What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

The brigittae/merah hybrids are documented as being sterile- but they can reproduce together. Also, merah and brigittae overlap geographically and some mimicry has been observed, also, there are possible 'undescribed' species in these collection zones. In short, its a mess.

    Missed a carbon dosing

Its laugh out loud bad. Not even the great keV spacey can redeem the utterly diobiolical script and story with his comical overacting. The chief of staff, off out in the countryside , running people over. The presidents of Russia and America choosing to meet in the centre of a war zone to...

What to you are good/bad signs when in a new LFS

I did recommend Maidenhead aquatics wimborne, but for the last year it's been one big tank of death. Multiple dead fish, often in the same tank. Filthy substrates and glass. Their r/o water was a disgrace at 130+ppm. Shocking decline.

    Question about CO2 bubbles

Co2 bubbles will diffuse in the water or reach the surface and be lost. So, you want the co2 bubbles to be suspended in the water for as long as possible or use a co2 reactor - these diffuse the co2 completely.

Black substrate, relatively fine, good with Corys..

Cory's deserve sand, a nice soft substrate for them to snuffle about on. Mine used to be on eco complete- its sharp and tough- not great for Cory's, and as its completely inert, not great for plants without extra ferts. My Cory's are now on a mixture of black sansibar sand and a unipac ...

    Acclimatising fish

Cpds vary in quality. Have a good look for deformities before buying any. A lot are tank bred now, and its easy to find lots with bent spines and dull colouration. Maidenhead in Havant had some, probably the best colours I've seen on cpds. Really dark brown with orange fins. Lovely.
  43. darren636

    Hydor ETH ?!

Great heaters. Shouldn't reduce flow, unless your filter uses larger diameter hoses.
  44. darren636

    Acclimatising fish

Well... I had to pay £30 for the 9 they had left. But in the past I've payed £1 each. It varies wildly for chilies. My local have cpds for £9.50 each!!!! But expect to pay from £2.50 to £4 for them.

    Acclimatising fish

I had to contact Maidenhead aquatics head office, they found me the last ones at the Havant shop. Haven't seen any local to me for over a year. They Spent 30 days in my quarantine, then went in with my older group at the weekend. And immediately settled in.

    Tank cycling

Or just use some substrate in a bucket to start the filter cycle? Unless of course this is also an outrage? :-/ It appears that the ADA ammonia is vastly superior to any ammonia you can possibly buy in a £2 bottle - might as well harness it. My point is, Something is often better than...
  79. darren636

    Tank cycling

Its blahblahblahblahing ridiculous. As you say. The substrate will release a lot of ammonia, probably 6 +ppm worth. This can be used to cycle the filter/ feed plants. But using 1-2 ppm bottled ammonia to do the same thing is regarded as heresy. Is it me? I fully cycled my first noob tank with 2 ppm...
  80. darren636

    Tank cycling

Get out of it . A new bucket , new filter media an air line and 1 ppm ammonia isn't going to set anything back or kill of the bacteria-. There aren't any- its all new and clean. We're not talking a planted tank, with plenty of plants to soak up fish waste. :-/ :-/ :-/
  81. darren636

That's a novel idea. And quite mad! I was pondering this issue last night. You don't see people putting delicate liquorice gourami into high tech set ups,.boraras inhabit the same environments. Just a musing. Good luck with them.
  90. darren636

What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

I went completely low tech. These guys are not suited to high tech. I'm not saying some people don't have success. Its not quantity - its a group behaviour issue. 97. darren636

    Shoalling non jumpers

Its your tank But there's got to be a more suited fish. I used to have 30 brigittae in my high tech, but they hated it. Microdevario would be better. They really don't care about anything and are much better swimmers, much stronger. But will jump when spooked.
  98. darren636

    Shoalling non jumpers

High flow is exactly what boraras don't like. They live in tea stained puddles With no flow , very dim light and zero nutrients . I can't really imagine a worse environment for any boraras.

    Shoalling non jumpers

They will jump if its dark and you turn the lights on
