Algae IS taking over and I'm at the end of my knowledge

Both of the above are opposite, if you have NO2 in your tank then it's shows that it doesn't have sufficient bacteria to complete the nitrogen cycle. Just because it was cycled before, doesn't mean the bacteria colony can be killed/upset and you'd have to cycle again. NO2 will be produced from...

Algae IS taking over and I'm at the end of my knowledge

How are you measuring the co2? Brush algae shows that there's something wrong with your co2. You need to make sure it's 30ppm and flow us good. The blue-green algae is the worst to get rid of, I had it once after not maintaining the tank sufficiently enough. I had to do a 3 day black out as it...

Algae IS taking over and I'm at the end of my knowledge

I would suggest that you concentrate on fertilisers and co2 within your tank. Algae is there because you're not providing sufficient co2 and/or ferts in certain areas of your tank. As in your OP you didn't mention any co2 or fertilisers, then I would assume that it's not on your top priority...

    fighting blue green algae

I managed to get some off ebay as the usual UK stores like TGM didn't seem to stock it. I'm still waiting for it to be delivered as it can take 10-15 days from Hong Kong but it'll be worth the wait.

Best thing if you're worried about overdosing is to get a syringe, turn off the filter, get the normal dose and squirt it onto the effected area (spot dosing). Leave the filter off for a while and then it should take affect. Then turn the filter back on. That way you can increase the contact...

    Aquasoil Powder increases Diatoms?

Re: Low Lght + Aquasoil Powder = Diatoms? They've responded saying that it wasn't low light, their mistake but... Does that mean it releases more silicates over time due to the increased surface area?

    Aquasoil Powder increases Diatoms?

Sorry if this is obvious but... Why would someone say that in my nano (11w over 14 litres) has "low light" and combine that with aquasoil powder, and that it... :?:

    new tank algae problem

I'd take it down to 24w until the algae is sorted. Remove as much algae as possible and use the EasyCarbo to spot dose. When I started my tank I dosed straight away, just to be safe. If you're going down the ADA route then that supplies the correct ferts at the right time. Although I just added...

    new tank algae problem

4wpg is way too much as the start of a tank and to someone who's new to planted tanks. TBH, you've gone way OTT on the light and forgetting the basics of getting the balance right of flow, ferts, co2 and light. I did this and took me ages to get everything back in line. I only made the...

    new tank algae problem

It's your lights that are causing the problem: 72W over 100 litres?! You're fueling the fire loads and not dosing the amount of ferts and co2 required for that amount of light. EDIT: In addition, if you say "heavily planted" then you don't have enough flow, I'm not sure a K-nano will do it...

Algae: What wrong in my tank?

I made the mistake of pimping up my tank thinking that the neon lighting max-power is the same as stupidly high light levels in a planted tank. Neither look good in the long run! Cut the light, then slowly work up. It's all about getting the balance of light, flow, ferts & co2. Lowering the...

Added pressurised CO2 now have increased algae?

I'm finding the same, I recently re-introduced my drop checker in my nano and realised that my co2 wasn't as good as I'd like it. Therefore, I've increased it, I've found that plant growth has improved but there are areas of algae due to me not increasing my TPN+ dosing. I've increased it to...

Insufficent water flow creates algae issue

I had the same, mainly BBA on the plants that were in direct flow from the output. I believe that the high velocity of the water going over the leafs of those plants is so high that the contact time with the required nutrients is not long enough for the plant to absorb. Therefore, the plant will...

    Green Water

I had green water a while ago, I tried a few blackouts only for it to return after a few days. Investing in a UV filter was the best option, left it running for a week or so and the green water never returned. Make sure that you address the cause of the intial green water at the same time too.
  18. Superman

    Black Bushy Algae

Sounds like BBA, you need to improve your co2 addition into the tank. It would be best that in the future you don't introduce algae into the tank knowingly.

    Green Hair Algae on Gravel

Wow, I didn't expect two pages of posts to read on this! I know that flyfisherman has had problems but I believe that the principles of EI is not the problem - the problem was me! The algae grew when I only had a koralia (spel) nano and now have added a #1 to the tank now to increase flow and...

    Green Hair Algae on Gravel

So, I've got annoying green hair algae on my gravel in my 180ltr tank. It's neither increasing or dying and want to find out how to remove it. I've work out my problems (low plant mass, circulation & poor co2) and addressed them.

    Staghorn Algae

The only advice I can find is to - reduce lighting. - dose excel/easycarbo to help co2 and kill algae. - remove infected leaves. I think I'll lover the lighting for a bit and remove what I can.

    Staghorn Algae

I'm getting staghorn algae on old leaves and leaves directly in the flow of the spray bar outlet. I've removed as much as I can from the leaves but it keeps coming back in the same place, leading me to believe that the plant is leeching something to feed the algae. Therefore, the only...

Algae questions and any other advice....

The types of algae you described Green Spot Algae and Black-Beard Algae are related to poor ferts and co2 levels. Just because the fish are happy doesn't mean there's enough co2 in your aquarium. Get a drop checker and use 4dkh solution in it rather than tank water. Your photo period seems...

    Thread Algae

I might be wrong, only an idea... There must be a point at which the ferts and co2 is going so quickly over the leaf that the contact time with the cells in the leaf is so small that it hinders growth? I have algae on plants and wood only where there is the highest flow. I think the algae is...

    new tank problems.

Oh didnt notice you were adding ammonia to your tank to cycle it, stop that now! Best to do a water change to remove as much as possible as the rule of thumb is Light + Ammonia = Algae. In planted tanks you don't an ammonia to cycle the tank. It'll mature just using the plants.

Low tech to High tech = more algae

I don't understand why you'd wait for Nitrate to drop to 10ppm before dosing again. You'll never know if any of the other nutrients from TPN+ have been used up? Just keep dosing to the schedule, each day, how ever much mls. If you don't have enough ferts in there algae will come back. Oh, and...

    white cloudy water

White cloudy water could also be a bacterial bloom. As you said it was a bad idea to change the sponges in your mature filter. Given that, it's prob a bacterial bloom and will clear on it's own. Green water is a type of algae and can only be cured by water changes and a blackout, this does...

  35. Superman

    Green film on the surface

Green surface algae shows that you have poor circulation and poor co2. What water are you using in the drop checker? Is it 4dkh? Use paper towels to remove it, put one down and then another half covering as you'll need to catch the film between the two.

Getting algae after starting EI dosing, what to do?

When you have an algae infested tank, the best thing to do is remove any effected leaves as soon as you spot it and also by then performing a few water changes. I've got one of those and bought it to tackle my green water problems that kept coming back even with blackouts. Its a bit piece of kit and beware the cable was short to get it hooked up to the plug. It helped water clarity improve quickly but did disrupt the water flow in my tank and so the...

I had loads of dead plant matter hiding all over the place and the wafting and then siphoning certainly helps. On the side of the ferts, recently I've been overdosing from what the maths tells us on the calculators. As Clive has pointed out, flow means that the concentration of everything...

Right blackout over. Opened up and the water was clear-ish, so took another photo. As you can see, its still a bit cloudy not crystal clear. I was disappointed with my plants, my P Helferi had just about melted all away. So went out shopping for replacement pots and also bought so Staurogyne...
