    Asian Cube 20L

How about a 2 1/2 year update? Tank is still here, I don't do very much to it, just top up with fresh RO when needed & that is it. Plants are doing well, though growing quite slowly. Still a lot of algae of different sorts but have given up trying to get rid of it. It's as low maintenance as I...

    Nelson's Low Tech Asian Blackwater

Which shop did you get the Chocolates from Nelson? Was it Wholesale Tropicals? I bought 8 from there a month back as well, doing really well on both freeze dried Daphnia & Brine Shrimp, and frozen mosquito larvae and brine shrimp. I also have a few Rosy loaches in the tank with them that were...

Pathway to Rio Negro 864L (biotope)

What if you swapped the two end pieces over? Sometimes it can be stronger to have biggest first! Will be interesting to see how this all turns out. I do like biotopes

Pathway to Rio Negro 864L (biotope)

I don't have any where near the experience of some on here, but I would advise you to reconsider using such big lumps of wood. Because they are just big lumps you will get lots of dead spots around them and underneath them which is not ideal for getting a good flow around the aquarium. I think...

    Aquanano 55 'Pride wood'

Hi Nayr, first off I think you have what I would call aquanano 40, a 40cm cube but 55 litres so maybe thats where the confusion has crept in? If so I have the same one and you might want to rethink the scape as if you leave as is, nothing will ever grow in front of the filter outflow, as it is...
  6. ourmanflint

    1000+

Hi You'll need to add an anti-siphon hole to your outflow drain to stop it from draining too much. Just a small hole a few mm below the water level on the outflow pipe will do it. Then if pumps ever stop the water will stop draining when it gets to the air hole and breaks the siphon. You...

    Gourami Gloaming #4

Chocs are fine at ph7 Lindy, i kept them in London tap water for a couple of years no problems at all. One of the biggest killers of Chocs seems to be bacteria introduced via poor quality live food.

    The Journey

I have had similar problems in the past. Its probably not the shippers fault but the trans shipper, as they will probably just buy space in a container, and the trans shippers send everything to southampton for the uk by default. Looks really good though.

    Fish room New Parosphromenus !

Hi lindy, one of the reasons I asked is I have a group of 9 of these types of Paros that I also got from Colin same time as david strickland, and I dont know what to do with them? Not having an ID is really bugging me I must admit.
  12. ourmanflint

    Fish room New Parosphromenus !

Are these all from the fish you got from Colin at the fish hut Lindy? If so what are you going to call them when you eventually pass them on? Do you have any better idea of an ID? Rod

    Bufo Bill's Boraras Cube

I think the key with Boraras is to have far more than you had to stop any particular fish from being picked on. If you had a shoal of 20 fish I doubt you would have had such problems. Tank is looking good though.

    Gourami Gloaming #4

I would look to the substrate Lindy. Is the TMC nutrasoil buffering up to the 6.5 mark. I know people generally use it to drop the pH to that level, but maybe it also increases pH to that as well? Rod

Teenage budgets and great expectations [45 Gallon Shallow Cube]

What an amazing start! I can only echo what Ed has already said, you can achieve a lot with very little, and Tom's thread is a great intro. As for your choice of light, it would work but would need to be very high above the tank as 48w of Led is an awful lot of light for such a shallow tank...

    Asian Jungle

Cheers Ed. It's a 40cm cube. Wish I could go bigger but I have to limit myself with this for a while.
  19. ourmanflint

    Asian Jungle

Yes the larger ones are definitely more colourful. And at least you will get to see them when they are in your tank! I have to sit still for 10 minutes before they show themselves
  20. ourmanflint

    Asian Jungle

The light is great Lindy. I was worried it might be too bright and it is very bright, but at about 40cm above my tank it covers everything pretty evenly. I have lots of Salvinia natans floating so that also tends to cut out a lot of light when it gets overgrown. I managed to make a little movie...

    Asian Jungle

Yes it's another blackwater Asian Cube!! This is the tank I snuck into the back room when my girlfriend was away on holiday. My intention was to set up a softwater Junglist looking tank. So I wanted a big sort of tree in it, that would sort of look like one of those big buttressed figs you get...

Roots Dyed Dark - Low Tech Blackwater (updated 08-04-14)

Roots Dyed Dark - Low Tech Blackwater (updated 08-04-14)

Sad news Lee, I'd definitely put money on bloodworms causing the problems if they were eaten by the Chocs.

