Yea it is pricy. My big tank is Tropcia plant substrate with a gravel layer on top, works out cheaper and does not affect PH and Kh noticeably. Means layering, but its a cost vs time argument

I am thinking of starting up my 12l Nano cube (250mm x 250mm x 250mm) as a shrimp tank again soon, but also looking at a low tech planted. Does anyone have any advice on what substrate will bring out the best colours in small shrimp and do a good job for the plants? Water PH is around 7.9-8.0

what size is your tank? I am running an AquaManta EFX 1500 U on my Rio 400 they cost £190 new (£175 without the UV) and has really good output. Smaller ones start from about £80 new

Its around the same size as what you have suggested and more flexible with its mounting.

Rio 400's are a lovely big tanks. What equipment are you running on yours?

It is always tricky, takes a bit of reading but they normally give you an idea of size. But I often get a few piece and scape around it

Yea go with the blue, brings out the colours better all round. The white makes it seem a bit more washed out. I am putting a blue background on my tank when I refurb it over the next few weeks.

Great idea moose, my suggestion would be to add a notes column to the excel. Can add any special ferts requirements (e.g. extra iron for red plants to maintain colour) over time
