no i was really silly and didnt get a pic before I cut the whole lot back. It was a pale yellow/white, maybe 4cm across, beautiful. Looked extremely like a chrysanthemum oddly!

been a long time since I updated this! after a long time of having er.. no time, Ive pulled it all apart for a rescape. I didnt have the time to maintain a jungle type affair and it all took over.. the Lotus actually managed to cover the entire tank and flowered! Amazingly. So Im starting...

my co2 is fine clive, I have a yellow drop checker with 10x flow around the tank. I cant fit any more in. I do think the salts laying in the Glosso are having a detrimental effect as well.. and I have ALOT of bba.. which definitely thrives in harder waters. at the end of the day, these tests...
  4. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    From scratch.. pretty much

bba is a funny thing isnt it. George says that it will thrive in hard water, despite co2 levels.. my tap water is about 150mg/l carbonate hardness (calibrated test kit).. which is pretty damn hard I recon. Cut with 50/50 rain water, the tank sits at about 90mg/l.. Ill give it a few weeks on...

    From scratch.. pretty much

black brush continues to be a pain in the rear.. after talking with George for quite some time on MSN, Ive decided to do a 50/50 cut with rain water (I live in a nice clean air area and i refuse to use RO due to its environmental impact). Already things seem to be picking up. The rain water...

Id be quite happy if I never saw them again!!! Nice scape but.. oh my..
  8. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    From scratch.. pretty much

Ive reduced the light in the tank from 160w to a partially shaded out 130ish watts.. Im struggling to add enough ferts to stave off deficiencies in the H. Polysperma as it reaches the surface!! Now the tanks quite settled in, I dont mind slowing it down. Pics soon... Ive added some...

I find it goes red if its low in Potasium.. and gets very veiny if its lacking in Nitrates or Phospates.
  10. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    From scratch.. pretty much

perminantly. :) I have pretty high light, so that seems to be its level... I tend to just watch the plants and respond to them if theyre showing signs.. the H. Polysperma is my main barometer, it goes very red if starving.
  11. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    From scratch.. pretty much

I would do, but its so damn big it would blow everything out of the ground.. so i place it in a corner, and use the length of the tank to reduce the flow. I think its just more a flow issue.. Ive just moved the flippin great Hygro to the other end, and put the LA in the middle.. Itll be...
  12. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    From scratch.. pretty much

I cut that one back by half every week pretty much.. Im only using it as a weed for the time being to provide biomass.. as things settle in Ill replace it with other species.
  13. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    From scratch.. pretty much

cheers :) its getting there.. you wouldnt think with 2300lph Id have flow troubles! but with such a wide tank its not as easy as I thought.. the H. Polysperma in the middle blocks current madly. Hopefully using a spraybar with no end on it will help move nutrients into that end better.. Id...
  14. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    From scratch.. pretty much

Front shot :) just added the bar to take some flow to the back left corner.. I recon thats why things are struggling over that side.
  15. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    From scratch.. pretty much

So.. what are we? 6 weeks in? Made a few changes as you can see, with more coming. The LA in the corner furthest from the camera is struggling, no clue why. Also, the Cabomba is also struggling, mostly due to my Denison barb using it as a salad bar!! Its coming out in a few days to be...

    Liseys 60cm high-tech

hope you feel better soon Lisa. Neck injuries and seatbelt damage are the worst. Dont worry about your tank :) tanks can be recovered, people are more important!

    First Attempt!

have you taken out the hard plumbing? I love hard plumbed tanks :) yeah, quite alot of rock there!! I think youre dead on the right track though!

    Structured Jungle !

    not sure about the Mg (and someone check my maths) 3 3/4 tsp of KN03 = 19g so (19/400)*20 = 0.95g (your dose) 1 1/4 tsp of KH2P04 = 6.78g (6.78/400)*20 = 0.339g (your dose) now.. EI according to nutricalc for your tank (c.86ltr) says. 1.17g NO3 (x3) 0.33g PO4 (x3) so your...

    The Cube

even with a macro setting, a compact or bridge camera often doesnt cope very well. The lens diameters just arent big enough to channel enough light onto the CCD chip which leads to focusing and exposure issues. Also, auto focus systems rely on infrared to judge the distance, so if your pointing...
  20. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    Structured Jungle !

it sounds like a combo of a number of issues. firstly, the filter is cycling, so you have NH4.. secondly, the Aquasoil is also cycling, so again you have NH4, thirdly, no ferts in the water column at all times. (so the plants arent taking up what nutrients there are, thus allowing the aglae a...
  21. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    Structured Jungle !

added to my above post, check your dosing with the nutricalc (in my sig). Are you following full EI?
  22. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    Structured Jungle !

any NH4 in the tank could cause this.. is the AS leeching? is this a totally new filter setup as well? the AS can leech NH4 for a while to start with, but your water changes should reset this. Any time you do a WC you should obviously redose immediately. Id turn the lighting right down...

well I guess its just over 2 weeks in? Something like that. A few changes.. -- took out the spraybar as it was causing too high a flow out of the free outlet. -- Now using half the spraybar with no end on it to direct half the flow behind the H. Polysperma for less disruption. -- Increased...

For reference, the tank on planting up. ok.. here we are just 6 days on. Some new plants thanks to LondonDragon.. just gone in today so still out of shape. Had to replant the cabomba in the back as it had let go of the substrate, so it doesnt look like its grown much! The beast is in...

the output is humongous.. I have it setup so one of the dual outlets flows through a spraybar, and the other is free.. Ive just drilled out the holes in the spraybar to 3mm to cope better and put a few downward facing ones in to keep the water directly under the bar moving, and its evened things...

Iwagumi Shrimp Style - UPDATE: 26.09.08

Okie dokie.. after serious neglect due to lack of time, and a substrate that went totally sour on me cos I was a dork, I decided to totally start over. This has been an expensive operation! Testing the water

what sort of DIY co2 system are you using Egmel? You may encounter issues when trying to use a diffuser disk with a non pressurised system. Diffusers take a serious amount of pressure to push the gas through, normally more than a DIY system will be producing. You run the risk of splitting...

    Big Danne's open top nano

ooooo good thinkin i think that paludariums are really amazing natural progression from 'jungle' or 'nature' tanks. What Id like to try, is growing some terrestrial tropical varieties in a display, as well as some nice aquatic species. I want to build a tank thats something like 80cm deep or...

really love the wood! makes a lovely focal point that leads the eye along the scape :) get looots more plants though.. youll struggle keeping it together with such a low biomass, you then need to decide to do full co2, or no co2, and stick to it though. learn to be very good with your DIY co2...

Lovely Sam :) cant wait to see how that develops! H. Polysperma grows so fast you might as well just prune out all the damaged, dodgy looking foliage. Itll grow back in spades so long as things are right! Looks like you might have had a slight Nitrogen deficiency, H. Poly' is a veracious...

    Jimbooo's 450L / 100G high tech journal

be very careful buying off the shelf sources of ammonia, more often then not they add surficants to the mixture. The easy way to tell (unfortunately you have to buy it first) is to open the bottle, shake it.. if there are bubbles on the surface, then its got soap in it, which is bad.

Ive found theyre the only thing I can rely on :) especially good old Poly. Might keep it in the tank just cos of that, out of all the plants ive tried, its the one that always talks the loudest to me, the hard bit is learning to keep your eyes open.

    40"x20"x18" 235ltr - replant and scape

At last, I think ive discovered my deficiency issue! Thanks to my old favorite fert barrometer, H. Polysperma.
