Will Easycarbo directed at a plant kill hair algae??

i turn off the filter, make a 50% solution of liquid carbon and use a syringe to treat the affected areas. But i always remove affected leaves first, then dose the bits i can't remove. Turn filter back on after 5-10 mins and you're done! hope this helps, Matt

    Persistent BGA

good, innit! I couldn't believe the result when i did a blackout! Glad it worked - hope the algae doesn't return! Matt

    Woah green algae!

Re: Woah green algae I made exactly the same mistake. The best analogy i can think of is a car accelerator - you don't want to put your foot to the floor unless the whole system is balanced, as you tend to end up with a greasy unpleasant mess! :D M

    BBA and liquid carbon

That sounds like a good plan. Or can you just skim off the surface layer of substrate and replace it with some new stuff? M

    BBA and liquid carbon

you can see the bba die off almost immediately - it turns pink! M

    Woah green algae!

ah - that's more info! If you're dosing liquid carbon i'd go back to a 5hr photoperiod to stop the lc building up to dangerous levels. Anyone else have thoughts on this? If your diffuser still not here? I'd think about opening a case with ebay - you can always close it again if it arrives but if...

algae knip it in the bud!!!!!

The other thing (apart from lights and ferts) would be to sort your flow. It sounds like you have spraybars on three sides of the tank, which will cause very disruptive flow patterns and help the algae along nicely. If you shift all your spraybars along the full length of the back of the tank...

    errrr encourging algae

If you've got a sponge filter that often provides a rich food source for herbivores as well. I know Darryl (dw1305) runs sponge filters for this very reason! If you want to know about growing algae you can always come look at my tanks... :D Matt

    what am I doing wrong!

That's a lot of light! Overdosed ferts (within sensible limits, obviously!) rarely harm fish, but underdosed tanks cause massive problems for plant health leading to ammonia release which opens the door for algae, and light compunds the problem. I'd drop the light to 6 hours per day and move...

    what am I doing wrong!

I'm no expert (and i'm sure of them will pitch in with some more definitive help!) but it sound like your fert dosing is off to me. You don't mention how long your lights are on for but you have reasonable lighting and supplemental CO2, and as such you NEED to be dosing EI or a comprehensive...

    Grey/White Encrusting stuff?

Hi there! I can't answer your question but your tank looks great - the stems are clearly loving it! Had a look at your eBay ferts and can't decode them! (i'm a bear of very little brain!). If you want to change them for another dry powder a couple of the site sponsors do all-in-one EI powders...

    Green Hair Algae or?

I've looked at algae a fair bit (what, with being rubbish at running my tanks and everything!) and i never realised that - really useful info! Cheers! Matt

Ready To Throw In the Towel

...then have a brew...:D Listen to ceg4048 - he's a real algae guru and helped me no end in sortingout a massive BGA outbreak. nayr88 has summarised things nicely Time for a brew... Matt

Ready To Throw In the Towel

Putting more plants in the aquarium helps because the plants out-compete the algae for nutrients. In your system at present you are providing maximum nutrients with few plants to use them. This means that any algae bloom (once triggered) has a massive amount of "food" to develop and grow. I...

Ready To Throw In the Towel

We've all been there mate! As nayr88 says check out the journals and you'll see that EVERYONE gets algae probs at some point! I'm no expert (hopefully one of the cleverer people will pick this up) but his would be my stepwise management plan to sort out the probs 1) Sit down, have a brew/beer...

    Blue Green Algae new kno3

A blackout isn't as bad as it sounds - all plants and livestock will be fine! I did this and (in combination with better dosing) it wordked a treat and has never recurred cheers Matt

    Diatoms, again.

I agree - it IS a LOVELY spray bar    Glad you like it mate - finally forced me to make one for my tank! I'd forgotten how easy they are to build. Can't believe more suppliers don't supply them as standard (are you listening Eheim!?!?!?!?!?!??) Cheers! Matt

    Algae VS H.C.

yeast co2 could also be the culprit! BBA tends to be a product of inconsistent co2 delivery so when you say stable how do you mean? Are you checking gas delivery to the substrate with a drop checker as this could reveal the problem! Hope this helps, Matt

BGA - Increase nitrates - how much??

Ooops  Forgot to mmention - run an airpump/stone as well! M

BGA - Increase nitrates - how much??

You shouldn't be "stuck" with liquid carbon and ferts! If your BGA keeps recurring try changing other things (for example significantly dropping you photoperiod) It might also be the case that your blackout wasn't "total" enough as they must work by definition (due to the structure of the...

BGA - Increase nitrates - how much??

I'm sure CLive (ceg4048) will let you know the numbers. I had an outbreak of this and a three day blackout was the only way to rid the tank of it completely. Livestock were fine but the tank has to be COMPLETELY blacked out for 72 hour for it to work, and this is generally accepted as the...

    Elodea to help stop BGA

Quick update - Cut my lights to 2 hours on an evening (just for tank viewing really), upped my TPN+ to 5ml/day and plant growth took off! Just added CO2 a couple of days ago (and upped lighting appropriately!) so i'm sure i'll get some more probs, but jsut thought i'd let everyone know that...

    BGA in Low tech tank

    Elodea to help stop BGA

And i've just uncovered my tank from its 72hr blackout and the BGA is completely gone! Amazing - it's like witchcraft! And my livestock seem none the worse for it which is far, far more important than any silly algae. Planted a patch of Elodea and another plant (which i'll get round to...

    Elodea to help stop BGA

Stunning explanation of a point that i'm gradually getting ceg! Having read through your EI tutorial last night i'm going to move from TPN+ to EI dosing as soon as i can get the funds together, and pressurised co2 is on the way next month - big whoop! I guess if i dose with the max. uptake...

    Elodea to help stop BGA

Ajm200 - I believe Elodea is fine at tropical temps (had no probs with it in my other tank at 24c!) Ceg4048 - Thanks for confirming my thoughts! Think i might plant up a patch to hide my filter tubing, give a bolder green accent against the rotalia, stabilise the tank chemistry and, perhaps...

    Elodea to help stop BGA

Hey all, I've been struck down with the dreaded BGA! I'm midway through a 72hr complete blackout to hopefully break the back of it, but having read this article http://www.aquariumalgae.blogspot.com/ I'm thinking about adding some elodea to my tank. Does anyone have any experence/further...

my algae on rocks are pearling??!!

Sounds like BGA - i've just had an outbreak! Sad news is you need a 72hr total blackout to fix it. Look at BGA threads - you'll find plenty of info! Good luck fixing it! Matt

Black hairs in my vallis and crypt

Hi Ethan, I'm sure one of the experts will pick this up but it sounds like you got yourself some Bottle Brush Algae (BBA). Have a search on the forums and you'll find loads of info. My gut instinct is that you don't need to dose the TPN+. Pplanted tanks are a balance between the plant...
