I added about 2inch of compost then added some water to make it like soup then was going to cap it with sand but it was 2 wet so added some gravel then sand on top

You'll probably find that the gravel works its way up through the sand over time, but should be OK otherwise.

Apart from looking pretty terrible it MAY be ok.

What compost did you add??
Would it not be a better idea to start again? Or its just a cheap top soil and you have enough.
methodical working is key to success with planted tanks
