Mirrorless cameras are DSLRs without the pentaprism.
They are about smaller size, lighter weight, and trendy look.
If you don't feel the want/need for the pentaprism, go for it.
I will grab a DSLR though if I have to pick only one.
The D7000 is coupled with the better lens but the D5500 gets the newer/better sensor.
For me, the major factor is articulating screen (D5500) vs AF Fine-Tune (D7000).
They are mutually exclusive. Learning curve is the same for both models.
I would pick the D5500.
Kit lenses are not junk.
Generally, expensive/premium lenses have their use when you need larger aperture.
And that's pretty much about it. They are nice to have. They may make job easier.
And people can brag about having them. But most people don't "need" them.
