    Calculating Tank Turnover

Thank you all. I will have to look for a powerhead. I need a quiet one as I am so pleased with my Fluval 306 filter, it is incredibly quiet, so don't want something to turn the tank into a noisy thing.

Into the Green - 240L Rainbowfish Tank

So I put my existing fish in at the weekend, and added some more Rummy Nose Tetras, so now have 10, and 5 young Angels. I bought a 10L Fluval tank for my Siamese fighter, who is currently sulking. He has a bit of Cambomba that I got free with the Angels. I'll add some photos later.

Thanks that is the same as my wood. Glad it's ok! I couldn't remember the wood doing that before.

Glue like stuff on new red moor wood

Any ideas what this is and is it safe? No fish in my tank yet but want to put them in on Saturday. I washed the wood before putting in tank, but didn't soak it. https://www.flickr.com/photos/pluginbaby/shares/4708i7

    Calculating Tank Turnover

I've read I need to aim for 10x turnover. I have a 240L tank, with a Fluval 306 external filter which is 1150 LPH. Do I need to add a powerhead? I can't remember the formula to work out the tank turnover!

Into the Green - 240L Rainbowfish Tank

Here's some updated photos after filling the tank Sunday. The tank is clearing nicely, but needs the inevitable clean inside and outside the glass. Lots of bubbles! Yesterday Tonight I decided to get an external rather than faffing around. So my husband cut out the internal filter...

Help keeping plants wet while waiting for tank

What I did in the end was left them in the bucket as above, no direct light, and covered with cling film. They were fine :)

Into the Green - 240L Rainbowfish Tank

I will have to hold down the wood until it stops floating! Should be easier without any fish in there to disturb it. I haven't seen the Flourite in any tanks in real life, but did a lot of reading and settled on these two substrates as I wanted as black as I could whilst still being 'useful'. I...

Into the Green - 240L Rainbowfish Tank

I welcome suggestions on ferts, but will probably use the Easylife system as before. I don't want to go CO2 yet as have a 4 year old and a baby on the way, so too dangerous incase they touch something. This was my old Rainbowfish tank - 3ft 190L. I decided the Rainbows needed more room, so...

Into the Green - 240L Rainbowfish Tank

Hey all, I had a break from fishkeeping for about a year, after we went a little crazy! Had about 12 tanks at one time and kept marines. It all got too much and we sold everything up. My son then asked for a tank while we were in Pets at Home, and we got a small tank to keep a fighter fish and...

Help keeping plants wet while waiting for tank

Thanks, yeah it will be pretty much the same but the substrate I have got will be softening my water. Though this will be a gradual thing when I fill up so it shouldn't shock them. They have just arrived but not unpacking yet as my tank should be here soon :)

Help keeping plants wet while waiting for tank

Am I right in thinking I can put the plants in a bucket of dechlorinated water, and they will be OK from now until Sunday (2 days)? Basically I am having everything delivered today as I work full time and have a day off as I'm working tomorrow. Everything means the tank, substrate and plants...

50g High Light Low Tech Journal

Thanks, yeah I realise the potential problems I'll have. I have suffered algae before and it's horrible stuff. I am going to try going down this route one final time and be religious in my carbon and ferts dosing to see if I can keep it at bay. Otherwise I may have to give CO2 a try. I am a bit...

50g High Light Low Tech Journal

The plan is to put the Aponogeton ulvaceus at the back right as it's a bit bare there. The Hygrophila Rosae Australis mid-right, and the Juncus Repens - not sure yet  Moss balls at the front, and the floating plant; half in here and half in my Betta's tank. That will be me pretty much...

New substrate for 50g - advice please

Thanks, haven't got time to be doing any DIY at the moment though. Got a baby due in 4 days  Any root tablet recommendations or would I be OK with just the Profito? I don't think any of the plants I have chosen are demanding, but please correct me if I am wrong 8)

New substrate for 50g - advice please

Thanks a lot. I suppose I'd have to remove all the fish to replace the substrate like this. Hmm. I can't turn off one of the lights unfortunately, they are operated by the same switch. How much roughly would CO2 cost me to set up and maintain on this tank?

New substrate for 50g - advice please

Just used the calculator and think I need 20l of substrate for my 190l 50g tank (100 x 40 x 55cm). I would like to get some sort of fertiliser for my plants, but cannot use gravel on top as I have Cories and Khuli loaches who need sand. I was thinking of getting some more silver sand or...

    Getting rid of BBA

Oh just need to add that my lights are not on very long now, about 5 hours. I am going to buy a digital timer to make sure it gets the same amount every day. I also forgot to say I have T5 2 x 39w bulbs in there. Sorry, that's very important to know!

    Getting rid of BBA

Hi all, I am back again with another attempt at a planted tank. We have moved house now so are settled and ready to start. I am expecting a baby in 4 days lol so start up needs to be fairly quick  So, I have got BBA, diagnosed on another forum, but will post the photos below for you to...

    Help please with substrate

Hi all, I am looking for some help with substrate please. Basically I wasn't thinking about doing a planted tank when I set my 50g up again. Just got some apparently black (more grey when lights are on) sand which makes a thin layer over the tank. However I bought some Rainbowfish and read...
