    Congratulations Mark Evans of Tropica!

Thanks chaps. Cheers George. Very soon (next few days) I'll be announcing 2 upcoming events, regarding 2 rather large aquariums. (approx 5000L and the other being approx 10000L) We need hands on help with these projects, and i'll be looking for some major support from you guys. They're...

    Where plants go to die

I'm not sure of all the details, but things will happen for the better. Tropica are passionate beyond belief, and to have a power house like them behind educating stores, this has to be a great combination. Yes mate, true. But from my experience, different plants require different...

    Where plants go to die

A good idea, but unfortunately, it doesn't always work so well. When plants have been transported, these simple changes in temps etc. often put the plants into shock. I've had plants in a hydroponics system and still lost plenty. Oddly enough, it's crypts that fair better when moved around like...

    Where plants go to die

I'm not sure they do. P@H get special order boxes i think. It's a bit more random than specific orders. You can ask at least.

    Where plants go to die

It is a shame to see things like this. Some of the plants can be saved for sure. Be careful which algae's you might be bringing into a new tank though. The pets @ home stores should be changing their act pretty soon. There are plenty of things in the pipeline with regards to their plant...

    ADA setup advice/recommendations

With regards to substrate additives, forget them. A waist of money. I've done setups with and without....There's no difference what so ever. A better investment in my opinion is purigen. marvellous stuff. Powersand isn't needed neither. The Aquasoil is a good choice though. Regarding...

    before i even start

Your plans sound good. Ditch the penac and the PH controller. Run just 2 x 54wt. This is plenty to grow anything. This grown with just 2 x 54wT5...You can see how high they are from the tank, evidence that more light does not mean more growth. 12-weeks by saintly's pics, on Flickr New...

    Detritus

I'd agree with Clive. Slowing things down with light, co2 etc is a good thing. I'd also suggest to 'hoover' at substrate level. It's quite amazing to see how much detritus comes from this level of the tank...even when you think it's clean.
  13. Mark Evans

How much has your equipment setup cost?

I've probably spent £2500 on lighting alone. My current luminaire was £900. I've an ADA solar 1 @ about £450 the list goes on.

How often do you replace your heaters?

If i see my temp go above 24ºc, espeially in summer, i'll water change everyday. to bring it back down. My plants grow so much nicer at lower temps. `room temp is just erfect for me....in any size tank for that matter.

How often do you replace your heaters?

II dont use heaters on any tanks. With no effect on fish. My tanks maintain 23ºc, rising in summer. Sometimes, they'll go down to 19ºc, but the plants do like that.

    Film on water

I've said this couple of times before, but I find gouramis to do a great job on keeping the surface clean. I believe they're surface breathers, and in doing so, somehow help keep the film off the water surface. Whenever I've had them, my water surface has always been spotless. The natural...

    Film on water

I find film is a 'new tank' thing. Until everything stables out, just keep up good 'house keeping' so to speak. I take it off with a plastic beaker daily. After a few weeks, it should go. I've not seen it on my 120cm for about 7 or 8 weeks now.

    Stupid is as stupid does

Re: Stupid is as stupid does(painted black) Hi mate, To get deep blacks, it's best not to put the background directly onto the glass, but put it onto the wall, then try to shield the light falling onto the back. If you dont, you'll get a 'dark grey' instead of black. Black is always tough...

  36. Mark Evans

    Background Alternatives

Backgrounds all depend on what is currently behind the tank. i.e a wall. If your wall is white, or similar, try to move the tank away from the wall as much as possible. This allows the light to fall onto the wall, helping illuminate it. In the past,I've been known to place a blue background...

    metal halide lighting

If your solely using MH then keep the lamp high. I'd suggest using t5 mostly, with an hour (to begin with) of MH. this will allow you greater room for movement, and will also allow you to keep the physical height of the light unit lower.
  38. Mark Evans

    metal halide lighting

150wMH over a 90cm is just fine. I've even run 150w over a 60cm with no problems. Just make sure to suspend the light higher than usual. This over a 60cm
