    Lighting Help 60 CM Tank.

Relatively small and intense light source(s) + water's ripple = underwater shimmer. The small light sources are easy to focus and water's ripple acts like lenses. Spectrum doesn't play a part in it. Before the popularity of LED's, metal halide was the choice to get the shimmering effect.

I wonder if steel fishing wires and sleeves are OK for this application?

    Chohiros Aquasky low tech

A high tech tank doesn't "need" a massive amount of light but it "can" take a massive amount of light if you want. Actually, a minimum light level that a non-CO2 tank needs is higher than a tank with CO2 injection. Because plants will have to spend more energy to gather both CO2 and light...

    LED's For 60cm Deep Tank?

George Farmer used various LED's on this tank and couldn't make Ludwigia arcuata turn red even though PAR values were high. But the plants started to turn "orange" with T8 bulbs. That was about 6 years ago. Today's LED units are better...

Currently using a evergrow full spectrum 2120

You mean 180 at the substrate (from the picture in the link)? If so, yes that's too high. Try looking at this chart. I would not go below 30 at the substrate, by the way. http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/10-lighting/105774-par-vs-distance-t5-t12-pc-new-chart.html

Currently using a evergrow full spectrum 2120

So 20 is the new normal now? I think that's too low. I've been in this hobby for about 8-9 years. The first time I've heard about "you should use lower light" was from Tom Barr. For HC, it seems he recommends 40-50. Again, this is from a guy who advocates using low light. So if he uses 40 for...

    Be careful of cheap lights

Nah, can't be Malaysia. Their wage is higher than China :) http://www.china-briefing.com/news/2014/06/03/china-asean-wage-comparisons-70-production-capacity-benchmark.html

    T5 wattages and tube length

Standard specs for T5 849mm is either 39w for high output or 21w for normal output. So it seems 35w for a bulb of the same length is a bit non-standard. Generally you can overdrive a bulb (using 35w bulb with 39w fixture) which reduces the bulb lifespan. The 35w bulb at iaquatics is 742mm...

New ADA LED pendant light unit coming in 2016

I'm afraid it won't be as cool as in the first picture. It seems there will be an LED unit attached underside the curved glass, similar to Solar lighting series. Info as new as 14 Jan...

    Advise on t8 lighting please

My tank is 76 cm x 76 cm and 60 cm high. I used 6 x T8's with good reflectors with it. Currently It is 4 x T8's + 3 LED's + 1 T5 and another LED is on order to get better light coverage and intensity. So this is from my experience. Your tank is quite a narrow one. So the 4 tubes should be...

Converting from T8 to T5 lumen question

T5s are newer generation and have better efficiency. So generally they have better lumens per watt than T8s. Most 18-20w T8s are about 1000-1300 lumens. Most 24w T5HOs are about 1600-1800 lumens. This guide might be useful. The main unit is lumen...

    Too Much Light.... REALLY!?

I typed it wrong. The "if so" actually meant "if it's newly setup". So yes, I think upping it is a good idea.

    Too Much Light.... REALLY!?

Seeing that you've had some experience (from the t8 set), I'm not sure if I need to ask this. Is the tank newly setup, not just an old tank getting new lighting? If so, could it be that your LED light was already good but the new plants just needed to adjust to the new environment, and by the...

    Too little light

Remember: it is almost illegal to say "too little light" here. When there is too little light, the plants or some parts of it will just die. And when that happens, the water quality and oxygen level will go south. Harmful bacteria could multiply very quickly and harm your critters. A few years...

At first I preferred the TMC, but after seeing your comment, I compared them via a better display. Now ADA gets my vote.

PAR Readings - what are good readings ?

Yes that's true. But for tank sizes we keep, the PAR can be higher when filling with water because of reflection. :) Try looking at charts #2 and #3 : Lighting an Aquarium with PAR instead of Watts
