Im heavy dosing excel in my shrimp tank at the moment for staghorn with no ill effect, 5ml in 35l tank per day for 4 days, all staghorn has gone pink and shrimp seem happy. Just watch for changes and do a W/C if anything odd happens...
Worth cleaning out your filter, up your co2 (which can be even more risky with shrimp) and reducing lighting period first to see if the staghorn dissipates before over dosing.
Also are you sure the first one wasnt just plain flourish rather than flourish excel? i would guess it would have to be an antique to go brown...
