Well the tanks empty. But I had a basic test kit for Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate.
To be honest, I'm just trying to do some detective work.
I was such a gut punch when everything started dying. Having to just save what I could and quit.
That ships sailed now and it's really put me off keeping fish...
Could use some help.
I lost my tank a few months back. Small tank with just some tetra's and shrimp.
1 day I notice the water is suddenly cloudy so I do a massive water change, situation didn't improve so I ended up doing more water changes over the following days. At 1 point I ended up...
I have a 55l planted tank. An AquaOne Aqua Nano 40 with all the stock equiptment.
The current stock:
10 Green Neon Tetras
3 Amano Shrimp
An army of Cherry Red Shrimp
2 Nerite snails
The tanks been setup for just 6 months, fish have been in there for 4.
My problem is that the tetras seem to...
I have a 55l tank that I'm looking to sell, since I'm upgrading.
The tanks planted, has 10 gren neon tetras, 2 nerite snails, 3 amano shrimp and a colony of red cherry shrimp...they've been breeding.
A friend of mine would like to take the tank and it's inhabitants off my hands,, but he's...
I have some Taxiphyllum Flame.
I started the tank around mid September, tying the moss to the top of the wood and it's done rather well. It's become quite the safe haven for my shrimp, I've found multiple molts inside.
I was hoping it would spread downwards though.
Will this happen in time...
Had a bit of a trim, hope I didn't got too over the top.
I planted some of the bits I cut, also nipping the tops off them.
Had a real problem with my cheery shrimp, they wouldn't leave me or my scissors alone!
My Rotala 'Vietnam H'ra' is getting a lil tall now.
I've heard that when you cut the plant, it spouts 2 stems at the cut point so gives a bushier look.
Roughly how low would you suggest cutting these plants?
Also, can you plant the cut parts?
Tanks under 2 months old.
My current PH meter has died, after just over a months use (came free with my TDS meter).
Can anyone recommend a replacement, preferable something that comes with the power for calibrating.
So many different 1's on Amazon with varying reviews.
Did a 50% water change on Sunday and turned my CO2 back on today, had it on really low. CO2 had been off for a few days to let my shrimp acclimitise.
Tested my PH and it's dropped down to 5.7, KH is 0, GH is 6.
Not sure what's gone on, I did my normal water change, RO water with Salty Shrimp...
I have a nano tank with Tropica Aquarium Soil Powder.
I'm using Salty Shrimp GH/KH+ to reminerlise my RO water, my water stats are PH 6.52, GH 7 and KH 2.
I was asking around about why my KH is so low and someone said it's because I have an active soil and would be better of switching to Salty...
I'm currently doing 20l water changes on my nano tank.
At the moment since there's no livestock in the tank, I'm not bothering to heat up the water.
But can anyone recommend me a small heater, plus a small water pump to help me with water changes?
Thank for all the help.
I am injecting CO2 at the moment, but an all-in-one solution appeals to me, this early on at least.
Flourish seems to come in *quite* a few flavours, would it be wise to pick up "trace" as well?
I've seen a product by Salty Shrimp for GH + KH.
My main concern is, does it have everything that my plants need?
Would this be a solution?
I use my Seachem products to get my GH and KH up to around 4. Then use a product like Shrimp King Mineral Fluid Double to increase the GH by another 2...
I'm using RO water on my planted and remineralising it with Seachem equilibrium.
Tanks been running for a month now, no livestock yet, but I would like to add some cherry shrimp. But I've been told that equilibrium doesn't have all the necessary minerals for shrimp, like calcium and magnesium...
New cabinet arrived, managed to move the tank without disturbing things too much.
Not much change up front, but I've definately seen growth in the back. Can't remember the name of this plant, but it's cool to see the head and leaves bend towards the light sources in the house when the tank...
I called the company about the cabinet.
They told me it wasn't braced in the middle and didn't recommend that I use it, so I've ordered the smaller cabinet.
Not had much time for the tank this week due to work, but done some testing.
0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, nitrates sitting around 10ppm.
O.k, quick re-think.
What about a slightly larger cabinet?
Is a bigger cabinet going to cause any problems? Because the tank would be sitting in the middle rather then on the edges.
Worried? I'm close to panicking!
I'm going to order the proper cabinet for the tank, unless anyone has any other suggestions.
Should I still get some acrylic to go underneath the tank...
Well, that's got me very worried now.
Should I get some perspex to cover the entire surface area of the drawer?
What kind of thickness 10mm?
Or am I fighting a losing battle, should I buy the Aquanano 40 cabinet?
Unfortunately I've not had time to do any water changes during the week. But I went and go some more RO and did a 50% change today.
These were my test results before the change.
So definately progressing along the nitrogen cycle.
I checked my RO water and got 0 with my ammonia test, but I...
Made a bit of a cockup, re-read the instructions today, it's meant to be a tablespoon, not a teaspoon.
