Thanks Jason! Yeh I have been to HK fish street many times since I was a kid.....my parents had to prize me away kicking and screaming because I would not leave haha :P So many times I wanted to buy things and bring it all back home! Unbelieveable things on sale and the prices :-O

    Our mad crazy hobby!

Hahaa....did you really go there just for the fish market? I have been meaning to go to the TGM for a loooong time! Combination of distance and subconscious procrastanating to avoid me spending all the money I have!

    Our mad crazy hobby!

Of course! It's all relative to everyone's situation. When I was a kid I spent all my pocket money on fish and equipment!!! All my family members thought I was mad...well maybe I was a little :P

    Our mad crazy hobby!

Sam I don't think that is mad at all.........just a necessity lol I've never seen an opti-white tank in the flesh (or should that be in the glass) but I ordered a 4ft tank with an opti-white front glass to arrive in the summer so I can't wait! Stickleback that is the kind of story I am thinking...

    Our mad crazy hobby!

As a person who has kept fish from 4 years old and had a planted tank the last 5 years, I have gone to some lengths to buy fish, pick up equipment etc. I just wanted to ask you all what are some of the lengths you have gone to to further your hobby, to buy fish, to pick up plants or anything...

UK Shops for the Planted Tank Hobbyist

Aquatic Design Centre is very good, I always make a detour for it, but then again I am in London a lot. They know their stuff and seem to have the latest things plant related. The price is very good too. Surprisingly I get a lot of plants from Pets at Home; they have a lot of choice and it's...

    Newbie 1st question

Hi, Welcome to UKAPS! Well substrate wise it's completely up to you, for example you might have price constraints etc. But at the moment I am using a JBL substrate in a 12" cube tank and this seems to be working really well. However, this has to be topped of with another substrate to keep it...

    Greenline Closing Down

Haha Gill, if only I had such limitless resources (disclaimer: I am laughing for comedic effect, I do not condone such behaviour!) Seriously, what did you get from greenline? I got a red spatterdock, bolbitis and N. stellata.

    Greenline Closing Down

Wow Gill you went all out then! I only had £10 to spend so I got a red spatterdock as well. These grow very large don't they? Does anyone know what the ideal conditions for these are?

Surface Scum - Keeps Coming Back

Hi Superman, Firstly do you use a yeast based CO2 system? This could be the cause perhaps. Or do you think it is something that you have fed the fish?? Hope this helps

    Greenline Closing Down

Well I phoned them today and their automated message is that fall in sales and spiralling costs have made their situation "untenable" so it does look rather final sad to say

    Greenline Closing Down

Yes Spalding I was confused too and still am about whether they are closing for good or not. As regards to the packing I am sure all will be ok so long as you order before the closing date. As fas as I understand it they are a family run company so I hope it is nothing majorly serious for them...

    Greenline Closing Down

I know what you mean spalding, but from what I remember they did close down once before and then they came back from their hiatus so who knows....fingers crossed they might do it again. I'm thinking of whether to order a few plants or not as I was considering planting up a 12" cube tank I got...

    Greenline Closing Down

I've had a look at the site and there are some real bargains to be had there! O if only I had the money...... But seriosuly it's a real shame as I brought stuff from them in the past ant they have always been excellent.

    Greenline Closing Down

I am surprised as well. However, there seems to be some conflicting info as the main page says closing down and another says plants need to go so that repairs can be carried out(?)

Novice Looking For Advice - On a tight budget

I personally find the ladder method of delivery better because pressure problems do not occur (of course unless the yeast gets towards the end of its effectiveness), inevitably after the peak of CO2 output the pressure drops because enzyme activity slows down. This drop in pressure will affect...

Novice Looking For Advice - On a tight budget

If it's 60L then I would have just the one bottle otherwise you might find that you will overdose on CO2 when the thing gets going, unless of course you are going to have a lot of surface agitation. If I were you I would buy 2 fizzy drinks bottles (of the same brand etc), obviously you would use...

Novice Looking For Advice - On a tight budget

Hi Jwrage, My home made CO2 is exacltly as you described It is 2 drinks bottles connected with a T valve, just make sure that they are fizzy drinks bottles! Also make sure to silicon all joints when you make it. I think you might have problems with a diffuser not only with pressure but also...

Novice Looking For Advice - On a tight budget

Dan is right, you can use bamboo as long as the roots are in the water and the leaves are out (although it is not a marsh plant). The best bamboo to use are the ones found in ikea or florists (i.e. the individual thick stem variety in ikea for around 70-80p each). I have seen this done before...

I'm sorry I can't help you there as I'm not the most technical of people. Do you have to have the hood on? If not you could invest in a luminaire(?)

Novice Looking For Advice - On a tight budget

Hi jwrage, I too am in your position and set up my tank with as little as possible as I don't have too much money and given the current economical current, well..... Anyway here is what I did: For substrate I used Red Sea Flora Base, it is a complete substrate that requires no work done to it...
