Hello all. Long time since I updated but I’m still about. Small update.
Managing a weekly 30%-50% water change at the moment along with Easy Life filter media conditioner, Blue Exit to combat the hair algae (that I suspect is blue Cyanobacteria), a wee bit of Profito and of course tap water...
Hey all, my new arrival is finally here. He is now 4 weeks old.
As a result I haven't been able to give my tank the daily water changes I had hoped to be able to do and now have a hair algae problem. [emoji24]
Anyone have any recommendations or links to threads as to how is best to deal...
So much good information here. Thanks for the responses. Glad I have all you clever boffins to fall back on.
@AverageWhiteBloke - Indeed I do live in Scotland. Thanks for the nicely detailed response.

I think mine may be Marino moss from an old moss ball I had in my tank a long time ago that spread in the water over time around the tank. [emoji28]

Interesting, I get this on my bogwood and glass but not on my plants. I didn't realise it was an algae, I just assumed it was some sort of moss.

Thanks all for the replies. That's very reassuring. Helps me a great deal. I guess as long as I keep the substrate fairly clean and do regular water changes I should be safe.
It's mainly due to wanting a planted tank with shrimp and fish. But don't want to spend a lot of money just to...
Hi,
What do you all recommend for testing water?
I was looking at the API freshwater master kit, but some of the negative reviews on Amazon seemed to suggest it isn't a reliable test kit.

Some more photos with the lights on.
I have the lights set to go on at 8am until 4pm, and they are on the brightest setting just now. I don't have the wifi add on as the price is ridiculous for what it is, so can only use the basic settings on the light.
Also have an Eheim air pump with...
Thanks for the ID. Does C.Ponterderiifolia have red underside it's leaves? As most of the crypts I've replanted had this, as well as pinkish stems.

So I decided to go with the Fluval Fresh & Plant 2.0. My husband was kind enough to buy it for me. I think he feels sorry for me being stuck in the house all day everyday. :)
I have yet to install it though. I want to get all the inlet/outlet pipes sorted first, which also involves cutting...
Well the link mentions it as a bog plant, so will be okay on the edges of your pond where it isn't completely submersed I would imagine.

Would also depend on the thickness of the tank glass (or whatever material your tank is made of), so you might want to add that.
Only mention this as when I was looking at lights I noticed some would only suit a certain thickness of glass. Probably due to the units overall weight or...
Stick some hay inside as well in that case, just make sure it's dry before you do or the hay will rot over winter. Cover it with a bin bag or sheet but let air in somewhere.
Will be a nice place for smaller hibernating insects too until spring arrives. :)

Not that I am a expert, but you could insulate around it it with small straw bales if they are readily available. That's a trick used by chicken and bee keepers to keep hens and bees happy over winter. It's also a trick used in gardening to keep frost off plants. As the straw is hollow it...
How big is your tank and what do you have it stocked with?
Wondering if they have something due to a lowered immune system in turn due to overstocking, but couldn't say as more info is needed.
Might be worth moving them to a quarantine tank to reduce their stress as it may help them recover...
So lighting wise I was thinking of investing in a Fluval Fresh & Plant 2.0 LED 46W for high tech plants, as would love some reds as well as greens in my plant setup.
Does anyone think that would be a good investment for High Tech planted?
My only other thought would be DIY suspended LED bulbs...
From Aqua Pure site:
From personal experience using Aqua Pure balls, if your doing daily water changes then the bacteria/enzymes may not have enough time to work in the water to be effective, as the balls really need time to breakdown and slowly release the bacteria/enzymes. Sometimes they...
Thankyou, I just hope I can find some big enough buckets around the house, or else they may end up in the bath wrapped in cling film until I'm ready for them. XD

So I introduced myself a while ago but then r/l kept me away from adding anything further. To make matters more complicated I found out I was pregnant (yey unplanned pregnancies). To cut it short I'm now 4 months pregnant and my poor dirty tank is driving me nuts. So after some journal...
I have my 130L tank on a big thick oak side unit from Oakland FS (not meaning to advertise or anything there). So don't limit yourself with regards to stands. As long as the unit is solid, can sit level, has storage etc, then it doesn't have to be a stand specifically made for aquariums.
Here...
I found my rams have bred like mad in my algae ridden old planted tank to the point they have cleaned all the algae and have slowed down due to lack of food. At cooler temps they just don't breed, but in a warm tank they are happy to multiply.
I feed mine standard off the shelf tropical fish...
I am looking to do a low light planted tank and have found via my local Scottish Water quality website that my area is soft water.
I want to avoid adding any chemicals unless necessary, is that doable with SW?
What fish/inverts would be good for a soft water set up?
And do I have to worry...
That's good to know.
I have an old internal Fluval 3plus filter in the tank just now, but I plan to switch to a external Eheim classic 600 that I received today.
(Probably overkill for a 130L though :) )

My 130L suffered an outbreak of cyanobacteria that slimed my plants. After treatment the survivors are mostly java fern that has naturally rooted to some wood pieces.
I plan to redo my tank completely, and would love to know if there is any chance I can reuse these plants/drift wood? Or would...
Hi there, I have just registered via tapatalk but just realised it set my username to my previous username used on tapatalk instead of the one I wanted to use here.
Can an Admin change my name or will I have to re-register with the username I want?

Been an blundering amateur enthusiast for over 10 years now, from a humble goldfish tank to a heavily planted tank.
Started off with some rescued shubunkins that a former friend was threatening to 'cook n flush' just because she wanted tropicals. Ugh!
Anyway the shubunkins grew and so I...
