I used one of those scourers to remove a combo of gas and diatoms after I was forced to neglect the tank for a while due to injury and it left scratches all over the glass. They are deep enough to be visible when the tank is full and annoy me so much that I'm considering replacing my 5'x2'x2'...
For further info.
The plants are
swords (regularly eaten by a catfish so not big as they are trimmed of damaged leaves weekly)
A variety of crypts
A variety of Anubias on wood
The fish are
10 angelfish (about 3.5 inches so not full grown)
Two rainbow fish (full grown)
3 kribensis
5 cories
10...
Hi, My tank has been running for years and I'm suddenly seeing diatoms on plant leaves this week. Not a serious outbreak but noticeable. I know it will resolve itself as it has in the past when I've moved stuff about or added too many fish at once. I'm just curious about the possible cause...
I've followed your advice added a third filter, moved the co2 timer forward to maximise co2 at lights on and adjusted the spraybars to maximise flow so I hope it isn't co2/flow related. Can't increase the amount of co2 going in without risking CO2 toxicity.
Been thinking about it and the GSA...
Got a few spots of GSA on the remaining anubias in my 500l tank. It is the only sign of algae so far.
I seem to remember reading on here somewhere that upping PO4 can help clear it.. Did I imagine it?
Currently dose
(2tsp KN03 + 1tsp KH2PO) X3/wk
(1tsp trace + 1tsp Epsom salts) x2/wk...
Is there an algae that can look like reddish brown whiskers on the edge of leaves?
My 90l tank has had algae issues due to a bad layout and intermittent filter failures.
Cladophora appeared on top of the driftwood directly under the lights and the edges of the plants became covered in what...
It was just a thought as I know how expensive it is to get new plants.
Would have only been a short term fix though as you need to find the underlying cause. One of the experts will be able to give you a plan but part of it is bound to be gettIng rid of the algae infested leaves.. :(
Sorry totally off topic  Have you tried Publix. In Orlando they have aisles just for us Brits and stock a few British ales or at least they did a few years ago. Don't even know if they are in Miami.
I thought elodea didn't do well at warmer temperatures. Had about ten stems in my bargain pack last week but threw them out thinking that they'd be no good.
This might help

what about removing the messy fish and replacing with algae eaters. They might nibble the plants a bit but might help clean up too
You'll need a prescription for antibiotics and I can't see many vets giving you one to treat algae.
Easycarbo, excel and AE Design liquid carbon all help to clear algae. Have a search on here. There are several good threads about treating algae with this stuff.
I'm just starting out but...
Just found some pics that I could view with the iPod and I see what you mean. They do look like cory eggs. Some baby corys in the tank would be so cool!
Yes. There's 5 panda cories in the tank. I wonder if they could have been. I've scraped them off now but if more appear I'll leave them and see what happens :). Exciting stuff.
My googling skills obviously need work
Thanks
Only apple and nerite snails at the moment and they wouldn't lay eggs like those. The remaining assassins are all in the 48l so I'd ruled out snails.
I only posted this as I was stumped. I wasn't sure about diatoms as I'd always thought they looked more like a scattering of brown sand on...
Hi
Can I have you expert opinion on what this might be.
It looks someone has drawn a little cluster of circles on the glass with pencil. The photo doesn't show it particularly clearly. Scrapes off easily. First thought was diatoms as this tank is new but ammonia has consistently read 0...
