fluval 105 help...water spilt

Hi, i wanted to replace the sponge in the filter which is under a cabinet under the tank.

when i turned off the pump and reduced the flow to off i noticed there was still water in the piping coming and going to the tank. I opened up the canister and loads of water came gushing out from the pipes. is there a way to stop this? am i doing anything wrong?

Sounds like either the pump is still running or the 'off' valves aren't closed completely.
