I can vouch for that, he's a really nice interesting guy. Check out his YouTube channel there's some really cool videos on there of his tanks and where he's doing his research.
I think you're spot on about the delivery Steve. I've used Java Plants about 4 or 5 times over the last couple of years and thankfully I've had nothing but great service from them, good quality plants and delivered inline with the policy stated on the website. As long as you order by 4pm on I...
Re: packing it in
I agree with the other guys Paul, definately don't give up mate. This hobby has a fantastic learning curve, and even the problems we face from time to time are interesting to sort out, and will stand you in good stead for the future. Start again from scratch if you have to and...
Re-filling the tank in the living room with a hosepipe connected to the kitchen tap, went on this forum on the PC in the office, totally forgot about the hosepipe until my kids went in the living room and screamed in horror, because the water was flowing nicely over the edge of the tank :oops...
You could try Akadama, JamesC did a good thread on it here http://ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=741, I've used it in my small shrimp tank, and the plants seem to like it :D And here's a link on ebay for FE's if you're a bit pushed on the money front...
Tropica and Aquafleur are indeed very good plants, but I've also used http://www.java-plants.com/ and http://plantsalive.co.uk/ over the last year or so and have been very pleased with every order, also the Sale/Swap/Wanted section on here is a good place to ask for cuttings
I must admit a while ago I did not like Iwagumi's, but since being back into the hobby big time, I now appreciate a good setup in whatever form it takes, cos I understand more and more the effort that's been put into it :D
Thats a great idea. I subscribe to the Money Saving Expert newsletter, which I receive each week and it lists all the best bits from the web site. It's just nice to be kept informed when I can't look at that forum very often :D Quite often there is one or two bits in the newsletter I would...
Actually George my LFS has book one for £24-95, they have only ever had the one copy and it's been there ages. If it's still there come payday its mine I tell you all mine
From what I understand from other posts on this forum, in a normally central heated house a heater is not required in a nano 8) So I don't think you're plant and/or shrimp choice would be limited at all :D
The standard light that comes with it is fine, you have 2.5 watts per gallon (wpg) which is great for that tank. 11w light fitting divided by 4.399 gallons(20 litres) = 2.5 wpg :D You definately don't need to upgrade the lighting. Looks great by the way, I am thinking of something like the...
I setup a low tech shrimp tank last year, only a 30 litre tank. Started with about 10 Red Cherry Shrimp, but my god i could'nt believe how rapidly the population grows
Fascinating little critters to watch, very playful :)
Definately a good idea for a spare tank  Just make...
All these comments are great if you've got the knowledge and experience to know if things are not right, but test kits can provide a valuable insight to conditions in your tank when you are starting out. But i do agree that after a while you could scale down their use if you feel...
http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk is a good place to buy the kits from, or anything else for that matter. The Nutrafin liquid test kits are pretty good. To start with i would certainly buy a Hardness(GH/KH), pH, Nitrate, and Nitrite test kits. These are the essential ones to start with...
I'm just starting an EI dosing program on my Rio 180 using dry ferts, so i shall be doing a rather large water change every week. Normally i change probably about 15-20% per week at the moment, by using a gravel cleaner with a hose and fill a bucket a few times, and then add treated water with a...
