I used that much fert when I wasnt sponsored by them on the two previous scapes in this tank. At the end of the day if you're running a big tank then youll pay extra in ferts, light, heating, substrate, hardscape and plants for a high biomass from the off. Unless you're doing low tech in which...
Cheers Al. Mark needs credit for the video as he did it for Tropica. I just sent the raw footage through to him and he worked hi magic.
Yes on the dosing, Premium one day, special the next alternated. Seems to work really well.
Thanks everyone, you're all too kind :)
I was really pleased with the IAPLC result this year as top 100 is something Ive always aimed for and just missed out last year with 114. I wasnt entirely sure this would do that well this year as it had no sand in which is "in vogue" and was a bit...
Forgot I hadnt put up the IAPLC competition entry for this year which placed #82

Sorry, I missed this Ady. NOpe, no issue with them jumping in here. I did have issues with the purple harlequins who occasionally wanted to "do a lemming" but not the pencils.
Ive had a bit of a break from the scaping just letting my tanks meander on while I concrentrated on finishing last...
oops, forgot the lighting setup.
Heres the diy rig below
flash setup by Stu Worrall Photography, on Flickr
its angled so you dont get the horrid white line against the back wall as I didnt have any extra flashes to highlight the back. Its also angled so I could fit a hairdryer blast in...
Thanks. one will go to IAPLC and another to Tropica so whichever publishes first :)
Cheers All :)
Hey thanks Viktor. Yes the design did have the holes initially but I was confident theyd eventually get filled. I love how you can plant a small amount of HC on some wood then a few months...
its looking the shizzle Ian! Looking forward to seeing it high up in IAPLC too mate (especially as its got sand ;) )
Im hoping to try some of that big HC soon too
Cheers Ian :)
Thanks George. I dont know about IAPLC this time, there is no sand after all so wont do too well!
The pic was 160th sec @ F8, ISO 100 so no noise and shot at 16mm. Ive taken a pic on the phone of the lighting setup so will post it up. its easier to see than describe!
Ta...
lol, weeing moss!
Thanks Gary. Re the filter its very nice, bomb proof and filters as it should. The pump is super powerful when pulling through thin air where other pumps would cavitate and stop so handy for water changes where you get air in the pipe. As for the cost I wouldnt personally pay...
No I meant with a bunch of stems and cutting down them at a high angle. When they grow back the light would then be on the outer edge so they'll grow towards you. Bit like a tree on a cliff growing outwards
Lol! youre a braver man than me. That lake always looks impossibly freezing!
Cheers Ady. Im sure its probably a colonels secret receipe but james' TPN mixture will be pretty close. I think Tropica have increased the concentration in the new stuff which is better.
Thanks James, yes did have...
Ive always thought it was the way you trim the bush (ahem). ie like topiary so you'd trim it more vertically at the front (if that makes any sense?)
great photos by the way, that moss keeps getting better in each shot :)
Thanks Paulo :) Re the light unfortunately yes :( However whether it actually needs replacing is another thing. The bulb in mine ran for 2 years before exploding so I had to change it!
When I bought it it was either that or a bulky luminaire as LED's didnt exist for this size tank then. Now...

premium fert (brown) - contains iron and all other important trace elements...
specialised fert (green) - contains nitrate, ammonium, phosphate and other nutrients...
what paulo said! I got it from the same place as you as i think Graeme may have had it from tropica and I'd forgotten the theory behind it but its always worked well before when I havent been on EI.
Here's an in-situ in the lounge after the new stones have been added and a further trim.

Cheers George, veyr nice of you to say :) I think the left is looking a bit untidy at the moment. once the stems on the left bunch up with crowns it will be better but Ive got a few mixes of lileopsis, Hygrophila pinnatifida, ammania bonsai and HC at the front! probably too much in this area...
To be honest it didnt look too bad in the flesh but on 2D it looks massively overgrown.
re the ferts about 6 ml per day alternating between the green and brown. i probably should bump it up though with the increased biomass.
Previously when shooting a step by step ive taped the lens so it...
more pics, more pics! :)
looks great with the new lily. Ive always liked mixing hairgrass in with HC but with talk about contrasts above you can lose it as its quite the same colour. I like the idea of some crypts in there as well as the anubias.
Ive got a bit of everything in the front of...
thats looking the biz now george. will be even more once the ricacardia grows in.
Are yo thinking of putting any stems back in at the back or leaving as is?
A little bit of extreme trimming.
I let everything go for a few weeks, stems included then had a big chop back.

