    Dutchi-gumi

Cheers james i do love those black lava rocks, thing is tho they are only active when the lights are off, but they are quite easy to propogate if you provide a balaced nutritious substrate, they also eat hair algae, lol. I did like the way i had originally but I thought the scape was starting...

Eheim external - when to renew media?

I do know that jointing compounds that contain oil used in the plumbing industry cannot be used with plastic or rubbers as the oils they contain will slowly eat away at it. The may or may not be true for vaseline. As suggested above silicon grease will be safe, I would get it from a plumbing...

Elatine hydropiper aka Micranthemum sp. "Monte Carlo"

Hey guys, Do any of you know if the plant in Georges most recent scape tries to lift from the substrate like HC (cuba) or is it more firmly rooted? Thanks
  19. O'Neil

    George's One-Pot Iwagumi Challenge

George does this plant require mechanical retardation like HC?

    Back to my roots

What screws did use for this, brass? I might have a go with some of my own driftwood.
  22. O'Neil

    Back to my roots

I really like that piece of driftwood Ian. I have a fluval roma 200, which is a basic planted tank, really nothing special at all. It's about 95% java fern, but i love it. It hasn't changed for over a year now and think it's time for an update, but nothing too drastic. I'm wanting to try new...

I think I also found that one, there was interesting one about killifish aswell, I'll have to try and find that one. This guy has a few videos, he must be something like the venezuelan Attenborough.

    Natural environment / Biotopes

Hey guys, Been a while since I've been on here. I've been looking for videos or documentaries of the fish we see in our pet stores in their natural habitats for years and finally stumbled across Ivan Dalmar Mikolji.

    Dutchi-gumi

Only development this week is I have increased photoperiod by 1 hour and keeping ferts at the same level. Just done a big clean and removed some leaves, will post a more detailed update next weekend with pictures.
  36. O'Neil

    Dutchi-gumi

Thanks mate, Hmmmm could that be why I had holes in some leaves? I think I read something by "the ceg" along the lines of (holes in leaves always co2) not really sure tbh, I may have made that up, lol. I hadn't noticed the shrimp but they do seem more vibrant, I'm hoping they breed and fill...

    Dutchi-gumi

Cheers Ady. The new Alternanthera has almost doubled in a week, I think the issue was light. I had a look around in a pet shop and found that you can buy bulbs for this tank from the manufacturer "for plants". I then had a bit of a google and found that the ones I had in, had almost no red...
  38. O'Neil

    Dutchi-gumi

Got the Up Atomiser fitted over the weekend :D I did get a small amount of fine green algae so I've dialled back on the ferts slightly till the plants get bigger. Considering adding more Eleocharis sp 'mini' to help it fill in a bit faster but beyond that I'm happy with how things are going...
  39. O'Neil

All of the Nymphoides Leaves have melted away, but i'm not too concerned as there is new growth at the base already. I think it may be down to the Easy Carbo but I have no real evidence to support my theory other than they were thriving till I used it, so fingers crossed. The Alternanthera...

Look at the picture at the bottom, thats not even remotely complex. I didn't suggest he copy mine it was mearly to show him what I had, there is always more than one of doing the same thing. Remember.......KISS ; )
  52. O'Neil

    Dutchi-gumi

Breif update will upload pics tomorrow. The Nymphoides was thriving and now it has started melting, The only thing I can think of is that it may be sensitive to liquid Co2 afterall. I also stumbled accross a thread on this forum discussing Nymphoides sp Taiwan and liquid carbon. Deficiancy...

Probably Crazy Long Distance CO2 Idea

Sorry for the time it's taken me to do this, it's been one of those days. This is far from finished, just don't have the time to sort it out at the moment. My regulator connects into a gas valve, I installed this so I could isolate the supply with out fiddling with my settings, the first...

