Diary of a Rather Large Tank

I'm sorry for the delay in updating, there's been a lot of 'life stuff' going on  Anyway,we chickened out of the high tech,CO2 system in the end,at least for now,but the tank has been set up for a while now and seems fine.We currently have 3 x 150w halides but the tank still doesn't look...

Chocolate Gouramis - I have Fry and need Advice

I know,if they didn't eat so well I'd be a bit concerned but they have great appetites and little fat tummies,so maybe they'll suddenly put on a growth spurt lol!

Chocolate Gouramis - I have Fry and need Advice

Haven't updated in a while for a very good reason, there's not much to say! The babies are growing slowly but surely and are now supplementing their diet with baby daphnia as well as their favourite microworm and baby brine shrimps. They have inherited a few tank mates, red crystal shrimps,who...

    Next Stage - Plants?

The current situation with the big tank is that we have the wood and substrate in place. Two of the eventual four 150w halides are here and the tank has cover glasses. The sump will be fitted in approx 2/3 weeks so there is no filtration/Co2,but we can put heaters/water circulation pumps inside...

Just happened to be walking through the dining room by the new tank when I saw that someone has already moved in(and I haven't even cycled it yet  ) Grabbed the camera to show you all: Needless to say the tank is now covered, but at least I'm confident that the wood is secure

The bracing bars are completely dry now so the wooden supports have been taken off.Billy has also siliconed some glass wedges to the floor of the tank to make extra sure the wood can't kick forwards into the glass. Next will be the substrate :)

How many weeds do I need?

I have never heard of this before and I am very interested in trying it as I would like a nice carpet of low plants. Are there any particular types of carpet plants that work better with this method,I'm guessing HC but what about something like a pygmy sword or crypt? I've never tried to grow a...

Diary of a Rather Large Tank

I must admit that I am a bit concerned about the amount of plants I need to buy,I know that the only way to help to combat algae is by planting heavily from the start but i have no idea how many plants to start with and whether I need to concentrate on stem plants that grow fast or whether I can...

Diary of a Rather Large Tank

We've put the wood in tonight, just three pieces, but they are large pieces! We've also fixed the upper bracing bars, which are currently being supported by wooden planks, giving the tank a lovely 'mock tudor' look,at least for the next 48 hours until the silicone is completely cured. As far...

How many weeds do I need?

Hello all,me again  Another question about setting up the 8 footer. Right,I know that I need to plant as many fast growing weeds as possible at the start to hopefully stop any algae blooms but I'm unsure of how many/what type to get. Should I aim for x amount of bunches per sq ft, should...

Chocolate Gouramis - I have Fry and need Advice

They all seem alive and well this morning :D I can't really take any credit for getting them to breed, they are in a softwater community tank and they just did it themselves,I certainly didn't try to recreate any special conditions etc.It was just luck really, but I'm not complaining 8) The...

We will be using 4 x 150w metal halides with a moonlight for night time viewing.I've asked about this previously and was told this would be enough. The lights will be individual pendants rather than a multi light unit. A couple of people has mentioned unstable CO2 because of the type of...

Chocolate Gouramis - I have Fry and need Advice

I have posted this on PFK and TFF but so far no one has been able to help. Diary of a Rather Large Tank

The tank will have it's own RO unit set up with a float for automatic top ups but as far as large water changes are concerned we are still undecided about setting up a perry pump and solenoid. The tank is just a few feet from an outside drain so it's fairly easy to attach a tube to a pump in the...

Diary of a Rather Large Tank

I've just realised after reading your post John that I haven't posted the tank dimensions  . It's 8'x3'x3' and the sump will be approx.6'x2' although that hasn't been finalised yet.We are going to use 4 x 150w metal halides and for the first time we will use Co2 and go a bit more high...

Diary of a Rather Large Tank

Substrate for a large tank - Ecocomplete plus what else?

Thanks for your reply,I've found a supplier of Akadama not too far from us in Redditch who sell it for £5.99 for 10kg so that could be the way to go I think. Using the substrate calculator I need another 250lbs of substrate so I reckon 12 bags of Akadama may be about right,at £6 per bag...

I should've said that hubby builds tanks/filtration systems as part of his job, sorry for not mentioning that before  The glass is 15mm on the walls and 2 x12mm at the base, siliconed together. The photo shows the tank after the first stage was completed, since then the lower bracing bars...

Large Empty Tank - Looking for Suggestions/Help

Thanks for your comments/suggestions everyone. I think we'll start off with the low tech approach with the option of adding Co2 to the sump at a later date.We have several large pieces of wood which are currently soaking, these will form the main structure to the design. Then I think it'll be...

I normally try not to buy anything I don't recognise but yesterday I spotted an unusual plant with lovely red undersides so I took a risk and bought it. Quick update as things have moved along :) Firstly I should just mention that the tank was fully matured as it had been used for larger fish and plastic plants for the last 18 months, which had been moved, so I did not have to think about cycling etc.I did not make that clear in my first post...
