In your experiances, how long does softwood normally last in an aquarium. I've found a thick piece of root, with lots of knots and striped markings that look perfect (I am sorry, I dont have a camera).
I'd like to add it to the aquarium. I'll go through the whole boiling/baking/waterlogging thing first but if it only lasts a few months, then I wont bother. I'd like it to last at least a couple of years.

any thoughts?

You know what...if it's old and gnarly with a tight grain it'd probably be as good as hard wood and last a very long time...I came across some such pine wood in Thetford Forest the other day and I'd put it my aquarium no worries...
