    Will a blackout kill Staghorn?

    Cheers everyone

    Will a blackout kill Staghorn?

This may seem like a daft question and searching for results gives mixed responses, but will a blackout kill Staghorn algae like other types? Cheers, Neil

    Black Algae?

Thanks for the reply Paul. Its only freshly filled last week so I was kick starting it with water changes and dosing and then reducing both the dosing and water changes as I go until I reach low-tech. I've had no other algae from lighting so far (touch wood) so I think it was purely a case...

    Black Algae?

Reading this again I think you've hit the nail on the head as is does stink of earth. Also I think I may have cured it by moving the in and outflow of my filter (so improving flow) adding the TPN (improving kno3) and doing water changes like you advised.

    Black Algae?

Whatever type it was it's almost gone from what I've been doing, just daily 50% water changes, spot dosing the EC, keeping up with adding TPN+, removing any I see with tweezers and the goby has helped a bit too. I think it was in moss already during the dry start and when I filled it the change...

    Black Algae?

Cheers Brenmuk  It is right next to a window but is underneath it so doesn't get direct sunlight. When I set the tank up I thought it could be an issue like you say but my previous setup (also non CO2) was in direct sunlight in the mornings with no problems. I think once a tank is...

The cheapest way to grow algae for Nerite Snails?

Nice one, thanks Darrel. Just switched the Osmocote for some tomato feed. It'll be good for my stiphodon too.

The cheapest way to grow algae for Nerite Snails?

I could whack in some Osmocote instead as it's still got the ammonia content, just in granule form. Great thinking, cheers Johny

The cheapest way to grow algae for Nerite Snails?

Nerites are extremely fussy and only take algae I've found. I've tried blanched spinach, algae wafers and sushi seaweed and they don't touch it  Have you experience of them going for lettuce?

The cheapest way to grow algae for Nerite Snails?

Hello everyone, This seems to be counter-intuitive and daft but I actually want to grow algae! I want to supplement the diet of the Nerites in my tank with stones coated in fresh algae by farming it and rotating the stones. My original idea was just to put stones in a glass and cane it with a...

    Black Algae?

So here I am in the rather embarrassing situation of the first post of my tank being filled on the 'algae' section  This is the tank in question; http://ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=10577 and here is the specimen in question; Tank specifications - 17 litres. Lighting -...

    Green Water

Sorry about the late reply! Due to the physical size of my tank (only 6" high after taking off the height of substrate) I can't fit one of those internals in even if I did manage to reduce the flow. Still, I've kept looking for a UV and the smallest external I could find was this...

    Green Water

As my tank is only 12 litres this looks to be the smallest I can find; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/500L-H-INTERNAL-5 ... 3534wt_941 (its rated at 500 litres per hour) Would this be too much and just blow my tank away?!

    Green Water

I saw these but wasn't sure wether they'd blast my tank away, its only 12 litres and that filter is rated at 800 l/ph?

    Green Water

It seems that I have been fooled into believing! I suppose on the plus side the fish food has kept it cycled without any inhabitants to provide the ammonia waste. The water seems to be more stable now having fully cycled for some time and changing to different water (bottled water over nasty...

    Green Water

I was cycling using fish food so yep! I looked at using liquid ammonia but I read in a lot of places that the right 'type' of good bacteria take longer to grow by doing this, and that organic matter (e.g. fish food) can be better and prevent mini cycles. Its been about 7 - 8 weeks now though...

    Green Water

I may have to take your advice on this! After my blackout the water cleared a lot but still isn't crystal, so this sounds like it'll do the trick! To the Green Machine!

    Green Water

Thanks alot :D. My first attempt at a tank ever! I think tommorow will be time for a blackout after reading that, see what happens.

    Green Water

Hello everyone! This is my first post on this forum, sadly not with good news as I was after a solution to a slight green water issue... (sorry about the long story in advance, and please say if I'm not making any sense!) My tank has been running for approx. 5 weeks now and has finally decided...
