External filter

Hi,
I have a 86L aquarium on the kitchen worktop. I want to put in an external with built in heater to free up space in the tank. The only problem is that I would have have to place the external on the work top hidden under the wine rack. Would this work as the filter would be at the same level as the tank. Do you need the filter to be below the tank?

From the photo you can see the black filter in the tank taking up space.

I had the same situation and my ehiem external worked fine, just harder to start it/prime it.

I suspect that you loose a very small amount of performance, didnt cause me a problem

I think it would be fine, think most manufactures specify that the filter has to be 10cm below the top of the water level in the tank.
