Darkening seiryu with vinegar?

Hi,

My local low budget supplier sells both acid treated seiryu and untreated seiryu. The acid treated seiryu is a nice dark, almost black color.

I was wondering if you could use 30% vinegar (acetic acid) to darken seiryu? Did anyone try this, and what are your findings?

That would be hydrochloric acid, right?
I'm trying to avoid that, nasty stuff.
