Beginning of algaes after doubling light

Hi all Interesting discussion :) @ardjuna : do you have a link to that research paper regarding pH and algae? Just out of interest. And how did you determine that your friend has 15ppm of CO2 in his tank?

    BBA driving me nuts.

Which needle valve and regulator are you using?

Allright, will do that, that's easy anyway with a nano :-)

    Brown algae won't go away

Looks like I completely killed the BGA. The brown algae is still there though ... Moved from 9w to 4,5w, full EI dosing and better CO2. It only grows on the substrate (sand). Maybe it just likes the sand?

Use the Ferropol as a source of trace elements. For KNO3 and KH2PO4 I recommend Easy-Life Fosfo and Nitro but that's my own preference. You can also buy dry salts instead of liquid fertilizers. For dosing I recommend the Estimative Index. Check the EI sticky on this forum for more information.

Ferropol 24 does not contain nitrates nor phosphates, only trace elements. Ferropol seems te be the same product but on weekly basis? Adding trace elements (= micro elements) is a good start but your plants really need NO3, PO4 and carbon (= macro elements) to grow well.

    dark green/blue algae

No, your lighting is fine. Adding more light will only increase the demand for NO3 (which is already problematic due to the BGA) You might want to try a black-out for a few days. First remove as much BGA as possible, then block any lighting source using plastic bags, ... and after 4 days do a...

    Brown algae won't go away

The aquarium just came out of its 4-day black-out. So far so good, no brown algae or BGA to be seen. I've also replaced the ligthing by the IKEA LED lamp and I simply LOVE the shadows it makes. If I ever get a bigger tank I'll definitely go for LED again. I do think that one corner is a bit...

    Brown algae won't go away

It's Dutch (Flemish is a more like a dialect). I'll probably buy the lamp and test it out, seems safer and easier than a bandage. Thanks again for the help all of you.

    Brown algae won't go away

I will. During the last black-out the BGA took quite a beating but was able to recover. Let's see if it survives this one  I've also bought some new glass diffusers and bubble counters. Looking forward to installing it.

    Brown algae won't go away

You are absolutely right, I was wrong with the dimensions. So I guess it's about 10 liters of water (13 liter - plants, sand, ...)? The tank is undergoing it's second black-out, no lighting for 5 days. Hope this will kill the BGA for good.

It's @ 7 hours. That IKEA lamp is 4,5w by the way, half of what I have now.

Ceg any idea if I can use a bandage instead of cheese cloth? *edit* or maybe use this? :D

Hair Algae/No growth - Updated with pics

Just a tip: place the diffuser at the other side, opposite the lily pipe. The bubbles will be pushed down by the current and dissolve better. That's how Mr. Amano does it too by the way.

    Brown algae won't go away

Hi Ceg, It's a 9w fluocompact lamp. I do not have a PAR meter so I won't be able to determine the energy levels. I guess shading is indeed the best option for now. I'm injecting CO2 at 1bps but still adjusting. Almost there though. The flow is pretty good, although I expected more from my...

It's probably a different size then. Mine is more like 10x12x15cm

    Brown algae won't go away

Learned something new today, thanks. So I can assume that 9w is quite a lot for 10-15cm height? Will reducing the lighting duration help?

    Brown algae won't go away

Hi Ceg, you are right. When I did my first black-out, the brown algae was gone too. Now it's slowly growing again (just like the BGA). I'm not 100% sure but the lighting is either 9w or 11w on 10 liter, so about 1w/liter. Here's a picture of the tank. I tilted the lighting a bit backwards to...

    Brown algae won't go away

Hi guys I've had my nano tank (10l / 2.5 gallons) for several months now. It has had its share of algae due to bad CO2 management and filtring: brown algae, staghorn, BGA, thread algae, ... By increasing the CO2 and nutritients and buying a better filter (200L/H) the thread algae and staghorn...

    Easylife Blue Exit

There's no reason to add 50ppl a day, that's just a waste of fertilizers. 30ppm per week should be sufficient (EI ratio).

    Easylife Blue Exit

The site doesn't mention anything. Have you tried contacting them?
  24. GillesF

    Easylife Blue Exit

I've never used it. Although I really like the Easy-Life products I refuse to use such a product. Keeping healthy plants is not about killing algae but creating a good environment for your plants to grow in. In my opinion, such a product cannot produce a healthy environment.

    ?orrible algae problem, advice needed

Yet your plants indicate that your CO2 is bad ;) A drop checker is just an indication, you shouldn't rely on it 100%. If you really want to know if you have good CO2 check the condition of your plants. They will tell you what is wrong. Looking at your plants and learning from them is an...

    ?orrible algae problem, advice needed

Use 2 bulbs instead of 4 and reduce the lighting to 8 hours. The actual amount of light creates such a high demand in nutritients that it becomes impossible keep with it. Light = energy = nutritients to grow. By removing two bulbs, you'll be able to meet the demand. Increase your NO3, PO4 and...

    High Tech Aquarium: Advice Needed

I agree with Burnleygaz Add more NO3 (about 30ppm/week), I also recommend adding it multiple times a week, e.g. 3x 10ppm. It is possible that your plants are short on nitrate at the end of the week. Also point all of your pumps in the same direction, if they point towords eachother they will...

    Diatoms - insufficient filtration?

Ceg, do you happen to have some scientific articles that prove that fertilizers do not cause algae? Or simply experience? I'm just looking for sources to back-up my blog article :)

    Diatoms - insufficient filtration?

Ceg, thanks for the info, I'm definitely using some of this for my blog. Just a quick question: is it always better to have spraybars at the back instead of left or right? I think that my H. Callitrichoides didn't want to grow due to bad flow and not too low light.

    Diatoms - insufficient filtration?

Hi Gargamel Firstly, fertilizers, CO2, lighting, ... do NOT cause algae. Instability and poor plant growth is the cause of algae problems (e.g. too much light compared to your CO2 injection). The EI is just an easy way of adding fertilizers to your plants without doing weekly tests. If you...

    Diatoms - insufficient filtration?

10 hours of 150 watts seem a lot to me (T5) but I'm no expert on lighting, maybe someone else can help you with that. The main importance is to get a good lighting & CO2. Too much light and you won't be able to provide sufficient CO2 --> algae. The reason why good flow is needed is to have a...

    Diatoms - insufficient filtration?

Hi Gargamel how much L/H does each powerhead have? You should aim for 10x the tank volume, in your case that would be 3000L/H. You say you cannot provide enough CO², why do you keep so much light then? Less light = less CO² & fertilizer demand. I'd cope with the CO² first and then the filtration.
