Are you saying you had Amano larvae survive to adulthood in freshwater?
That’s all I can say. I’ve got no other explanation. I’ve read that it is possible, but I’d not heard of it
I am not at all expert enough to know. I have had cherry shrimp breed in a community tank with Tiger barbs and Kribs, I was given half a dozen small specimens and expected them to be eaten. A year later I had plague proportions of shrimp. Amano shrimp, like female common frogs produce many hundreds of eggs, in the absence of significant predators and with suitable environmental conditions we could expect at least dozens to reach maturity, which takes about 6 months. Amano shrimp fry are, supposedly, capable of only a few days of survival in freshwater, but as far as I can ascertain, like Salmon, in need of salt water conditions to reach maturity. There was a previous thread on this here, some time ago.
Further to this, I’m wondering if what I was sold as ‘Amano shrimp’ would be perhaps ‘ghost shrimp’? I believe they look similar but are more translucent? I’ll try to get a photo when they come out next, but from what I have read they do breed in freshwater. Anyone any experience with Ghost Shrimp?