Haha nah mate bought some rather sensitive scales a while back, they only cost a tenner too ;)

    Distilled / Deionised Water

Thanks Ian having a bit of a dumb moment. After reading Alastairs post there was much facepalming, I must have read it a million times on this forum in past. "KISS" - are you ex military by any chance?
  64. O'Neil

    Distilled / Deionised Water

Alastair your a freaking Genious!!! If I can use that for my EI mix that saves alot of hassle, I must have been thinking about topping of an SW or something, lol.
  65. O'Neil

    Distilled / Deionised Water

Haha thanks mate but Scotch Corner is a fair drive from newcastle plus I'll have nowhere to put the stuff. Was looking at the 5 litre bottle at halfords as that would last a while

    Tonys 200l "Horatio's Cave" - #175 IAPLC 2013

    Stunning tank mate.
  67. O'Neil

    Distilled / Deionised Water

From what I've managed to find out so far distilling and deionising water are simply two different methods of achieving the same result. My question is, do you think deionised water from halfords would be ok for me to mix my EI ferts?
  68. O'Neil

Probably Crazy Long Distance CO2 Idea

Dunno what happened there with the quotes but nevermind.
  69. O'Neil

Probably Crazy Long Distance CO2 Idea

Gas would not be wasted, it will be going into the tank, to be used by plants. I do agree with that but I'd still do it the other way round mate, but that's personal pref' I guess. It's major fluctuations that cause issues and over a couple of days. I once ran for a couple of days with no...
  70. O'Neil

Probably Crazy Long Distance CO2 Idea

Nah mate I know the difference. If the solenoid was at the start of his run, the gas left in the main line would continue to gas off into the tank until the pressure became low enough to stop pushing thru the diffuser, thus wasting that gas unless unless you had a control at the other end to...
  71. O'Neil

Probably Crazy Long Distance CO2 Idea

I understand regulators regulating etc, i was thinking about expansion and contraction and if he would have to adjust his flow in winter/summer.
  72. O'Neil

Probably Crazy Long Distance CO2 Idea

    Waste of co2 imo mate
  73. O'Neil

    Roma 200 filtration

Or two APS 2000EF and spares are cheaper...........not a APS rep I promise, haha
  74. O'Neil

Probably Crazy Long Distance CO2 Idea

I'd have a check valve at either end of the run, 2 inline flow valves and solenoid as close to the tank as possible. This way when the Co2 shuts off at night the main line would remain pressurised, plus if the solenoid was in the shed it would take an age for the bubbles to stop while the main...
  75. O'Neil

    is it that simple?

You may have to fiddle with it again when you put in your hardscape as items such as logs and rocks could impede flow. On the tank on the tank I've just started I did run the Co2 system before I put anything in but that was only to ensure everything was working as it should and had no leaks...

    Roma 200 filtration

Sorry mate didn't mean to imply that you were cutting corners, I'm just not very articulate, haha. I understand wanting to cut costs tho, I want to do the same. Unfortunately my only external filter experience is with the APS filter I have now

    Roma 200 filtration

You'll have to forgive the Ceg, but I gotta back him up the man really knows his shizzle, I tried to cut corners in the past and it resulted in two very frustrating failures. I'm currently using an All Pond Solutions 1400EF for a 100 ltr tank tank I started, doing everything right this time...

The standard spray bar is 't quite long enough to span the full length of the tank, although that is what i was wanting to do at the start. I have it on the left hand side of the tank facing to the right and only very slightly pointing upwards to the surface to minimise gas exchange. Thats...

HELP !!!! Amano shrimp eating plants

Hey Ady i've increased the lighting intensity as i'm not sure i had enough to begin with. Ideally i want the absolute minimum light i can get away with. I did however reduce the photoperiod from 6 hours to 5.5 hours, do you think this was a wise decision? The co2 is also as high as i dare go...

HELP !!!! Amano shrimp eating plants

Quick update, I've Increased the lighting and started dosing early but in very small amounts, Co2 is at sitting at a nice lime green colour. Will increase the frequency of water changes a bit and see how things go, it may recover so fingers crossed and I'll post updates in my journal.

Fluval Studio 900. Sticks and Stones.

It's not you mate that is a very poor explanation, lol What I should have said is this "I'm seeking an alternative to Estimative Index when I scape the 200ltr tank as the position of the tank would make lots of water changes a nightmare" EI is what I'm doing for the Black Lava Rock scape. I...

Nice one Ady you've done it again. How do you and George always find such interesting pieces of wood, is it just a gamble or do you seek it out? I plan to give a wood scape a go in my 200 once I upgrade the lighting, but thats gonna wait till my current project matures.