PH seems really low, only 6.0, is that because I've been dosing incorrectly, or do I need a buffer?
I boiled the wood again on Tuesday and replanted everything.
Unfortunately woods still floating, so pinning it down with rocks and the heater.
CO2's been going for around 2 hours at this point, should I be aiming for a higher green. I know nothings in the tank but I've always worried about...
Been looking around for another place to buy RO water from, the only LFS who sells in my area charges £4.50 for 50l.
I noticed I have a Spotless Water station very close to me, and from reading the website, it sounds too good to be true.
Much cheaper then what...
Yeah, I royally messed up with the bogwood.
I'm hoping it settles by Tuesday when I do a water change so that I can sort out the gravel and replant stuff. If not I'll have to just keep waiting.
Planning to do a 50% water change weekly. That about right.?
Currently doing 6 hours of CO2 and...
Bloody woods still giving me grief, it's moved so much the front soil looks like a bunch of sand dunes.
I think we I need a water changed next week, I'll redo the tank again.
On the plus side, I got enough water in to get the heater and CO2 going.
There's a bubble counter on the regulator, I...
Regulator turned up and I picked up a CO2 canister as well.
Started filling up the tank more and the bogwood took off again! Weighted it down with another stone but still can't fill up the tank completely.
But did give me an excuse to replant some of the grass.
Well I've made a start.
Unfortunately I didn't soak the bogwood for long enough, so it's floating. I'm weighting it down with rocks at the moment. Hopefully I can finish filling it tomorrow. Going to have to keep misting the moss in the mean time.
Regulator is on it's way and I'm off to...
Another quick post, CO2 can wait till another day, but now looking at the order for my plants.
Was thinking of this.
Tropica Eleocharis acicularis 'mini' x 3
Java Moss x 1
Anubias Petite x 2
Rotala Vietnam H'ra x 2
O.k, you've put me off using a tin cans.
This is the unit I have my tank on.
I'm sure on size wise, but can you recommend a proper CO2 setup that will fit under there?
About 10 years ago, I used to rent a CO2 canister from a local gas supplier, but the bloody thing was massive.
Thanks for the reply.
So I don't need to worry about putting anything under the tank, to support it?
I have no room underneath the tank to hide a canister. How are the CO2 kits that come in cans? I saw 1 earlier "Tropica Plant Growth System 60", i know these won't be as good as a proper...
Thanks for all the replies.
I do like the look of E Acicularis, would drawf hairgrass be another option?
I've emailed Aqua One, asked them if they can give me some details on the lights.
What are my options for adding CO2? I don't have the room to add a big canister.
Also, what can I put...
I've recently purchases a Aqua One AquaNano 40 tank and I would like to set it up as a planted tank, but I could use some help.
I got some bogwood, bit bigger then I anticapated, but you can see the tank layout.
1st thing I need help with, is selecting some plants. I would really like...
Looking for a nice nano tank, 1 where the filter is hidden, seen 3 that I like the look of, but I could do with some opinions.
Fluval Flex 57
Fluval Spec 60L
Aqua One AquaNano 40
At the moment, I'm veering more towards the AquaNano 40.
I had a planted tank a few years ago, but despite my best efforts, everything went wrong.
I added more flow, better lighting, added CO2 and starting making my own ferts, but no matter what I tried, I couldn't get my algae problem under control. It ended in a rather depressing manner and I sold...
It's been awhile since I've kept a tank, about 7 years at the moment, and I've been feeling the urge to start again.
Last time I tried a planted tank, it didn't end well.
I had T5 lighting, CO2 and mixed my own fertilizers, but no...
Well I didn't need this, tried to take my diffuser out so I could clean it over night and I was pulling out the airline the glass snapped, that's the 2nd 1 this year...
I was gonna just order another Glass Jap Style Diffuser 1000, but since I'm making an order, was wondering if I should try...
Forgot to mention that I've reduced my CO2 and lighting times by 1 hour for the last few weeks to see if that help, I've also replaced my T5 light today, since I think they were well over a year and a 1/2 old.
I've cut down my rosefolia and moved it to the front of the tank...
Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but me and the fish tank are still going at it tooth and nail with algae problems.
Again the picture are being cut, I'll post direct link
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff26 ... 408111.jpg
I've moved the spray bar closer to the top of the tank to help...
I've had my CO2 off for an extended peroid today while i clean the diffuser (ran out of bleech, long story short, my CO2's been off all day).
For the 1st time in weeks/months I actually saw my cardinal tetra's swimming around the tank, normally they hide at the back/bottom of the tank behind...
I was a bad boy last weekend, I was so busy building a new that I didn't prune or do a water change on the tank.
But aftera bit of maintenance today, this is what she's currently looking like.
(for some reason the forums cutting off a good part of this picture, here's a direct link)
I've doubled my dosing the past week, trace, macro and easycarbo. Unfortunately I missed a day of dosing macro solution, was late for work and my solution had run out and I didn't have time to mix a new bottle
Fish wise, I would like to start restocking.
