I'd probably stick them near the top, just so they don't get fouled by debris, but it probably doesn't matter much.

Ocean Free Hydra electro-plate filtration - thoughts please

Thanks Darrel, I hadn't spotted that particular discussion. I agree completely with 'fmueller' about wishing there was data for long term and vs cycled tank comparisons. If what data there is from the company is to be believed, it would suggest that the filters at least significantly reduce...

Ocean Free Hydra electro-plate filtration - thoughts please

Ah. I may have muddied the (already rather opaque) water by misinterpreting their rubbish diagrams/English. The explicit claim is that the filters push the reaction from ammonia towards ammonium - so perhaps generating OH- as part of that reaction, rather than using OH- to achieve it as I suggested.

Ocean Free Hydra electro-plate filtration - thoughts please

Hi all, Full disclosure: I'm currently working part time in a LFS, and we recently received a load of new inline and internal filters from a company called Ocean Free. These are being touted as the 'next big thing' and claim to do away with the need for cycling new tanks by ionizing ammonia...

Flow In A Large Low Tech Tank

Yeah the Bucket was only at about 3x turnover but that was with a full length spraybar. I'd not worry about extreme levels of flow in low tech, just try and find a way of spreading it around the tank efficiently.

Cloudy water - a little trick

Hi Sanj. I'm still running this. I have 4 socks that I alternate. Depending on how much mess I've been making in the tank they need changing every 1-3 weeks. I just wash them in the machine when I'm down to the last clean one. The tank still clouds up again within a couple of days if I don't run...

    Koralia I'm not happy !!

Try running it without the plastic shroud/grille on the front and see if that makes a difference. I don't recall mincing anything when I had it running like that, but it might have changed the flow pattern a bit.

    Koralia I'm not happy !!

I haven't used mine in a long time and to be honest can't remember if it was magnetic or not (I think it was, bought it about 4 years ago which I think is when they updated them?) but it also developed a rattle. It seemed to be due mainly to the impeller shroud - when I removed that it stopped...

Or if you go low tech without too much light and nice stable water parameters then you can have a (almost!) completely algae free tank with almost zero flow and almost no maintenance, a la the first iteration of my Bucket.

New Ehem 2073 Pro 3 - Very Noisy

If it's a hum from the motor unit, rather than a rattle, then you might be right out of luck. My 2213 does that and has proved unfixable, although a heavy weight on top does dampen it somewhat. If it doesn't go away soon I'd try for a replacement.

New Ehem 2073 Pro 3 - Very Noisy

I found with my 2324 that the Chinese made impeller supplied was still rattling after several weeks of 'bedding in'. I switched it for a German made replacement after reading several threads with people having issues with the original impellers and it's been almost silent ever since (until the...

    Dennerle Eckfilter nano filter modification

With mine I just replace the floss now and again with some cut from a bit sheet of cheap pond filter floss I bought on ebay. Seems to do the trick. Not sure its worth spending money on fancy bits and bobs. Or as Yo-han suggests, just remove the cartridge and put some ceramic or glass media in.

    Tetratec replacement advice?

Eheim definitely aren't infallible, possibly due to moving much of their production to China. I've got a 2213 with an unfixable buzz in the head unit and a 2324 which made an awful racket until I replaced the Chinese made impeller with a German spare. I know they have an amazing reputation but...

    Eheim 2213 Noise

Same issue with mine, plus I had impellor rattle. Replacing the impellor fixed the latter, but there seems no easy way to sort out the vibration hum. I have a big bag of sand on the top now to minimise it but if I'd bought it new I'd definitely have been asking for a replacement.

Parasites in the filter! Lots of them, help!

I wouldn't worry too much, pretty much all tanks will contain some degree of microfauna or other, and the vast majority of it is just bonus fish food. Do you have any particular reason to suspect that your fish have health issues or parasites? If so, its unlikely to be down these critters...

Turning Koralia into a mini internal filter...

Low (or even no) flow is fine for low tech in my experience, assuming you've got sufficient filtration for whatever your bioload is.

Turning Koralia into a mini internal filter...

Yeah I did a very similar thing when I ran my tank without a proper filter. I only wanted the koralia to provide very slow water circulation anyway, so I bought a block of filter foam that already had a hole cut down the middle and just wedged the koralia into that. Instant Hamburg mattenfilter.

Help with water changes! how do you change tank water?

Well one solution would be to buy a more concentrated dechlorinator (one for ponds, perhaps), which should only cost you pennies instead of pounds at each water change.

Cloudy water - a little trick

I would say it cut the flow by about half... I have a slightly convoluted setup for this whereby the sock is in a secondary filter plummed in serial with my main filter. The secondary filter isn't running because I don't need the flow, just acting as an extra chamber. So it goes INTAKE - EHEIM...

Biological filtration - one for Darrel, Clive and co.

Biological filtration - one for Darrel, Clive and co.

Don't have much time so only given it a skim read, but yes, the paper suggests that archaea, rather than bacteria, seem to be the most prevalent agents of nitrification in most the aquariums sampled. "The results of this study revealed that, based on amoA gene abundances, AOA (ammonia-oxidizing...

    The best nano filter?

I'm also very happy with my Dennerle Eckfilter. Very adjustable, very quiet, seems like decent flow to me, shrimp safe and doesn't take up much room. Only downside I can see is you don't have many options for playing around with the media as they use triangular cartridges. Can pick them up for...

    Sponge filter in planted nano

Shrimp should be fine with just a sponge filter. Lack of flow shouldn't be a problem as long as you keep the whole system 'lean', ie don't inject CO2 or dose heavy ferts and don't overfeed the shrimp.
  37. BigTom

    what filter?

I've got the Dennerle eckfilter (nano corner job) for my 25L cube. Can definitely recommend it, very adjustable, nice and quiet and easy to hide thanks to it's trinagular shape. Would probably go for the XL version for a 40L tank though.

Flow in shallow el natural setup

Asked this in my journal but no response so figured I'd try here as well... So with most el natural setups the general idea is to have as little surface movement as possible to hold in CO2 produced by decaying matter in the bottom of the tank. However, as my tank only has about 25cm of water in...
