    leaves as a substrate cap

Don't expect them too either. I have used oak leaves a lot and they release hardly any tannins (if any at all). They do take ages to break down as well which I like. If you want a nice tint then alder cones work well. Indian almond leaves also do a great job.

How NOT To Add Compost To An Existing Tank!

You'll need to get the substrate out. Have you been syphoning it out?

How NOT To Add Compost To An Existing Tank!

It should settle but may take a while. Could be a risk but I would fill the tank up (simply to get more water volume) and then drain the tank with a hose and use the process to remove the substrate. Keep filling and draining and you will get it clear enough to see and remove the fish and do it...

Cat litter - success stories please?

Yeah! I'll give you the overall shot so it makes more sense. As you will see I like things to be in symmetry and order which makes trying to aquascape a nightmare. [emoji1] (Sorry if I have taken over your thread with my shots. [emoji4])

First days of aquascape with ADA Amazonia

Typically for the first week it would be a 50% water change daily. Dose the ferts as per EI guidelines.

Cat litter - success stories please?

Thanks! The tank on the right just has a Unipac black micro gravel substrate which I really like. I use cat litter in my CRS shrimp tank like Kirk does but it is only a thin base layer as it is not supporting any plants.

Cat litter - success stories please?

It is very light but seems to do the job well. I have used it on a number of tanks. I think it was Stu that said given its high CEC it can actually suck nutrients out of the water initially but I will leave that to one of the scientists to confirm. I have used it on its own and as a cap over...

    Substrate For Reparium Planter?

£8 for Hydroton or cat litter? If hydroton, where from? I was considering tying plants to hardscape but with my current idea I do not think there would any where I want to plants to go.

    Substrate For Reparium Planter?

Hi All, I have a new project underway and it will involve a few planters with emersed growth. My question is - does it matter what substrate is used in the planter? I can see lots of people use hydroton capped with gravel/cat litter. Rather than pay out for hydroton could I just use cat...

    Substrates that don't leach Ammonia

Just bear in mind that a lot of your bacteria are in the substrate so replacing it entirely may put you through a mini cycle as the bacterial levels build up again.

    Eco-Complete or ADA Soil

Please may I ask that you kindly take the time to read my post. I actually asked you a few questions in the seemingly pointless endeavour of trying to offer assistance. It seems you need a scientist. I am pretty sure Clive is a scientist. He answered your post and your response was "please...

    Eco-Complete or ADA Soil

Why not? Are you telling me that there is nowhere in the whole of Bulgaria that this can be done? What do you think is wrong with the substrate? What does it need to be tested for? How are any mere mortals expected to help when you have this superior 30 years experience? I can understand you...

    Cat litter scent

I should perhaps clarify my post. I should have said I can never get rid of the smell initially through rinsing. It does go after a couple of weeks.

    Cat litter scent

I've used cat litter in a few tanks. I can never get rid of the smell. I do add carbon to begin with as a precaution. Not sure if it is needed or not. I have not had any problems with it.
