    Brown Plants

larger water changes weekly rather than 2 weekly higher amounts of ferts and a liquid carbon should sort it. for example that leafy stem in the front left of your last picture I have in my low tech tank and it grows so fast its up and out of the water a week after trimming back (hint this plant...

    Vallisneria - A few questions!

vallis is the ultimate low tech plant it'll grow in anything. I've even got it growin in a 2x1x1 fry tank with no light at all and just gravel for substrate with leafs almost 1m long now :) takes it a few weeks to get rooted/settled then it spreads like a weed

    ID this terrestrial plant/weed

tried that once but only once from reading it seems i need to do it repeatedly :) hopefully it'll kill the conifer hedge there too so I can remove it and put a fence up :)

    ID this terrestrial plant/weed

that looks like it and explains why i can't kill the bloody stuff. guess i'll stick another 20 gallons of weedkiller down again and see what happens

    ID this terrestrial plant/weed

nope none of them I've already trawled the tinterwebs but was kinda hoping someone here with all their planty knowledge may recognise it.

    ID this terrestrial plant/weed

OK I have masses of this weed I assume it is growing in the garden and I can't do anything about it even gallons of weed killer don't seem to bother it. It grows at a rate of inches per day and is driving me nuts (not to mention its burnt out 2 strimmers now!) I know we have some plant boffins...

plants just don't seem to grow/very very slowly

nothing at all since you "reset" your cycle with your water change once a week. plants will use as much as the light/co2 allows any excess will just sit in the column until you water change. if it was me i'd mix my trace in with the macro and dose them all at once. even if you keep them as...

plants just don't seem to grow/very very slowly

dose your ei every single day full amount no days off. assuming your flow and co2 are correct i'll place bets you'll see an improvement within a week

    Leaves melting

emersed leaf die back making way for new aquatic leafs or perhaps too much light or not enough ferts
  13. hinch

    Marine ???

macro algae is the thing but they feed purely on waste from livestock so if you're loading up heavily on the macro and using liverock you'll actually need very little in way of filtration as the bulk of the filtration will actually come from the macro and rock instead. perhaps just a little HOB...

Advice needed for an aquascaping newbie

vallis is probably just dying back while its settling in once it takes root though its a weed. only thing though is it doesn't like liquid carbon
  16. hinch

Looking for a sword type plant...

I have that it takes a while to settle in but once its settled it puts out new leafs pretty quickly from shoot to fullsized leaf in under 24h its pretty awesome. I split mine in half the other week and both halfs seem to be doing good too

    ID this plant please

Just got back from mum's and she's got a new plant for her tank. I'm pretty sure its a non aquatic plant but can any of you ID it for me and give me a definite aquatic or not. Is me by hinchles, on Flickr

    Holey Plants and Snails

yes flow should be fine volume wise but don't have them at opposite ends pointing towards each other as that will create head to head flow and deadspots. move the powerhead to the same side as the outlet and perhaps have it pointing to the middle front of the glass to create a circular flow...

    Holey Plants and Snails

I was going to suggest plec as thats exactly how my munched on leafs look however after going through her introduction post she didn't mention any plecs in the tank so kinda kept my mouth shut :)

Will liquid carbon be good enough for these plants?

if its refillable then look for the brewery/pub supplies OR welding supplies (there's alot of these in your area) both will be able to refill it with pure co2 for you somewhere in the £10 - £20 region
  23. hinch

Will liquid carbon be good enough for these plants?

is it a refillable cylinder? why not just change to an FE if its not? if it is refillable look up brewery supplies they should be able to refill for you. if you're stuck using non refillable cylinders the length of time this post has been up you could have ordered new ones on tinterweb and it...
  24. hinch

Will liquid carbon be good enough for these plants?

if your tank volume is over 200l its cheaper to use co2 than liquid carbon of any description (not the answer to your direct question but possibly useful)

    Plant id

I think number 2 is Hygrophila corymbosa 'Angustifolia' I've got a load of it in one of my tanks, very easy to keep and under high light grows sooooo fast. starts off slow while it gets some roots set down from where the stem was cut but once its roots are down it'll go up by a good couple of...

