under gravel filter? emersed-growth, shallow tank

I have not yet set up anything either way yet, a little christmas break project planned, but any reason why this would be a bad idea? I already have a tiny submersible pump to trickle water over emersed plants and just move the water around a shallow tank and/or a paludarium. Then I thought a cheap internal corner filter and air pump would be more serviceable and not require building a foam board enclosure for the pump. I then thought that an under gravel filter and air pump would be even neater. I would be using aquasoil (should be large enough not to clog the holes but some mesh would solve that too.

Yeah I have done a UGF using Fluval Stratum in the past. And it was ok, used crochet netting as a mesh barrier from hobbycraft/range
