    DIY Clear Cover - Materials?

I got a 2 ft off-cut from a local glaziers for £1.50. Sold as Polystyrene, but not as you know it! Used for shed windows etc. Easy to cut to exact size by scoring with a sharp (Stanley) knife, prefererably both sides, then it just snaps away. I've rounded corners and allowed for filter pipe...

    An accurate thermometer?

I used to have 2 digital thermometers and they showed a difference of 5 degrees between the them. I bought a cheap mercury type just to give me an idea of temp. Now when I change the water I do it by feel: I pump out and to refill; just get the water about half right from mixer taps and fill...

My new gadget - a surface skimmer

I thought this was the UK Anti-Pompey Society!! From a google search I was given this forum. Damn, I've been misled for the last 2 years! Any grounds there for a claim? I'll see you on UKDS SuperCloley1

would an 40cm tank look stupid on a 60cm long stand?

As Aaron said the visible fittings are on the side not on the top surface. You can get black plastic screw caps to cover any screws from most DIY stores

DIY Project DIY Reactor - pictures, assembly and testing

I'm still with you Ed. When you get it sorted I'll have one. I know what you mean about this time of year and exams. My wife is out most nights moderating Drama at A/AS (something like that, so she tells me) As I've said all along: I'm in no rush.

14 foot Planted Tank ................ is it possible ?????

High tech (ie CO2 injected) and high light will incur lots of maintenance as (generally speaking) plants grow fast and need more attention Low tech would be easier to maintain in a tank of that size.

    Digital Timers

Yep, they're great but if using an eight gang (4+4 parallel) they will render the oposite socket useless and they're easy to overload. I use a few single digi timers and they also block off a socket opposite but have better load capacity.

    heating

2x150w would probably be better as they will kick in and out quicker. If you used the 2x200w you would get higher fluctuations in temp although this would be minimal and not really effect any livestock or plants.

    bubble counter help

Sounds like a check vavle to me too! I got bubble counter and check valve from aquaticmagic and the c/v has a red plunger that acts as a non-return valve. Is this what it looks like? You can see the bubble counter below the c/v

    wave maker

I don't know what circulatory pump you are refering to that gives 3000lph. It depends on the actual directional flow of the unit. Koralias "spread" the flow to a wider degree and hence there is not the whirlpool effect. That is what Ed (and I) refer to as high flow, low velocity. 3000lph in a...

    wave maker

Adds 12.5 lph circulation to your filtration turnover, so yeah, would be good. I'd highly recommend it.

    wave maker

I use a Koralia 1 (1500lph) in a 60ltr and as Ed says it's hight flow, low velocity. The fish I have love the flow and ferts and Co2 are well distributed!

DIY Project DIY Reactor - pictures, assembly and testing

I've got to get a conservatory built to house some existing furnature from the living and then get the new tank into the living room without the wife noticing. She loves the tanks when setup, but hates to see me working at them! No rush for me or the wife. If you could send 10mm at a time she...

DIY Project DIY Reactor - pictures, assembly and testing

Yep agreed, makes sense to allow the bubbles to rise against the flow and disolve there, without any mass to interfere with the inevitable consequences. I too am happy without balls

Looking really good Ed, I love the journal style documentary of progress. I may need you to post mine as I can't find any time in the next few weeks that I'd be able to collect, shame that as It'd be great to meet you. I'm looking at getting a new external filter to run this on in the next...

    tweesers

No wanting to argue, but I don't have aproblem with them. I've used them nearly every day for the last two weeks. (I'm trying to plant lots of plants in 3-5mm gravel including glosso, so until these plants get down and rooted they get replanted) I'm sure there is better quality available and...

I recently bought a cheap pair, curved, but thats my preference: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0262091675 I'm very happy with them but maybe I was lucky. I wouldn't take anything away from Aqua Essentials, they provide good quality products and the service is second to none. I...

    What should I upgrade first

Yes 125 ltrs gross though, by the time you allow for substrate, hardscape and hardware you probably have 10x turnover. Having said that, it's not just turnover but flow that's the important part. You need to get the nutrients (ferts) and CO2 flowing around the tank so that all of the plants...

DIY Project DIY Water Changer, No more buckets!!

Re: My Water Changer HI Egmel, All you have to do is unscrew the shower head from the hose and fit this instead! See page 7 0f this thread by Wilis (I adapted [nicked] his idea. Most plumbing merchants should be able to supply you the part. I'm not a plumber so just printed the picture and...

    Ladies Tights.....

Easy peaches, not used to that kind of talk on here  Are you thinking of stockings (and suspenders too)?? A bit like belt and braces? Now the image has gone from my mind! :( Pheeeew, and concetrate again.

Tank alterations, how to cut and remove of some of the glass

I don't know the set-up, but I assume the glass lid part that you're referring to is fixed? Can this be removed at all? If it can than any glazer should be able to adapt it. Or, aletrnatively, change it for perspex and you can cut this or file it away to what ever shape you want! If it's...

    Another DIY reactor.

I wasn't critisising, just thought it would have made sense that way round. I've never tried it so "hats off to you" Why did it leak anyway? Are you going to do change the adhesive? I shouldn't think it's the set-up that made it leak!

    Anyone want a DIY Reactor?

They've gone mad!, excellent idea. I'm happy to pay over the cost for a ready built reactor like this (although I don't want the first untried, untested, unwatertight prototype). I'm [quietly] excited about the whole idea and this will spur me on to get the upgrade on my tank. I'm happy for...

    Anyone want a DIY Reactor?

Sounds good to me Ed, I'll put my name down for one straight away. As I mentioned earlier it's for a future tank and I don't know what external filter I'll have so I don't know the dimensions of the pipework. Probably an Eheim as I've read great reviews on them, Do they have standard size...

    Another DIY reactor.

Please excuse my ignorance, but why do you not have the CO2 line going in on the vertical of the elbow, instead of the horizontal? Where I've put the red blob! I would have thought that this would would give the CO2 bubbles a chance of rising against the water flow instead of being forced...

    Anyone want a DIY Reactor?

Well Ed, not too many people snapping your arm off! I'm still up for it and would have some off you if you find this a viable option. I could even come and collect as I'm only half an hour away (if your the right side of Nottingham) and enjoy driving. Just read your profile and very pleased...

Re: My Water Changer No plumber required: I'll try this again, just typed it all out and system went down! I've just sourced a shower head converter from plumbcentre £3.50 (as above) the piece inside the hose is a smooth outlet pipe in brass and I had to soften the hosepipe in boiling water...

I've got 2 digital therometres and there is 7 degrees between them!! I don't know why I've just bought new batteries for one of them as the old glass/mercury type is the only one that shows a true reading. When I bouh]ght it I looked at about 5 in the shop and went for the one with the mean...