    500 Litre sumped System

I suggested this option because Jon is already set up for it, it may be necessary to supplement CO2 dependant on need in main display, but I think at least CO2 levels should be manageable and controllable with some experimentation. I agree with Humbert that having two tanks would inevitably lead...

Humbert, I meant gas cylinders sorry, not canister filters. My bad.
  26. ourmanflint

    500 Litre sumped System

Err well the whole reason for using canisters etc is to dissolve more CO2 into the tank is it not? Then why not use fast growing plants in a sump on a reversed lighting period? So when they respire releasing CO2 directly into the water, and voila CO2 levels in display increase. Also they will...
  27. ourmanflint

    500 Litre sumped System

Hi Jon A sump is a brilliant asset for a planted tank as well. I'msure youre familiar with the concept of reversed lighting periods for marine tanks, well why not try the same for your planted tank and never worry about CO2? Wish I had the space to try it myself! Rod

    Asian Cube 20L

bit of an update.. I think the tank is now finished, the fish are in and I'm pretty happy with the way it looks. I now have 6 Pseudomugil gertrudae and 5 Parosphromenus nagyi "cherating", although it can take ages to find one sometimes even in a tank so small. I've got a 40cm cube on the way...

    Asian Cube 20L

Tank seems to be cycled now and parameters as of today are PH 7.0 dKh 90ppm GH 160ppm Not perfect for keeping Paro's but not too bad. I will do a weekly 30% water change with rain water for the next few weeks and see how parameters change.

    Asian Cube 20L

Hey Darrel interesting read! I did prewash my cat litter in london tap water so yes pretty hard stuff, so depending on the adsorption capacity, a fair percentage of the adsorption sites would have already been filled by Ca2+ I would imagine. I wonder if the red colour of the cat litter is also...

    Asian Cube 20L

Hi Darrel I have been thinking about this overnight and it seems to me that high CEC substrates have the opposite effect you are implying. They behave like DI resins in that they capture Ca and Mg ions and swap them for H ions. This will lead to a drop in kH, pH and GH not an increase, which is...

    Asian Cube 20L

Thanks for the info Darrel. I did read around and I thought the general opinion was that Dragon stone was relatively neutral regarding hardness issues, I was going to start using moss peat in filter bags once tank was cycled to remove any excess Calcium/Magnesium. I'm happy to change everything...

    Asian Cube 20L

Whilst the tank is cycling, I'm getting bored, so have rescaped so as to minimise large areas of dark spots I was getting and increase planting area. Also added some small pieces of dragon stone to see how it looks . I'm quite pleased and think the plants will be happier.

    Asian Cube 20L

Postman came today as well! I ordered a small 5W LED to replace the useless 9w PL that came with the tank. Can't believe the difference, the last time I had a marine tank, LED's were just coming in, must be at least 2-3 times as bright as the 9w PL. The downside is, it's got 1 blue LED which...

    Asian Cube 20L

Hi Lee You bet! Just looking to see whats around and it is slim pickings, but in no rush. Of the ones I have seen, they are all very small so sexing difficult so would have to buy a small group and grow them out a bit to try and get a pair. I've got my eye on a 40cm cube (then a 50!) so should...

    Asian Cube 20L

Thought I should make some sort of effort to follow the progress of my AquaNano 30. I've had lots of different fish over the years but 10 years ago I had what I thought was the perfect tank! It had Licorice gouramis, Chocoltate gouramis, Psueudomugil gertrudae and a shoal of Boraras. 10 years...

Hi Darren, celestials are from near Inle as well, I'd be surprised if they weren't actually found in Inle as well to be honest. I remember seeing these in 2006 at Chatuchak Market in Bangkok, before they hit the fish world, and asked where they came from and was told Inle lake, but seeing as...

    Tom's Paro stuff.

Yup! That's probably what happened, got them from Tachbrook tropicals, seemed to know his stuff, but relying on exporters being accurate in what they are selling.

    Tom's Paro stuff.

Nice Tom. My AquaNano 30 has a rear compartment for filtration etc and I was going to do the same with back wall ie moss wall or fern wall! The Paros you have do look like normal deissneri to me, used to have some exactly the same, but I'm no expert. Cheers