I'd like your thoughts on bga.
I saw someone mention a while back that you can sprinkle one if the ei ferts onto it to get rid but I can't find the post
I've got an annoying bit on the exposed to air moss that I can't get rid of so its ideal for sprinkling on.
Nice one. Looks loads better. I did look at them when I broke my ada inlet but gush don't seem to do a non nano 13mm one so I had to go cal aqua. One to suggest to them George?
Cheers Tim :)
Thanks Ian, when I said it was some big rock i wasnt joking! took a while to decide on the right pieces and its nothing like the setup I did in TGM's sand pit but that will be for a future scape ;)
Cheers Martin, glad to oblige below
Yes the initial biomass really helped with any...
Cheers Iain, much appreciated mate :) I do always try to do something different in my tanks. sometimes it works others it doesnt. This one is overplanted but I like the mixture.
Cheer Dean, some to come.
Cheers both

Lol, yes I did squeeze a lot in, probably too many but I was after a wild look where I can put say ammania in several places rather than just one clump. Yes that ludwigia is superb, mine has gone a bit bigger, maybe twice the size of when it was delivered but then some have stayed small but all...
Heres the new tank setup after I set it up at Christmas. Further pics to follow on its progress.
The plants, plant substrate and ferts have kindly been sponsored by Tropica for this tank so it should be appearing on their website at some point.

Sorry ian, havent been on much lately and missed your new tank. Look stunning mate! love the depth on it and the white led kit looks great. fun time soon trimming the mosses and trying not to spread it all around the tank!
8 for me :)
re the UG tis an odd beast. some say it doesnt like ferts so does better in sand. Ive just used some 1-2 grow from the same pot in my two tanks.
90cm was a new tank with new amazonia so an ammonia spike to go through and no bacteria in the tank = dead :(
nano mini-m was an...
looks lush Mark and super healthy. Ive fond the same with moss, its always the one that goes mad when I leave a tank to itself and grows and grows! I guess thats why it does so well in nature.
Thanks Mark :) Im thinking of doing the next scape with just the stone but i wanted this fully planted with a mix of crypts, HC, mosses and stems and the wood suited these better. Its changed a bit since then and is now fully planted. Im just sorting through the images. Give me a shout about...
Lol, think you missed your journal Hydrophyte!
Here is the new design. XL Sieryu and Manzi Wood. Someone did mention its hard to combine the two so I thought I'd have a go. Its changed since then as Ive filled in some gaps.

My luck is probably now exhausted so no need to worry! looking forward to meeting you :)
Cheers James. Really chuffed with it but wondering how Ill manage to better it next year! lots of thought will be going into the next one.

Thanks Viktor, and thanks for the share on FB, it went around the world!

Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Apalala Shore - (Video Page 7)
aha! thanks for that. Viktor just posted on my Flickr so just read it too. Really pleased with that and have to aim for top 100 next year ( which will probably equate to 800 or something lol! )
Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Apalala Shore - (Video Page 7)

Finally I can officially put up my IAPLC 2012 entry for this year.

Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Dragon Stone Scape (Video Page 7)

Im hoping to use flash mark. The WB was all over the place on the last one I did. I have got some gels now but I think it will be quite hard to match the Kelvin of the NA green so will probably turn it off.
Ive only got two flashes...

thanks ady, i didn't see the snail!!
I only noticed after i edited the picture that its shows the different swimming zones of the fish really well. Rasboras at the top and the cherry barbs mooching around the bottom.

Thanks Harry. The shrimps are pretty happy in there, loads of places to hide!

Yeah, I did think of doing a custom white balance while I was filming it so Ill have to laminate some a4 so it can go in the tank to take a reading!
Cheers Tony, great advice, Ill give it a go.
Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Dragon Stone Scape (Video Page 7)
I bought some purple harlequins for the tank tonight from TGM. They're finding their feet at the moment so I took a quick shot of them late one. At the moment they only properly shoal if the filters are turned off so I'm not sure if the...
Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Dragon Stone Scape
might be a bit late now sorry but I created mine by damming in the aqua soil by putting dragon stone around the bottom. I then used the bags of pumice to lift the back of the scape then poured AS over it. If you've got a slope without rocks you can hold...

Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Dragon Stone Scape
Thanks all. done some more pics tonight and trying my hand at editing videos although not going too feel at the moment as I have a vertical flicker on the vids. Im not sure if its my shutter speed syncing with the MH light or something ??
Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Dragon Stone Scape
thanks all. I got lucky with the wood for the arch. Ive also hd no lifting as I tied them all together with bonsai wire then weighted one or two branches down with rock. I did swap out the last hardscape design which had the claw piece of wood and...
Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Dragon Stone Scape

Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Dragon Stone Scape

Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Dragon Stone Scape

anyway, some more...
Re: Stu's 90x45x45 Dragon Stone Scape

Re your scape its is looking great isnt it! I do prefer it without the stems...
This tank is now stripped down after the weekend. Took ages to take all the ferns off the lava as they'd embedded themselves in the rocks plus catching shrimp is a pain. Will try the bottle trap method next time.
Its currently empty with 30kg of dragon stone and manzi wood waiting to go in it...
stunning scape and congrats on the placement, thoroughly well deserved! Love the photgraphy too. Im going to have to get a nice coloured background to try as im always jealous of this and marks tank shots!
I didn't do so well with mine as I got lower than last years 544 although I seem the favour the 500's! :(
