    Advice on substrate

I agree but the hairgrass for me can be painstaking if your not running co2. As for weights for the plants, you shouldn't have to add anything on to the bottom at all, just push firmly into the soill and it will stay..once planted after a couple of weeks it should anchor itself in the soils...

    Advice on substrate

I wouldn't listen to much to the worker In pets at home.. If u do the water changes properly I can't see how it would end up all over ur tank. I had fine play sand with about 9 corydoras and never had an issue. If u want to use sand, use sand :-) Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

    Soil under Akadama

I went down this path for my jungle nano so check out my journal for tips on substrate mate, ask away on there if you have any questions, otherwise I think going with john innes no.3 should be fine underneath, I included Irish peat moss but now if I did it differently I may of left it out...

    Salvaging a soil substrate tank

yes your right, I also use akadama in my jungle nano and have a quite an interesting debate on the methodology behind it. have a look if this interests you. I formed my substrate using bonsai akadama, peat moss and compost. more info is there on my jungle journal. I must say out of all my...

    just a quick one!

You could always buy biomax bags and stack them under the substrate at the back in the deep areas? This would minimize anaerobic possibilities under the sand. I know sand is pretty bad for anaerobic troubles.. I know people use these biomax bags a lot. I have used them in my scapes too. Just an...

    Salvaging a soil substrate tank

ok so what aquatic soil are you using? Im unsure why you have tannins from aquatic soil. Do you have wood in your tank that is new? Is your aquatic soil a fluval product by any chance?

    Salvaging a soil substrate tank

what soil substrate are you using? cat liter as substrate will be very messy.. as its clay based it will murk up very easily. but like everything once settled it will clear. having gravel sitting on top of soil will eventually sink through the soil exposing the soil to the top. this is due to...

Aquasoil under Eco-complete / Inert (low tech dry start)

Speaking from experience and lack of funds I spent money in ADA substrate and covered it with standard black gravel as you suggest, thinking that it would still work and by using the standard gravel I could gain done height. I was wrong. The gravel was ultimately heavier and the ADA was lighter...

    Black Bonsai Soil

I'm currently using bonsai akadama, 2m-3mm granual size. Its light but settles and have never really. Had an issue. Its very clean too. I washed it twice so may be why. Its brown though not black. I got 10l for 16 quid. I also used John innes no.3 compost with a very small amount of Irish peat...

    What Substrate

This is from BigTom... Hi Jack, I've used JI3 and various other commercial composts in shrimp tanks without any issue. However, be aware that soils, unless mineralised, will leach large amounts of ammonia and fertilisers for the first few weeks or even months. Unless you have a large, healthy...
