Even if you were all it should have done was press down evenly. To crack it like you describe it would have to have been forced outward which means it didn't really fit well in the first place.

Should be ok if you put it inline but I can't guarantee it'll fit a reg, you'll have to ask. Would just getting one of these be best? You may be able to win a cheap solenoid off them too here. They are quiet and cool when operating.

European and British refillable cylinders all have threads of 0.860 inches OD and 14 threads per inch. That's very near 22mm. Disposables are smaller although I don't know what size exactly.