After the CO2 accident...
Sorry it's been awhile since I posted.
I managed to cut out the internal filter, wasn't that bad in the end, I took some pictures a few days ago, so this is what the tank looks like at the moment, though I did have a quick trim on sunday.
I've got the diffuser on the left now under the...
Plants are now in, was more crypts then I expected and less P.helferi, so swings and roundabouts.
I've also started dosing Easycarbo, I do it in the morning along with my solutions. I'm only doing 2.5ml at a time because the tanks only lightly planted.
With treating the GSA on the stems, you...
Sorry I havn't updated, work went from dead to nutty.
The sunday before last, I had another blitz, took all the plants, cleaned them and replanted. Also mixed up my solutions and have been dosing.
I've put the proper solution into my drop checker and I've managed to turn it green without...
Stroke of luck, all my chemicals have arrived.
Now for mixing the solutions, I'm using the Dosing Calculator, I need people to check my figures to make sure I'm right.
Tank Vol = 125l
Amount to add = 7 Teaspoons
Amount of water = 250ml
Amount to dose = 10ml
Thanks, I'll keep the rosefolia and see how she does.
The plant is the foreground, grows like a weed, much to it's credit, but unfortunately I can't plant it, everytime I do, the lower part of the plant dies and it simply floats to the top, so at the moment I've got it pinned under a rock which...
The filter arrived today, had to DIY the spray bar a little since the pipping was too short so it was basically sitting out of the water.
Equiptment is looking a bit squashed in there, but hopefully should be better once I can remove the internal.
Removing the Valis was a bit mess, roots were...
Starting to understand some of my fundamental flaws now, re-read both of the dry fertiliser guides and Ceg's CO2 guide.
So today I've ordered
TetraTec EX1200 External Filter (from what I understand, it should come with a spray bar)
4 dKH Solution with Bromo Blue
I've setup the tank as fig.1, simple because I don't have the right parts to make the internal powerhead face forwards. I've also put the diffuser plate much further down below the koralia to see how it does, the rattling hasn't started yet amazingly.
Think I am going to go down the road of...
O.k, I was going to do it this way.
But from what I'm understanding from Ceg, I should be doing it this way?
I don't know how to go about or if it's possible to attach a spray bar to the internal filter.
If I was going to go down the road of switching to an external, what would be a good...
If you look at the other thread I linked, you can see pictures of the algea.
I used to have it setup like that, but the problem was that the gas used to get stuck in the powerhead and make a god awful rattling sound. Which is why at the moment it's positioned below the filter powerhead.
I've had my tank up and running for over a year now and it's been pretty much up and down, truth be told, more downs then ups, algea has been a constant problem and recently a family member knocked up my CO2 unit when they thought they turned it down. Of course by the time I noticed I lost all...
We built ourselves a pond a few years back and it's doing pretty well.
However we've had a pretty persistant problem where the pond is a rather nice shade of green.
I've tried adding products that's meant to help, but I havn't seen any difference, long or short term.
The pond does get...
Errr slight problem now
I soaked it in a bleach mixture overnight and they came out sparkling clean, only problem is that the diffuser has a load of bleach stuck in the area underneath the plate.
I turned it upside down and hooked up the CO2 to kinda blast it out, which largly worked...
Just a quick question, my diffuser and a few other pieces of glass equiptment are starting to get completely covered in algea.
What's the best way to clean them? Scrubbing hasn't worked on the diffuser.
No real improvements, can't say I've seen a decrease in algea, but I think that's because I'm still not really turning up the CO2 much. I can't seem to turn my drop testers green without harming the fish :?
Had a major clean up today, damn vallis is starting to annoy me, it's getting everywhere! :?
Gonna bleach the diffuser tonight, but I forgot to ask 1 question before.
My foxtail won't stay in the gravel for love nor money, so I normally let it kind of float in limbo in the corner. Any...
O.k, opperational "Clean up" is in effect as from today.
My new powerhead has been installed and I've moved the diffuser below it, I've also dropped down to 2x24w.
I'm not expecting overnight changes and I need to get in there on the weekend and have another trim, but hopefully now I'm...
Sorry for being so slow, but thank you all for your replies.
For ferts I dose 2.5ml TPN+ daily.
So for a plan of attack for solving me problems, 1st I'm going to remove 1 of the T5's to bring me down to 2x24W and next I need to address my flow problem.
I'm looking at the the Koralia Nano which...
Thank you for such a speedy reply :)
I'll try increasing my CO2 levels slowly and see how the fish do, though I am worried about them.
While I would love to add 5 Otto's, will I be overstocked with that many?
Hello all, I signed up to this forum awhile ago at the suggestion of someone from another fish forum, but due to a mix of busyness and pure laziness, I've not managed to post :?
I have quite a few different questions about my tank, which I'm sure belong in seperate subsections of the forum...