    Looking worse for wear

think its just a build up of dust and debris from the substrate I have it in my little tank too especially after disturbing the substrate. I tend to vacum the plant leafs as i'm siphoning out the water for the change and it goes away again until I decide to disturb the substrate again
  27. hinch

    Looking worse for wear

lots of regular water changes, wipe the leafs on water change until it stabalises and you can stick some clean up crew in there then just gotta wait for it to settle down
  28. hinch

    Looking worse for wear

what size tank are you using? how heavily planted? stocked with fish if so what/how many? do you have a clean up crew in there to keep stuff clean?

What plants for a large no tech tank

perhaps if heavily planted but its not going to be heavily planted mostly just background plants I want to keep the front end completely empty and open I have considered testing soil in one of my smaller tanks but when working with £100+ fish its too much of a risk to take so I'm going to stick...

What plants for a large no tech tank

I don't really want to go the soil route due to being pleco heavy and some of them are sensitive. so not only do they disturb the substrate like nuts but any dip to acidic will cause some of them to pop their clogs which is an expensive loss. Mark I'm only going to head for mostly stems anyway...

What plants for a large no tech tank

I've got a fair amount of Microsorum pteropus type of java fern and its never been bothered by any of the pleco's they'll suck on it to get algae or scum off it but never eaten the leafs. The albino bristlenose fry have chewed on my vallis in the past taken tips off etc but the stuff grows so...

What plants for a large no tech tank

gigantea is the vallis I've already got loads of I'll be transplanting it from the 200litre tank I like the look of the Limnophila sessiliflora would go well I think mixed in clumps in the vallis. So far I've got a fairly large 1m piece of bogwood am looking for another one or 2 in a similar...

What plants for a large no tech tank

I'm busy planning my new 1000l tank and am trying to decide on plants. The tank will have no co2, no ferts and only a pea gravel substrate (at this size I really can't afford a proper substrate) I'll be taking the plants out of my 200 litre tank which include lots of vallis (straight), some...

    blyxa japonica & easy carbo

yeah i've given up on the blyxa now but my hairgrass seems to have finally taken root and is starting to grow now so i'm happy and my crypts are going a little crazy going to have to split them down again / start trimming so its all good

    Can i cut Vallis?

just keep the runners trimmed if you don't want it to spread with vallis if you cut the leafs down its not so much new leafs (though you will get some) but the old cut ones will just rapidly grow back up to full height I seem to get about an inch of growth a week in a completely low tech tank...
  41. hinch

    Can i cut Vallis?

not needed for vallis. just take some scissors and trim them down I do mine once a month or so in my low tech tank it still grows like a nutter. for the off shoots that spread around the tank just cut through the tendril running from the parent plant to the shoot then you can replant the shoot...

    Pointers On Maintaining Plant Colouration.

I've got some of this stuff in my tank too it starts green and goes red as the leafs get to full size (at least it does in my tank) think it relies on having quite high lighting though
  43. hinch

What is this and how do I trim it?

ok will give that a try tomorrow night when i'm fiddling one of the other plants has taken over and is swamping the hair grass which is finally starting to grow though slowly :( so it needs hacking back. while I've got you here though whats a good carpeting plant to run in a purely low tech...

  45. hinch

What is this and how do I trim it?

It doesn't seem to match anything in the guide to trimming stickied here. Its growing like nuts though so I want to hack off the big leafs and leave just all its new growth there. What is this by hinchles, on Flickr ignore the crypt poking through underneath it :)

    blyxa japonica & easy carbo

no injected co2 in any of the tanks. I did think lighting at first but this isn't the low light tank or the high light tank its the middle light tank its doing fine in the other 2. I've tried doubling up the ei dosing but too soon to tell if its working or not
  47. hinch

    blyxa japonica & easy carbo

aye i'm confused by it thought it was an outside shot but :( can't be lack of ferts because its doing fine in the other 2 tanks purely struggling in the dosed tank

    blyxa japonica & easy carbo

Does blyxa not play well with easy carbo? I just got a load off Alastair on here. I've split it across 3 tanks, 2 are just community tanks pure low-tech no ferts, no carbon, no co2 nothing just lots of pleco's and one tank which is kinda low tech using EI and easy carbo. I was a little...
