yeah I considered a pi but in the end I went for an arduino as i wanted to do it more of an embedded solution rather than computer based solution. if i'd gone for the pi I may as well have just chucked an old £5 android smartphone in as the processor+interface with a usb breakout cable on it.
I've been working on a tank controller for about 8 months now based on arduino measuring tds/ph/temp (at multiple points)/flow rate through pipe work at multiple points and also a lighting controller.
Idea being that I'd make it all easily controllable via a little 5 inch touch screen colour...
get a custom made jobbie it'll be alot cheaper than an off the shelf (assuming you have a stand etc already)
have a chat with Jez at posidons palace he has some good prices and does good stuffs
as long as its not much deeper than 12" then 6mm glass should be fine wouldn't want to risk anything taller than that in 6mm though no real safety margin if the brace has come off its probably because the front panel bowed so much under load. thats a worry!
you can get low flow meters that'll measure that no problem
http://www.flowmeterdirectory.com/flowm ... _flow.html
BUT as always there's a catch they're VERY VERY expensive :)
gas flow meter.
set it up correctly on a 10litre tub measure gas flow rate. upscale it by factor of 20 for a 200 litre tank and adjust your gas flow accordingly.

i used normal one coat gloss on the inside of the lid on my 7 footer and when it tried sealed it and the entire thing with a satin yacht varnish leaving it wood coloured on the outside and only painted on the inside (save me having to use massive reflectors
aquarium hk are usually really good with delivery I've ordered many things from him in the past and its always arrived. only thought would be its stopped in customs perhaps
meths (which usually contains IPA anyway) is just fine pure ipa is much much much more expensive not to mention considerably harder to aquire
meths should never leave any trace or residue behind other than perhaps a few fibres from the cloth you used to wipe it with :) and they can be resolved...
use meths to clean the glass not white spirits. white spirits is oil based and water proof at that it is a swine to get completely out of the glass/silicone and is massively toxic.
meths on the otherhand is a stronger solvent and evaporates off completely :)
Re: DIY ADA stand, which paint??
if you wanna prep the primer first you're better off using a very very fine wet and dry and then kitchen roll + meths to clear the dust off after treat it almost as if you were spraying a car panel.
personally i'd strip the entire tank down and redo the whole lot but this isn't without its risks further.
you could do a half and half strip out the broken panel and all silicone around it but do not touch the silicone between the other panels. then strip off the internal bead of silicone...
you couldn't do it with the tank being full you'd have to completely drain down and empty.
for starters getting silicone off is a bi*ch, second as you're tidying it up you'll get lots of little bits every where you don't want it getting stuck in water column or worse being eaten by fishies etc...
assuming the silicone between the glass is bubble free removing the internal silicone won't risk leaks. you will loose some of the strength but on 12mm glass there should be more than enough between the panes to keep it nice and secure.
best bet is to do it and then fill it outside to check for...
Re: DIY ADA stand, which paint??
as long as you've got a primer pretty much anything will do :)
wouldn't really recommend matt though for a stand as water marks / streaks will be a horrible. go with a gloss or if you have to use matt use acrylic matt varnish ontop of the undercoat it comes in...
Re: DIY ADA stand, which paint??
depends what wood you've made it out of.
mdf usually needs a primer for example and you can get an edge sanding sealant to stop it from going fluffy on the corners where you're sanding.
hah next time I build a tank I'll try to get the missus to video it for me it'll be a dodgy camera phone video though as I don't actually have a proper video camera.
as for scapes I don't have any up at the moment really just a cutting growing tank i'm in the middle of decorating/rebuilding...
think i've made about 10 now so not many and far from perfect I still spend a stupid amount of time cleaning up silicone cos i've slipped up or messed up etc but certainly getting better.
I don't use any clamps etc just use tape to hold everything in place but you can use joiners 90 degree...
to put it in perspective glass for a 1000x500x500 will be about £80 and 2 tubes of silicone £10.
I get the glass unpolished/beveled. I use a sanding block with some fine paper on it (or wet and dry if I have some handy) to smooth off the sharpness of the join seams then a dremmel with a mini...
I've always put all pieces ontop of the base using blocks and tape to keep it all together. When I build tanks too I push the pieces quite tightly together squishing most of the silicone out and then i trim up the rest the result is an ada style "silicone free" tank. However alot of other...
Re: Goldfish tank oportunity
its a guy fairly local to me, been around for ages lots of people have used him and he's highly recommended by all that have used him so should be good.

btw goldfish in a 30l tank? massively too small for the type of fish thats like putting a "common" plec in a 30l and saying it'll be good enough for it :(
you could reduce it but I wouldn't recommend it. it would negate the point of using fx5's (the primary reason being their flow rate since media wise they hold less than other externals!).
Reducing your pipework down to 16mm will seriously reduce the flowrate closest I could think would be the...
something like this will do it
http://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aquar ... 0-l-h.html
just push a hose pipe over the outlet (since its round not square like some other powerheads)
small pond pump or a power head hooked to a hose will work fine :) failing that hose directly onto the tap mains pressure will cover any distance no problems
theoretically sure what effect the lowering of current will have on the motor is anyones guess.
i read about someone (sure it was on here) using abit of plastic bottle to block off half of the back of the powerhead to stop effectively half the flow rate
I think that shoaling is due to the similar shape and similar dark line down the side since the barbs like to be in groups of 8-10 ideally but if they don't have sufficient numbers of their own kind they join with others.
I only have 5 but they're currently on holiday in a friends tank until I...
they'll grow into the 15cm-20cm range and they like lots of space to swim in 300 is really the smallest tank i'd consider putting them in especially in larger groups. from their current size though you have a good while yet before they're "too big" but just bear it in mind
bandsaws and recips will do it too :) as will a good old hacksaw if you're lacking power tools :)
use a fine a toothed blade as you can possibly find for a cleaner cut. larger teeth blades can make a mess on first cut but will be fine once moving
jigsaws or circular saws both cut perspex just fine trick is to move it fast and cut it with the plastic protection on then just use wet and dry on the edges to smooth them out again
i wouldn't recommend leaving any water in it and make sure your full length bars and cross braces are quite thick glass and put the plastic rim back on after siliconing on the new bits of glass too as it'll help it keep its shape until the silicone has set (24 hours or more)
make sure you use...
6mm glass on the rio 180 which for the volume of the tank is quite excessive so there should be minimal bowing if you take the brace bar out.
if you're not willing to risk it why not get some glass cut to either have a glass brace bar front to back and silicone it in yourself or get a full...
do you have to put the hood on ? the 125 is fairly small you could leave it open topped and just get a light bar that sits above it.
failing that i'm sure you'll be able to buy an official juwel one from somewhere which will just push back over the top.
or if you're feeling diy ish get some...
