Journal An 'arium of some kind.

Hi all, The males are homicidal to one another from a young age. That is one of the problems with breeding them, you need a lot of space to store the "spare" males in. Cheers Darrel

    Journal My First Terrarium

Hi all, You need another home office to actually do some work in, because that one is going to be much too distracting. Why not go the whole hog and have some <"leaf cutter ants as well?">. cheers Darrel

    Journal My First Terrarium

Hi all, Germany might have been a better option, but I'm not sure post-BREXIT. I'll be in Wales next month, I'll have a look out for it if I go anywhere suitable. cheers Darrel

    Journal My First Terrarium

Hi all, It is a UK native moss. I've never seen it locally, and it is generally fairly uncommon in SE England, but a member in Wales or Scotland (or Norfolk Broads/Brecks or Poole Harbour area) should be able to find some. <"It is really distinctive">, so you wouldn't need to be a moss...

    Journal My First Terrarium

Hi all, Possibly <"Climacium dendroides">? There are a few mosses that are quite tree like, including <"Thamnobryum alopecurum"> and <"Thuidium tamariscinum">, which is really common in NW Europe. The moss you have looks like a <"Leucobryum sp."> cheers Darrel

    Journal My First Terrarium

Hi all, This going to be so good. I'm seeing a business opportunity <"for some-one">. "LondonDragon" already sounds like celebrity endorsement. Very nice, you'll need to make sure that the roots aren't wet all the time, particularly the Schoenorchis scolopendria. Is it mounted on a cork board...

    Journal My First Terrarium

Hi all, If you have a park to hand? A handful of leaf litter from under some shrubs etc will provide a starter culture for free. Yes they stay put where it is damp. They don't have an exoskeleton, so have a very limited life span in your house cheers Darrel

    Splash tetra paludarium

Hi all, The Cyperus is good, but your <"Platycerium bifurcatum is fantastic"> the growth rate is unreal, I've got fern envy. I'm going to cc. in @foxfish so he can tell us how his is doing in the <"tropics of Guernsey?"> cheers Darrel

    Nano Paludarium Attempt!

Hi all, You could use <"expanding foam">, but you could also just use wood or bark. Have a look at @foxfish's posts, <"he is full of good ideas">. cheers Darrel

    Paludarium In the making.

Hi all, I'll post some of your <"Bonsai images">, they are pretty stunning plants. The degree of hairiness is a good indicator, all the grey tomentose ones like to dry out between waterings and are drought tolerant, they don't tend to have a central "vase". If you can find ones with a very shiny...

    Ideal photoperiod for pallidarium?

Hi all, The top bowl has native plants, the dark green hairy leaf is a Water Forget-me-not (probably Myosotis scorpiodes, but you can't tell which one from the photo), the flowering plant is "Opposite Leaved Golden Saxifrage" (Chrysosplenium oppositifolium) and the brown leaved one is either a...

    Ideal photoperiod for pallidarium?

Hi all, I would. I'd give 12 hours a go. cheers Darrel

    Splash tetra paludarium

Hi all, I've kept them a couple of times, but it has <"always ended in disaster">, and they've never lived out their potential life-span. The last time I had them <"I raised a few"> and they grow really quickly, which suggests they probably aren't very long-lived. cheers Darrel

    Splash tetra paludarium

Hi all, Certainly does. May mean that the water will be a bit hard for Chocolate Gourami. I love these, mine did really well for a while but I've ended up with no males again.I was given three more, but they've turned out to be a single <"Copella nigrofasciata">, and two <"Pyrrhulina...

    Pest Vivarium Moss

Hi all, Looks like it might be Amblystegium serpens. I think the moss offered for sale as "Stringy Moss" or Leptodictyum riparium is often Amblystegium serpens. Have a look here: <http://www.flowgrow.de/db/aquaticplants/amblystegium-serpens> &...

    Vivarium/Reptile Lighting

Hi all, I'm pretty sure you could use a combination of a 6500K tube, and any fluorescent tubes with an actinic component. I run a moth trap and that has this actinic black light/6500K combination in it (insects see UV, but I've found I get more moths with a visible light, rather than 2 black...

    WOW, amazing terrarium

Hi all, I'm having a visit next month with our students, happy days. The Banana flower is great and I really like the Myrmecodia, they are one of my favourite plants. These are Vanda type orchids, you some times see them for sale in garden centres etc. I haven't tried it yet, but if you wedge...

    Desert Plants?

Hi all, Most Echeverias or some of the non-spiky Aloes, nearly all the Livingstone "Daisies" Lampranthus etc. (Lithops etc are a bit tricky ), Orbea variegata, Cereopegia woodii etc, Sedum spp. plenty of these - S. morganianum perhaps? Crassula ovata or multicava, or any of the C. pyramidalis...

    Question for the Frog Keepers?

Hi all, I don't keep them, but I used to have a colleague who was a keen tree frog breeder. Have a look at http://brianstropicals.com/building.html, the owner (in the USA) is a University micro-biology lecturer, and it is full of some very useful information. This is another German site with...
