Lava Rock as Hardscape - How much does it really affect water quality?

It's more porous but you still need to do water changes. I can't imagine anything you could use that would change that. So, if you would prefer to use another type of rock, don't worry about it. I use lava rock because it's cheap, light, and the dark type is very attractive. P

    Water changes without dechlorinator

Should we really be worried about heating up water for water changes? That must be expensive and I don't bother with it... I have had water temps of 28/29 this summer and I just use tap water (with Prime). Once the 50% water change is done, the temp is back down to 22/23. I add the new water...

Different PH Values in the tank

Hi guys, I've noticed that my pH meter gives and unstable reading when too close to the flow pump: - If I put the meter in the opposite corner, I get a stable reading. Cheers, P

    pH pens and low KH

Just how inaccurate can an un-calibrated, poorly looked-after pH pen be? I leave mine with the electrode immersed in the aquarium 24/7. I switch it on every now and then and do pH profiles occasionally. I calibrate it every couple of months and bought a new electrode after about a year when in...

    Who to Trust?

Voted other. My only test kit is JBL for KH. I used a Seneye but stopped after the first slide ran out. Now use it only for PAR.

    Ph drop and bacteria

Bacteria are some of the toughest mothers around. They live everywhere on earth, even where no other life can exist. Sure they might be affected somehow by a pH change but affected negatively? I doubt it. Just make sure that your fish are OK when the pH is at it's lowest.

    surface film

I've been running this for one day and I have to agree. No dirt, film or bubbles on the surface. Before I had a Koralia Nano tilted towards the surface. It blew my stem plants sideways but it wasn't enough to eliminate surface scum.
