consdering how often floss needs changing tbh i'd not put it in the bottom as every week you'll be dismantling the filter it'll drive you nuts. personally i'd put it on the top so i only had to open the filter to replace it rather than lift it all out and what not (the fx5 weighs a tonne when full)
don't let clive see you mentioning upping your lighting he'll start on his more co2 pitch again :)
which btw I don't disagree with. get co2 in get it setup. get a powerhead/wavemaker fitted to give the co2 some nice circulation and start EI dosing your ferts and you'll see growth take off even...
if done right they're silent its only really the overflows which make any noise
yes but if you add co2 into the return pipe(s) then it'll at least be hitting the tank first before going back to the vented sump
if done right there's probably less chance than an external busting a seal the...
you'll be looking at 3 externals or 2x fx5's but you can't really put inline heaters and co2 on the fx5's due to pipe diameter.
on a tank that size you're probably better going sumped
i always remove all the floss from my external filters and use a couple of layers of coarse foam instead don't quite get the same polish some particulates do come through unlike with floss, however also unlike floss I don't need to open the thing up once a week to put new floss in. think I clean...
fill one of the chambers with k1 (usually first chamber after downflow is best) fill 2nd chamber with some polishing wool, chuck some purigen and/or carbon in the return chamber along with a heater and you're good to go. some other people load up with scouring pads instead of k1 as they're like...
this seems to promote an idea I pushed a few months ago in another thread, its perfectly possible to have a filterles tank and still have adequate "filtration" with the correct plant biomass and substrate. the filter its self if added becomes not a biological filtration function but instead...
look at the x-aqua or there's a cheaper equivilent overflows and returns. They're designed for the marine world but no reason they shouldn't be usable for freshwater too (this is something i'm considering on one of the littler tanks too)
11.8 litres per hour so you're looking at about 4.5-5 hours to refill your tank after change from a 75gpd ro unit. however you may get less than 75 gpd through the system if you're unput pressure is quite low you may need a booster input pump.
output will always be dependant on input pressure...
Does anyone know anywhere in the UK that stocks these they're a Hagen filter however I cannot find them for the life of me for sale in the UK.
I'm putting together a pico reef tank and want one for a fuge :)
just the single one its the smallest one they do Eheim Aquaball 45 using the spray bar not the venturi head.
It really does create a proper movement around the tank I have it on the side pointing full length of the tank and the fish struggle to swim in the area where it hits the opposite side of...
the 2nd ones are the resun/sunsun pumps resold in the uk under the allpondsolutions brand (don't know about in yankee land since both sites were american I assume you're from there)
they can be found cheaper than you listed above on ebay in higher flow rates than the one you listed. spares are...
Re: HMA filters
work similar to ro filters (bolt into water supply) work abit faster only remove heavy metals iirc standard carbon block ones just remove disolved metals + chlorine however some now also have the ability to add an additional chloramine block to them which will remove those too...
too much flow perhaps not allowing it to settle into the substrate so when you vac it because its in the water column and not settled you can't vac it out?
wild guess work I have no idea though tbh usually floss pads clear it all out (even though I have a pet hate for floss pads)
fixed it the old rubber orings inside the connectors on the head had disintegrated having been sat for so long a 2 quid set of o-rings later and they're both sorted and leak free again now :)
also wasn't leaking from pipe side it was leaking from head side but solved anyway now :)
the seal ring screw bit on the taps is for some reason I can't quite comprehend open behind the screw thread so you have the screw thread goes on and secures the taps to the connector fine that bits water tight but because its open behind the threads to where the actual tap fits inside the...
ok so filters cleaned up and new piping installed filled them up for a test run and all 4 bloody taps are leaking (2 on each filter)
Any suggestions for sealing tips I've attempted vaseline around the threads but it appears to be leaking from behind the threads
good to know just finished cleaning the filters out they've been in storage like 2 years i think filthy :)
its a shame I can't have this as a big planted tank as it'd be cool but unfortunately the type of fish going in it make short work of any plants in there :(
I've just dug my old 7 footer out of storage ready to get it setup and I have 2x aqua one aquis 1200 external filters with it. Only problem is I can't find the pipes or the manuals for them so I need some new clear pipe.
Anyone know what size pipe I need for starters internal/external I'm...
going to be freshwater so should be ok i hope only thing I've noticed really is most pond pumps spit out 22mm pipework so how to get that upto a spraybar will be interesting. going to have to custom make the spraybar its self not sure how to deal with the up and over part though without using...
i suggested the tetratec one becuase I know how quiet they are and they're cheaper than the jbl and eheim ones for pretty much the same performance. tetra customer services are also really really good should you ever need parts
if you want something cheap and cheerful though check out the all ponds solutions 2000 series externals they're cheap but pretty good quality, completely silent and aps are good with spares etc.
If you're willing to spend some money look at perhaps fluval 305 would do you nicely or a g6 if...
he's probably thinking internal if its a little tank for his daughter.
go with an Eheim 2400 Aquaball 45 will be perfect flow rate for the tank even if you decide to plant it at that size.
+1 with the gold fish are a bad idea. go with some small tropicals.
i use a fishing bomb (oval shaped) some fishing line (about 2m of it as long as its longer than the tubes) and a pipe cleaner (something like this http://smartshopbuy.com/images/Tools/cy ... rushes.jpg) tied to the other end.
Pour boiling water down the tubes first to loosen it, drop the bomb...
do the internal filters on all 3 tanks weekly or whenever I notice flow rate dropping do the external filter once a month or again when I notice flow rate has dropped.
clean the external piping every 2 months
naah strongest flow will always be at the sealed end assuming water isn't flowing uphill
it needs the pressure generated by pushing against the closed end to come out of the holes so until it reaches the end the water just rushes past the holes :)
I have a tetratech IN filter in my 200l tank (with an external running too) its a good filter but because of its venturi its very very loud.
With regards to the extra basket I currently do weekly water changes in my other 2 tanks anyway so I'll be adding this tank into that weekly change...
ok so the little tiny 40 should be enough for the size of the tank I'm after. Thats good the filters not that expensive.
I'm hoping aesthetics wise that I'll be able to hide it either behind some large leafed plants or somethink like vallis or perhaps behind some bog wood etc using some cleaver...
they're not that ugly but they do present a few questions.
Quick look on charterhouse shows they do 4 different sizes 45, 60, 130 and 160
now the 45 they rate at 380lph which would be the 10x turn over rate most people seem to recommend however as we all know rated flow is never actual flow...
I'm planning on kitting out a spare 35l tank I have for some shrimp and probably a few danios. It'll be my first attempt at a proper planted tank so i'm massively in the dark and also lacking equipment :(
The problem is its current internal filter is one of those Hagen Stingray Elite 10...
