Cheers darrel, what size of tank would you reccommend for that type of set up?

Apistogramma macmasteri breeding tank - Planning

I'm now planning my third tank. I currently have my 260l community tank and my wee nano - both high tech. After a bit or research I've decided I'd like to have a go at keeping: and breeding some dwarf cichlids. I really like the look of A. Macmasteri. A stunning little fish. I don't know if I...

Just a quick post with some pics of the tank! Not much to report. No major algae issues but then again no rampant growth either!

    Murph's 260l 'Compatibility'

Went for a rescape and ripped out the Beginnings 'scape. Its funny how much tastes can change in such a short time. I went from wanting a basic iwagumi Scape to a much more planted scape in short time. I've even change the type of fish I'd like to keep, but more on that later. First of I'd...

Well thats the tank planted. Decided to go for HC as I found some in the local Dobbies garden centre in Ayr, A bit of a find as its usually just algae infested muck in the plant tanks. 3 for a tenner. Blxya in the top left corner from the big tank and there is a tub of Parvula up the back but...

Cheers Clive. I think the hardscape is causing issues in the flow of the C02. To big for the tank.

Crappy Iphone pics but here it is. I've got alot of 'water roots' halfway up alot of the stems, whats the deal with this? some plants are taking off others havent. P. Helferi has melted almost completely.

I've decided to sack this tank.... I'll get another photo of how it is currently but then I'll be ripping it out and going for something a bit more balanced and driftwood inspired. I think when I put this tank together I was going to have riccia foreground and hairgrass background! I did...

Figures clive  , I think theres enough c02 in the tank its just trying to get it to the back wall where the stems are, I've repositioned the spray bars so hopefully it will help. I might add another filter to boost flow.

Tank seems to be going well. Tend to wish I'd went down the driftwood route now though! Only problem is that my hygrophila stems tend to rot in the middle for no apparent reason? I trim the dead parts and replant the tops.

Thanks ceg! Chilled, it is inside, the way the tubing bends and the wall to the right of the tank makes if easier to put it inside, if I ever take 'proper' photos then I'll take it out. I think I want a shorter tank as this on is a bit too tall for my liking!

    Beginnings - Help needed!

Seem to be having a few algae issues, really only amongst the blxya, it may gave been in the plants when I put them in. I'm sure it's down to flow and too much light. As it's a really deep tank I think I'll need another powerhead. I was beginning to add a third 39watt t5 for a few hours but...

Just a wee post to say that the lights have only been on for half the photo period and all the plants have been pearling like mad! Plants that haven't before. Just need to watch for algae!

Cheers magpie. Well I actually bout this setup, minus substrate and hardscape from another forum member! The princely sum of 165 british pounds was paid, posted. I'd reckon it would be double that depending where you did your shopping!

Okay so got my hardscape, substrate and light delivered from Planted box. Cheers James! Been playing around with the layout and had to butcher the lovely bit of manzanita wood to fit! Was a bit worried it would leave the snapped ends a bit 'raw' but its turned out okay. I'm not...

my new lights arrived as recommended by Geroge, they look really neat, much better than the over hanging ones and means I can get rid of the bars down the back. Plants seem to be coming on a bit but I keep getting further and further away from my original idea!

Should I just up my dry fert amounts by 25% for the next batch then? CO2 flow seems okay throughout the tank, its kinda high I think anyway and as the stocking is low I feel I can get away with a higher level. Air pump at night probably helps.

Thanks Tom! I've replaced the background with plain frosted film from wilkinson, cheers Garuf. I've ordered two new lights to sit on top of the tank so will have 156w available, will I need to up the ferts to keep algae at bay?

Its good init! You aint seen none of that before! But seriously, hardscape picked out with the kind help of James over at PlantedBox and should be on its way very shortly. Dave - Sorry mate, light promised to someone else.

Cheers Clive, I ask because I was wondering about the ferts, I dosing my regular EI ferts, as rcommended by flyfisherman, on mon,wed and Friday with trace on tuesday and Thursday. I was worried that if I was taking 100l out every day that I wouldn't have the right build up of nutrients? I...

Cheers  I'm still doing 100l water changes daily. Is this going to be slowing the growth or causing any problems? I won't keep it up for ever but I don't mind it at the moment. I've little or no algae, a few green spots on glass and a little on the hardscape but nothing I'd call a...

A quick update on the tank. The background is meant to be a translucent white but doesn't look at all white. It'll be getting replaced with a diffused film from TGM. Plants seem to be coming on a bit, vivpara melted at the back so will be putting some more in. I'll be doing a big replant in...

    Beginnings - Help needed!

Excuse the Phone pic (the big camera is loaned out to a friend). Well this is the first attempt at planting, not so easy in akadama with big muckle fingers! I think most of the stem plants will get the chop for the final scape but at the advice of members of the forum I've got a fair bit of...

    Beginnings - Help needed!

Just a wee update. Used akadama as my substrate with a light sand foreground. Akadama is abot an inch and a half thick. Is that enough? It's a bit late now as it's filled. I've got a few plants in there with more on the way. Hairgrass and some fast growing stems to get the tank started...

I've had issues with the ebay purchase of my black substrate, i.e its not here yet. I reckon there wasn't enough anyway so I've put down some play sand as a base layer and had a go at arranging the rocks. The black substrate when it gets here is 2-3mm so shouldn't mix that badly with the play...

Cheers Neil, I like the gap (or negative space if i'm being fruity!) between the to big stones. I don't want the egg crates to rot or anything when the get wet?? I have 20kg of black substrate but I'm thinking of using playsand in the foreground for a bit of lightness??

As I'm still waiting on bits and pieces getting delivered so I would have a go at arranging my rocks into some sort of 'scape! I'm not putting them into the tank without substrate, They big rock weights 20+ I reckon! forgive the wee stones propping them up but you get the general idea. This...

    Beginnings - Help needed!

Thanks for the advice, it's all been taken on board. I'm having to use 2 39 watt t5s as the 34" tubes I need only seem to be thus strong. I'm worried this won't be enough light? Also the power glo tubes I bought are very 'bluey' will swapping one for a life-glo give a more pleasing whitebalance?

I'm think of using a eheim 2078 and a powerhead and the 300watt Hydor inline heater. Lighting I was thinking 2x 54watt tubes?? Planting - I'm after a iwagumi style so lots of carpet so low growing plants are top priority and fewer stems hardscape something like this with a 3rd and mayby...

Hi all, Just got my first ever tank, an Osaka 260l. I am new to the hobby so will be more or less learning as I go along with, hopefully, as few mistakes as possible! I pretty much have it all to learn and the only piece of equipment I have is the tank with light bar but with no lights. A...
