Hi Guys,
Just a quick question,
I'm about to get up a new tank and was wondering whether it is okay to re-use old filter media? It is all clean and dry but I'm a little concerned about possible algae or things which may be lurking in there that I cannot see.
Keen to know people's...
The Hydor heater and UP inline atomizer is a great combo that I have used to great effect, minimizing the amount of hardware inside the tank and therefore, in my opinion making it appear more attractive and natural.
So its absolutely fine to use both, what filter are you using? Its best to use...
I use a Eheim ecco pro 130. Great little external filter. If you don't want to have a filter inside the tank or hanging on the side. Plus you can invest in a smart pair of lily pipes for it at some point.
the prices of them seem to vary massively, at my LFS they sell them at £65 and you can get them online for £30. I use a 200W on a 60 litre tank and its perfect. So I imagine a 300W will be about right for a 180L. Doesnt sound normal, the black sounds like its burnt out.
No worries. That looks ideal, very good price for a great filter. If you wanted to go all out you could even buy an external Hydor 200W heater and attach that to the eheim so you would have filter and heater outside the tank with the 13mm pipes. Im going for that one when I order my 30L nano gear.
That is true, they don't deliver what they say. Shrimp dont like to much flow at all though! Richard, you tank isn't to heavily planted and is quite open so there can be a good flow motion around the tank. No need for more than 500lph for a 27L really.
I will be going with the high light planted option so I think your right, the eheim is the way to go for a proper good long term filter. Thanks a lot, really helpful. Are those X2 11Watt bulbs you have on those nanos?
Out of interest are the shrimps fine with the co2 in the tank, Do you turn it...
Rena tubing is 16/22mm. So would not fit the 13mm Glassware. I have an XP4 which is great on my big tank. Im also looking at which external filter to use on my 30L nano. Been looking at the eheim ecco pro 130, looks really good. Here's my thread...

I will be putting a black carbon sponge over the end of the filter inlet pipe to stop them being sucked in, plus they like this to graze on and eat the stuff that gathers on the sponge.
I know the eheim has a better brand name and is reliable and is a nice bit of kit. Do like the way the Dennerle one is small enough to stand behind the tank though. i worry that 500lph will be too much flow in a shrimp tank.
Im Currently doing a bit of research into setting up my first Planted Nano tank for shrimp and a few micro fish. Im planning on getting a ADA 30X30X30 cube tank.
Just wondering what people thought would be the best external filter for it? I want to keep it with as little hardware inside as...
Recommended Hang on the side/Sponge filter for shrimp tank?
Thinking of setting up a ADA mini s Shrimp tank and an looking into small filters for it, Sponge filters are supposedly the best. Can anyone recommend the best filter to get? Thanks.
EDIT: This post has been merged from the Invert...
Im wanting to invest in an ADA mini S as a shrimp tank and would love to hear what people think is the best hang on the side or HOB filter for one of these? I have seen Eheim liberty's and others but would appreciate another point of view from experiences etc......
Thanks.
Hydor Koralia Nano 1600L/H arrived today and is perfect for the 60L. Just the right amount of flow I need in there now I think. Isnt as powerful as I was worried that it might be.
Oh right. Exactly, as people have said the pump rates are often half when full of filter media. Well if you havent got enough flow with all that going on in your 125L then I definitely don't have enough. Will get the 1600L/H. Thanks alot guys.
Im just wondering if the 900L/H would stop it settling there as well though. As you say that the fish did get blown about a fair bit at first and your tank is twice the water capacity of mine at 125L when mine is only 60. :/
Would you recommend the 1600lh one for me then Matty? Still effective enough flow to keep the crap from settling on my hairgrass etc though? My only concern is that it will blast the fish all over the place.
Surely a '1600' L/H one would just be crazy and a little much. especially for the fish and shrimp? The flow in there at the moment is okay, there is a motion around the tank, just not quite enough to keep all the dirt moving and there are dead spots.
Hi Everyone.
Sorry to put another post up about powerheads and flow. Just a simple question.
Is a Hydor Koralia Nano 900 l/h big enough to create enough flow in my heavily planted 60L?
There is dirt that settles on the hairgrass and things and I had a problem with BGA and increased flow...
Heating waste is not a good thing, or certainly not as good as having an in-line heater with the water running through it on its way back into the tank which is the clean filtered water. It is good to grow good bacteria yes. However heating waste creates the sort of bacteria that you don't want...
I have a 60L as well and had the same Dilemma a while ago. I wanted everything to be external.
I would not go for an eheim filter with the built in heater. You are effectively heating the waste and the water going through the filter being cleaned, this can cause a lot of bacteria to grow and...
