification you want to achieve and the focusing distance, not every critter is comfortable with a lens on their head. (more info here: Macro Extension Tubes & Close-up Lenses) :) Anyway just bought a 430ex II and played with it last weekend with a classic diffuser attached...

    Opinions on "close up filters"

Raynox DCR-150/DCR-250 is the best bet for quality although I haven't tried them I dug some nice photos done with them. Tried other brands but the results were from poor to horrible (the cheap ebay version). I own a macro lense now and I want to extend the 1:1 with a Raynox. Maybe next month. If...

    Canon 6D

I'm waiting for Canon 7D Mark II (some specs here), I'm still into DX for the crop factor and I want the 61 AF Points and the "lots of video features". :) Enjoy your 6D mate and share some lovely photos when you get it.

Can I use a old AIS lens with a Nikon D7000

Wait for xmass when the D5200 price drops, I think it's a better choice than the D7000, most of the features are there + some goodies and 1080p 60p that's nice for a bit of slow mo especially when filming tanks.

    canon 350d best lens ?

Re: canon 350d top bid ? I'd save for a newer camera, ditched my 450 after a year, working with iso above 100 was terrible.

    Ultra-wide angle (UWA) and aquascaping

I think in this kind of layouts you can use UWA to further improve the depth of the aquascape just because it brings sides closer and pushes the center further away.

And hopefully a better range of lenses, that kept me from saving for the a77 :) 5Dii vs 5Diii review: 5D mark III | c300 I would've liked only four things with the new 5D: - autofocus - full manual focus assist (it comes with Magic Lantern though ...) - true 1080p 60fps - swivel screen...

    Canon 5D Mark III

I think this one says it all: http://www.eoshd.com/content/7551/canon ... iii-review so I'll stick with my current gear to learn and upgrade to Sony FF/Zeiss when I'll have the money or hope that Magic Lantern guys improve the things for Canon.

    Ultra-wide angle (UWA) and aquascaping

I'm not a professional photographer just got into photography an year ago when I bought my first DSLR. :) I like to take it slow and learn from here and there, take courses, go to workshops, spend at least 2-3 hours documenting / day, then when I hit a limitation I upgrade my gear. I really...

    Ultra-wide angle (UWA) and aquascaping

Basically you need correction for distortion, chromatic aberration and vignetting, easy done in Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw (Lens Corrections -> Profile).

    Ultra-wide angle (UWA) and aquascaping

It's not all about the gear it's about understanding photography in particular light distribution. You can have the best gear and still get crappy photos. You can find Neewer strobes really cheap on ebay to practice studio photography. A test shot, limited a bit by the shutter speed (1/160...

    D700 or D800 ??

Sorry, D7000 or 5D2 (better the D7000 as you already have Nikon lenses and it's ~ 2/3 the 5D price) but I'm not trying to convince you mate, you know better what you want. :)
  27. clonitza

    D700 or D800 ??

Well, don't forget you need a fair deal of accessories to make quality video, I hardly think there's a real big difference between d7000 and d800 when filming, of course the detail should be better but how much is it worth when speaking of full hd. If your budget is a little bit tight I'll...

    Fishy Focus

Try and focus on the eyes, use only the center focus point when you shot and recompose the scene when you crop the photo. You kinda need more than f5.6, f8 maybe but I don't think you can achieve that without more light. A flash unit above the aquarium would be great.

    D700 or D800 ??

It's 4fps fx or 6fps dx / grip. If you ask me it's not worth the transitioning only for video, I'd buy/rent/borrow a DX play with it and only if you really like making movies go for it (sadly the 800 doesn't have 60fps so now slow motion) anyway I'm not sure there's a big difference in movie...

    What macro lense?

Got an used 60mm f/2.8 macro today, rather happy with it, hardly waiting for the warm spring days, considered the 100mm but I'm not really into bulky ones. 1" Snowman erring.

Sigma 150-500mm is another good choice if you can't afford the 100-400L but it might need some focus calibration with your camera.

    Flickr vs Photobucket

Flickr is nice for running a portfolio add free and of course for doing a bit of networking. The 200 limit is only for the stream but you can upload more and the older will be kept but not shown unless you go for the pro account which comes also with the ability to add lager format photos (a...

How do i take a good full tank shot?

I placed both on white paper with a strobe with soft box in the back as background set to minimum. The bottle had an umbrella on the left (8 o'clock) and the glass the same umbrella and a soft box on the right (5 o'clock). ISO100, 1/160 and f/11 I think. This is the strobe kit (3x250w): From...

How do i take a good full tank shot?

Actually I use the 18-55mm a lot for the wider angle despite the fact that I have sharper lens. If mixed with proper lighting than there's a really small difference between this one and an L lens when using a crop sensor. For full frame, well, you kinda need L lens, but that's another story...
