Im currently using a hydor eth 200w external heater on a eheim 2213 classic filter and from what i can see, there isnt really any noticeable reduce in flow. Regarding ro water, most lfs sell them at £1 a gallon (4.34 litres).
i get a thin metal wire, feed it though the hose from one end to the other, attach a wet rag and tie it and pull it through the hose. By doing this you are cleaning every single piece of dirt in the hose. I did try attaching a garden hose from one side to the other but never though it was clean...
Having more media in the filter tends to reduce your flow rate. By removing a sponge or two you increase the flow rate of the filter because there's nothing holding it back (or blocking the water's route).
i sometime get a humming noise when i clean out my eheim 2213. To stop this i removed the end cap from the spray bar for a bit (to get all the air out) and out it back on. After that it's dead quiet. Maybe you can try that.
At the moment i'm using a eheim 2213, can't complain. I don't recommend HOB filters, it tends to be more noisy than external filters plus you can't contain alot of media in it.
