Tangerine Tiger Shrimp in High Tech Tank???

I have tan tigers in high tech, they’re slow to get going but are as robust as cherries once the colony is stable. They need more minerals and protein than cherries to be successful. Co2 they don’t seem bothered by.

Removing All Shrimps - impossible ?

Depends, I’ve sold them as “wild” cherries in the past as they have a certain charm to those that don’t want super bold colours and though not lucrative it always provided enough to justify the effort.

    Snails

I tried them and it’s worth noting they will turn aquasoil into slurry.
  4. Garuf

    Snails

It’s also what you want them for, snails for algae aren’t the same snails as snails for aesthetics, aren’t the same as decomposers. For example viviparous snails will tick your box of no eggs, but you will find them usually larger and more specialist than say, a pond snail. Have a look here for...

    Red Cherries X Blue Cherries = ?

Purple? Not really. Genetics don’t really work that way. Blue and reds usually give a mix of lesser coloured blue and red and after a few generations you’ll get mostly lesser coloured red brown.

    CPDs murdered a shrimp!?

Yeah, if already dead all fish will pick at a tasty shrimp inc things we consider algae eaters like otocinclus. I’m gut instinct is that is what the op has observed. deep breath howeverrrr, knowing the species in question from daily observation, I know that if they get a chance and get lucky...

    CPDs murdered a shrimp!?

Yeahhhhhh Jaseon is on the money with this one, unless it’s an optical illusion and that’s a 10gallon bowl it’s a bit too far along the nano scale for fish and as he points out, shrimp, when added will be very much victimised given their very strong hunting response. I feed mine on a mix of...

    CPDs murdered a shrimp!?

Oh yeah, they’ll take an unlucky adult cherry if they get half a chance. They’re extremely proficient and active hunters more than willing to take a chance on something many times larger than their mouth.

    Can Tetras kill shrimp?

I was about to post that I have least killis and even the tiny males will take baby shrimp. I haven’t seen a single baby shrimp in the tank with galaxies, they’re extremely predatory when you watch their behaviour. Neons exhibit much the same behaviour where if it enters the water column and it...

    Best Shrimp Setup Resource

I was breeding black rose cherries in a 60x30x30 tetra off the shelf tank, the one with the full length light, usually it costs about £40, can be found for around a tenner every now and then as a play mobile set. Threw the filter out and used a second hand 2213. Set up was 50% of substrate...

Shrimp suitable for a planted community tank?

Aspistogamma, even the tiny ones, are a gamble with shrimps… same for all the centrepiece fish you picked. I’ve kept aspistogamma borelli in the past and one trio left the cherry shrimps alone save for one or two babies and another trio where even inch long amanos weren’t safe.

(ID help?) Edit: Just a baby ramshorn never mind me

It's a ramshorn of some kind, I get have the same ones in my tanks, don't really mind them but they do bully the shrimp of their food so I try to thin numbers some. They get quite big, around 15mm shell is the largest of mine.

Easiest cherry shrimp to care for and breed.

It's best to buy juveniles, they're more adaptable and give a better chance of them adapting to your water. The pumpkin orange ones are nice, I'd like them for my next setup.

Easiest cherry shrimp to care for and breed.

I have black rose that I stopped selecting colour lines from because I'm lazy. If you're consistent and your tank parameters don't swing so wildly from tap, they will adapt and reproduce provided there's sufficient higher-protein food. I suspect all cherries except the extremely selected lines...

  24. Garuf

    Do i have baby Amano's?

Indeed, most shops don't know any better, it's on their lists as Amanos, why would they think they're not. That and they are ill equipped to give the correct species when they're outwardly identical especially if they don't suspect otherwise.

    Do i have baby Amano's?

There was threads about this a few years back and I second what NA Fan says, they're not true amano's, in the same way that some plant species are impossible to tell apart without looking at a microscope the same is said for the above shrimps. It's a case of mistaken identity compounded by a...

Possible causes of cherry shrimp deaths

Most people on here don't use dechlorinator, I hadn't for years till I got shrimp, the tank won't actually be uncycled however, the levels of chlorine simply aren't high enough and the bacteria simply aren't that wimpy.
  29. Garuf

Possible causes of cherry shrimp deaths

All of the things mentioned are possible causes. Another possible one is shrimp come from waters very low in bacterial growth, almost sterile, a tank is like a hospital ward and infections are highly likely.

Oh eye spy, white sand foreground photo of the shrimps, fully planted substrate photo? I sense a rescape! Tank looks great, good luck, like I say, when a animal is so adaptable many people will offer information claiming it to be optimal so it's something I'm not at all surprised by.

    Breeding Amano Shrimp

Because that's how they're evolved to breed? Not enough suitable food for the zoe stage of their life so allow them to float down into the brakish/marine environments where there's lots of food and then migrate back into fresh water. It's something I want to try but I'm not at all okay with...

No, no, I meant that the 30% a day water change was under the assumption that the tank is a highlight, I should have been clearer.
  45. Garuf

    Tmc micro habitat

I think that's on the assumption that it's a high light tank, as tom mentions in the thread, that if you don't want to do water changes then the tank is going to be vastly different to if you want it to look good. It's a case of picking your poison, or as usual, highlight or low.

    Tmc micro habitat

That's an interesting point, luis, I'd never considered that, this would surely suggest shrimps are high co2, rivine, type animals and as such would need elevated levles of o2? If that's the case i'd bet my bottom dollar a lot of deaths could well be o2 starvation.

    New Shrimp Strains (LondonDragon Look)

Who knows, painted sort of means that it's exactly that, painted. If it's anything like the practice in painting fish then it's a disgusting, vile & reprehensible practice and should never be practiced. And no, if they're painted then the offspring wouldn't be the same.

    Amano behaviour?

I had one but there was nothing out of the unusual. Too weird for me though, it's so hard to track issues like that because the kits are either impossible to get or so inaccurate you can't get a good idea of the problems.
  59. Garuf

    Amano behaviour?

Hmm, I had this problem once but lost the shrimp before I got to the bottom of it, mine happened after a particularly large water change, I assumed that it was because I'd used hot water that the copper content was very high. micro crabs?

They're supposedly 100% aqautic which is rare for crabs. They're also tiny so I wouldn't be surprised if they stay in the water, the risk of being eaten being pretty high. Here's a link to a breeding report, not the one I originally saw, that was on a thai forum but I can't find the thread...
  61. Garuf

    micro crabs?

Ebay has them, there's also a few shrimp shops that have them. They're reportedly pretty difficult and so far there's only one report of breeding apparently needing high levels of minute foods like phytoplankton.
  62. Garuf

    how were CRS originally bred

They didn't. They're from a wild strain of black bee type shrimp, after a while red ones appeared these then isolated and breed until the recessive gene that caused the red strain came to the fore and they bred "true". Nothing to do with Cherrys. haha
  63. Garuf

    Shrimp and Ferts

In theory no. There's a lot of contention regarding it at the moment, same with liquid carbon but we don't know what else is going on in the tank that could be a possible cause for moralities before pointing the fingers at ferts straight away. I think as long as you adjust them slowly you'd be fine.

Keeping shrimp tanks cool in the summer

Just a thought, but is it not worth just moving the tanks to a room that stays cool? My old house used to be hellish in the summer so my tanks used to get moved onto a back room in my grandparents house which with being below ground level stayed nicely cool.

    Freshwater sponges.

Next to impossible by all accounts, they're filter feeding animals so you'd have to figure out their diet and supply it. The Marine ones can't be taken out of water, and are very easy to kill with the tiniest temperature peak so using a coldwater one in the 28-30 degrees needed for sulawesi...
