What is this and how do I trim it?

It doesn't seem to match anything in the guide to trimming stickied here. Its growing like nuts though so I want to hack off the big leafs and leave just all its new growth there.

It's an echinodorous species. You trim it by removing old outer leaves.

cut the stems at the bottom or try and snap them out of the root/bulb bundle ?

Better to pull them away at the base, If not cut them as low down as possible with out damaging the rest of the plant

ok will give that a try tomorrow night when i'm fiddling one of the other plants has taken over and is swamping the hair grass which is finally starting to grow though slowly so it needs hacking back.

while I've got you here though whats a good carpeting plant to run in a purely low tech environment no ferts no co2 no liquid carbon also if not asking too much something that grows pretty quickly.

Best bet would be echinodorous tennelus. Very low maintenance and does well in most conditions. Just plant it and leave it to send out runners which it will do readily after a few weeks settling in
